You can hide or limit the documented AI controls in Chrome, Edge, and Brave, but the settings do different jobs: hiding an icon is not the same as restricting an assistant’s access or clearing its data. The official instructions do not provide one switch that disables every AI-related capability across all three browsers.
What “turn off AI” means in these browsers
Each browser offers separate controls for its assistant, its toolbar or address-bar entry points, and—in some cases—the information an assistant can use or data associated with it. Use the control that matches your goal rather than assuming that hiding a button shuts down the service.
| Browser | Assistant access or permissions | Toolbar or address-bar visibility | Assistant data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome | Gemini permissions are listed under Gemini in Chrome; review them individually. | Separate preferences control Gemini entry points and the AI Mode address-bar entry. | No data-clearing control is specified in the cited Chrome instructions. |
| Edge | Turn off the setting that lets Copilot read browsing context. | A separate setting controls the Copilot toolbar button. | No data-clearing control is specified in the cited Edge instructions. |
| Brave | Brave documents disabling Leo in browser settings. | The Ask Leo address-bar option can be disabled separately. | Brave documents Clear Leo data as a separate step to withdraw consent. |
Turn off or limit Gemini in Chrome
Hide Gemini entry points and review permissions
- Open Chrome Settings.
- Select AI innovations, then Gemini in Chrome.
- Use the preferences for showing Gemini at the top of the browser and in the Mac menu bar or Windows system tray to hide those entry points.
- Under Permissions, review and turn off any access you do not want Gemini to have: precise location, microphone, sharing the current tab by default, and allowing Gemini to browse for you.
The display preferences change where Gemini appears; the permissions determine specific kinds of access. Google’s instructions list these as separate controls, so hiding the icon alone does not establish that Gemini or other AI capabilities are disabled. See Google’s Gemini in Chrome settings help.
Hide AI Mode in the address bar
Right-click the Chrome address bar and clear Always show AI Mode. This hides the AI Mode and “Add tabs and more” entries. Google documents this as a visibility change, not as disabling the underlying AI Mode service. AI Mode in Chrome may not be available on every device or to every user, so the option may be absent. Details are in Google’s AI Mode in Chrome instructions.

If Chrome is managed by work or school
An organization can use Chrome policies to manage generative AI and Gemini integrations. If a setting is unavailable or locked on a managed browser, check with your administrator; see Chrome Enterprise and Education policy guidance.
Limit Copilot in Microsoft Edge
Stop Copilot from using browsing context
- Open the More menu (…) in Edge’s toolbar.
- Select Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, and browser history in its responses. It controls browsing context, not whether the Copilot button is visible. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge help.

Hide the Copilot toolbar button
- Go to
edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebar. - Under App specific settings, select Copilot.
- Turn off Show Copilot button on the toolbar.
This changes the button’s visibility; it is separate from the browsing-context setting. An administrator may disable the sidebar or block Copilot by policy, in which case these local options may not be available. See Microsoft’s Edge Copilot and sidebar troubleshooting guidance.
Disable Brave Leo and clear its data
Disable Leo
Brave says Leo can be disabled in browser settings. The cited help page does not specify a settings path, so labels or placement may vary by browser version. Follow Brave’s instructions for disabling Leo.

Hide Ask Leo in the address bar
To remove the address-bar entry, go to Settings > Appearance > Leo AI Assistant and disable the Ask Leo option. Availability and presentation can depend on the Brave version; see Brave’s Leo usage instructions.
Clear Leo data
Clearing Leo data is distinct from hiding its entry point or disabling the assistant. Brave identifies Clear Leo data as the step to withdraw consent. Use the relevant option in the Leo settings described in Brave’s disable-Leo help.

Choose the control that matches your goal
- You only want fewer buttons: use the relevant visibility preference—Chrome’s Gemini or AI Mode display option, Edge’s toolbar toggle, or Brave’s Ask Leo option.
- You want to limit what an assistant can use: review Chrome’s Gemini permissions or turn off Edge’s browsing-context access setting.
- You want to withdraw consent or remove assistant data: Brave documents a separate Clear Leo data action. The cited Chrome and Edge instructions do not specify equivalent data-clearing controls.
- You cannot change a setting: check whether the browser is managed by an organization; policies can control availability.
Browser menus and AI features can change over time. If a documented label is missing, check the browser version and whether the device is managed before assuming the feature has been removed.
