Then inspect and set up the actual phone: it should be erased and should not ask for the previous owner’s Apple Account. Finally, confirm its battery, repair, and carrier details, and pay only through a method whose protections cover this specific purchase.
1. Check the seller, listing, and return terms
Buy from a seller you can identify and contact. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends checking the seller’s contact information, terms of sale, and reviews or complaints. Ask questions in writing, save the answers, and keep a copy of the listing and any condition claims.
Before committing, read the return policy itself—not just a general “buyer protection” claim. Confirm the return window, which problems qualify, how to start a return, and who pays return shipping. If a seller describes the phone as certified or refurbished, ask what that certification covers and which parts of the device were inspected. Apple also advises buyers to understand the seller’s return process before buying: Apple’s used iPhone buying checklist.
For a remote purchase, you cannot examine the handset in person before paying. Prefer a listing with clear photos of the actual phone and a return process you understand; keep the listing and messages in case the delivered device differs from what was promised.

2. Check for Activation Lock before accepting the phone
Activation Lock is linked to the previous owner’s Apple Account. A phone that remains linked may not be usable by you. Apple’s advice is direct: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.”
- Ask the seller to erase the iPhone and remove it from their Apple Account. Apple explains the required checks in its guide to what to do before selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone.
- Turn on the phone and begin setup. It should reach the Hello screen without asking for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- If setup asks for that account, or the screen says “iPhone Locked to Owner,” do not complete the purchase. For an online purchase, Apple says to return the device.
A seller’s assurance that the lock can be removed later is not a substitute for completing this check before ownership is final.

3. Inspect the actual iPhone
Remove the case and examine the screen, sides, back, charging connector, and buttons for damage. Test charging and basic operation. Apple advises against buying a phone that will not charge. Check the cameras, speakers, and other functions you rely on while you still have a return option.
If you cannot handle the phone before paying, make sure the return terms cover a device that arrives damaged or does not match the listing. Save photos, the listing, and seller messages alongside your receipt.

4. Review battery health and repair history
Battery health
On the iPhone, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 16.1 or later, the menu may be labeled Battery Health & Charging. Review the reported maximum capacity and any service message, then decide whether the battery condition fits your needs and the seller’s description.
Parts and Service History
Open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. It is available on iOS 15.2 or later for supported models and repairs. Apple’s Parts and Service History guide explains the labels:

- Genuine: the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Unknown: the part may be non-genuine, may not be functioning as expected, or may not be verified and linked to the iPhone.
- Unverified: the logic board was previously replaced.
- Used: the part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
This screen is not a complete repair record for every iPhone: supported components vary by model, and if a part has been serviced more than once, only the most recent service appears. Treat the information as useful evidence, not proof that no other repair or damage exists.

Go to Settings > General > About and find Carrier Lock or the network-provider-lock information. “No SIM restrictions” indicates the iPhone is not locked to a network provider. If a provider is listed, ask your carrier whether the phone can be activated on your plan before paying.

6. Use a payment method with applicable protection
Check the marketplace’s current refund and buyer-protection rules for this item, seller type, and payment method. Coverage and claim deadlines vary; do not assume a protection label applies to every used phone. The FTC recommends safer methods such as credit cards or secure payment systems with applicable buyer protection. Its guidance is U.S.-focused, and rights and dispute processes vary by jurisdiction and provider.
Keep the transaction on the marketplace. The FTC warns: “Don’t buy from anyone who wants you to pay outside the marketplace’s payment system.” Be especially wary if a seller insists on a gift card, cryptocurrency, or wire transfer. Moving off-platform can remove protections that would otherwise apply.
Save the receipt, order confirmation, listing, and messages. If there is a problem, contact the seller and marketplace promptly, within the applicable return or claim window. If you paid by card, contact the card issuer about disputing the charge.
