Confirm you’re troubleshooting Motion assist
Google calls the motion-sickness feature Motion assist. It shows small bubbles at the edges of the screen and uses the phone’s motion sensors to move them in response to a vehicle’s movement. Google documents it as a feature to help reduce motion sickness while a passenger uses an Android device in a moving vehicle. See Google’s Motion assist instructions.
Motion assist is not Motion Sense, the separate Pixel 4 feature for gestures and proximity. Google describes Motion Sense on its Pixel hands-free controls page.
If Motion assist doesn’t activate
Check eligibility and automatic-start settings
- Check software requirements. Google says Motion assist requires Android 17 or higher and updated Google Play services. If either requirement is not met, update the phone and Play services before troubleshooting activation.
- Open Motion assist settings. Go to Settings > profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist, or search Settings for “Motion assist.” Labels can vary slightly by software version or locale.
- Enable automatic activation. Turn on Start in a moving vehicle if you want the feature to start when the phone detects a trip.
Keep a manual start option available
Google warns that a device may not always detect when it is in a moving vehicle. If auto-start misses a trip, that alone does not establish a phone fault. Add the Motion assist tile to Quick Settings using Add tile to Quick Settings in Motion assist settings, or open Quick Settings, tap Edit, and add the tile if it is listed. You can then turn Motion assist on manually.

Restart and update if it still seems unavailable
If the phone meets the requirements and the setting is enabled but Motion assist remains unavailable, restart the phone and install available system and app updates. These are general Pixel software troubleshooting steps, not Motion assist-specific diagnostics.
If the bubbles keep appearing
Stop future automatic starts
Open Motion assist settings and turn off Start in a moving vehicle. This prevents future automatic starts. If Motion assist has already started automatically, Google says a silent notification appears; tap it to turn off Motion assist for that session. Dismissing a session does not change the automatic-start setting.

Use the tile for occasional manual control
If you want to decide trip by trip, turn off automatic starts and use the Quick Settings tile when needed. Motion assist settings also let you adjust bubble opacity, color, shape, and randomization. These appearance options change how the bubbles look, not when the feature starts.

If the settings and software requirements look correct but the issue continues, Google’s general Pixel troubleshooting advice includes restarting, checking for app and system updates, and using Safe Mode to check whether a downloaded third-party app is causing a software problem. If it persists, contact Pixel support through the Pixel Help Center or the support option in Settings. Google’s Motion assist instructions do not prescribe a dedicated cache-clearing, sensor-reset, or repair procedure.
