Set up the phone around the reason your child needs it: create a supervised child account, keep social apps off the initial app list, restrict downloads and web access where the phone allows, and agree on rules before handing it over. No parental control can guarantee a child will never encounter social content, so combine settings with regular, low-pressure conversations.
Decide what the phone is for before setting it up
Start with the practical need: contacting caregivers, coordinating travel, school needs, or another agreed purpose. A phone is easier to configure when the family has settled what it is—and is not—for.
Write a short family phone agreement together. Cover when and where the phone can be used, bedtime and homework routines, who approves downloads, what personal or location information should stay private, and how your child can get help after an upsetting message or contact. Agree on what happens if a rule is broken and when you will revisit the plan. The AAP Family Media Plan and Common Sense Media’s phone agreement offer starting points.
Household rules are choices, not universal clinical requirements. A simple starting arrangement might be no phone at meals or during homework, a regular overnight charging spot outside bedrooms, and notifications limited to useful contacts. The AAP also suggests screen-free places and times, turning off autoplay and notifications, choosing appropriate content, and revisiting the family plan as children mature.

Use a child account and the controls for your phone
Do not share an adult account with your child. A child’s own account supports age-appropriate supervision and keeps the family member’s activity and purchases distinct. Setup paths and available controls vary by software version, age, device, and region, so confirm the current platform instructions while configuring the phone.

Choose the setup that matches the child’s actual phone and the family’s existing devices. Do not assume that controls available on one manufacturer’s Android phone will appear identically on another.
Configure access before installing everyday apps
On iPhone: review Screen Time and Family Sharing
Before adding apps, use Screen Time to review app and website access, content restrictions, communication contacts, allowed times, and category or individual app time allowances. Set these in a parent-managed family setup where supported, and check how each setting works on the child’s current iOS version.

Review Communication Safety as well. Apple describes it as an on-device feature that offers guidance around detected sensitive images. It is one safeguard, not a guarantee that a child will be protected from every harmful image or interaction.

On Android: review Family Link for the specific device
In Family Link, review the app supervision and time-limit options available for the child account and phone. Check current Google guidance for the device and country: Family Link’s controls do not cover every activity on the web, and available options can differ across devices.
Keep the initial app and permission list small
Install only what the child needs at first. Leave social media apps off the phone and enable download approval or other new-install restrictions where available. Review browser and website access as well as app access; a service may be reachable through a website even when its app is absent.

Also check notifications, location sharing, camera and microphone permissions, and in-app purchases in the context of the phone and the child’s needs. The AAP recommends reviewing controls for time, downloads, contacts, and purchases. A protective case is optional; if you choose one, match it to the exact phone model.

Make the rule concrete rather than relying on the phrase alone: no social media accounts or apps for now; ask before installing communication, video, or community apps; and tell a trusted adult if anyone asks for private information, photos, location, or a move to another app.
The AAP notes that most platforms set 13 as a minimum signup age and advises caution for children younger than 13. That describes common platform policies; it is not a universal legal age or proof that every service follows the same rule. Check the current terms for any service your child asks about.

App blocks and download approval reduce access but are not foolproof. A website, another device, or someone else’s account may still expose a child to social content. Keep the door open for questions without making the child feel they will automatically be punished for reporting something uncomfortable.
Revisit the setup as your child gains experience
Schedule brief check-ins about what is useful, what feels uncomfortable, which apps or features your child wants, and whether the agreement still fits. Set up controls with your child and explain why they are there. Expand privileges gradually when the child follows agreements and shows sound judgment; revise settings if circumstances change. The AAP describes first-phone use as an ongoing learning process, not a one-time handoff.
Consider a simpler device if contact is the only need
If the main goal is calling or basic contact, a basic phone or smartwatch may be enough and can offer less internet access than a smartphone. It is an alternative to consider, not a requirement; choose according to the family’s actual communication needs.
