Google says Gems will automatically become Gemini skills on a schedule that depends on your account type. You can also recreate a Gem manually by copying its name, description, and instructions, then moving any knowledge files into a skill folder. The main change is how custom instructions are reused: skills can be suggested automatically, invoked directly, and combined—but Google lists several Gem features that skills do not yet support.
What changes when a Gem becomes a skill?
A Gem is a customized Gemini experience built around instructions and, optionally, knowledge files. A skill is a reusable set of instructions that Gemini can recognize as relevant, that you can invoke directly, or that you can combine with other skills in a task. Google’s description of skills is in its Create & manage skills for Gemini Apps help page.
The change is therefore more than a name change, but it does not mean every Gem capability carries over. Google says it will transition Gems and supported files automatically when Gems go away. That promise is specifically about supported files; it does not guarantee that every file type, tool, or integration will be preserved.
When is Google’s automatic transition scheduled?
Google’s About the transition from Gems to skills page gives separate dates by account category. These are future transition dates as of October 2026, not a claim that every account already has access to create skills.

How to migrate a Gem manually
If you want to recreate a Gem as a skill before its scheduled transition, Google’s documented workflow is a copy-and-upload process. It directs users to download knowledge files individually; you can then upload the collected files together with the skill folder.

- Copy the Gem’s core details. Open the Gem and save its name, description, and instructions. As a precaution, keep any important prompt examples or requirements in your own notes too; Google’s manual instructions explicitly identify those three fields.
- Download its knowledge files. If the Gem uses attached knowledge, download each file from the Gem individually. Google’s instructions do not describe a bulk download of the original files.
- Create the skill. In Gemini, create a skill and enter the copied name, description, and instructions.
- Prepare the folder. Make a lowercase folder name with words separated by hyphens, matching the skill name. Download the skill ZIP, extract
SKILL.md, and put that file and the downloaded knowledge files in the folder. - Upload the folder. Use Replace skill to upload the prepared folder. Google’s instructions say the folder name must match the skill name.
- Check the result against your real tasks. Review the skill and try the tasks you rely on, especially any that depended on a Gem tool or feature. Check Google’s current compatibility list before treating the migrated setup as equivalent.
For the original Gem’s instruction and knowledge-file behavior, see Google’s Tips for creating custom Gems page; for the transition-specific steps, use the transition guide.

- Guided learning
Google also says skills do not yet work with Canvas or Deep Research. If your workflow depends on one of these capabilities, do not assume that copying instructions and files will reproduce the old experience.
Can you import a skill made on another platform?
Google allows importing skills created elsewhere as SKILL.md files, but file import alone does not establish that every instruction, tool, or integration will execute the same way in Gemini. Google’s transition guidance says internet-dependent scripts are unsupported, references must be uploaded with the skill, and GitHub files are not supported in skills for now. Treat an imported file as something to review and test, not proof of cross-platform behavioral compatibility.

Who can use skills, and what are the limits?
Google’s skills help page says availability is rolling out gradually, beginning with personal Google Accounts. It lists these current requirements and availability details:
- A personal Google Account, age 18 or older, and Keep Activity turned on.
- Access through the Gemini mobile app, Mac app, or web app, according to the page at the time of writing.
- No Google AI subscription is required to use skills.
- Up to 100 active skills. You can make more, but after reaching the active-skill limit you must deactivate one to activate another.
- A 100 MB total upload limit for skill files.
Google lists supported text and document, code, data and configuration, web and build, PDF, and image formats. It identifies binary DOC, DOCX, and XLSX files as unsupported. Consult the current skills help page for the exact format list and current availability; these details can change.

The gradual feature rollout and the future Workspace transition dates are separate matters: a scheduled migration in 2027 does not by itself mean every Workspace user can create or use skills today.
Should you wait for automatic migration or do it yourself?
Waiting is the simplest route if your Gem works for you and you are comfortable with Google’s announced schedule. Manual recreation makes sense if you want to organize or test your instructions early, but it requires copying the Gem details and handling knowledge files yourself. In either case, decide based on the features your workflow actually uses: the listed unsupported capabilities may matter more than the change in terminology.
Can Google Takeout back up Gems?
Google’s Download your Gemini Apps data help page says a Google Takeout export can include Gems data. Treat that as a separate backup or export route: the cited help does not say that a Takeout archive can be imported to rebuild a skill.
