Choose a child’s first phone by the communication need and the access your family is ready to manage—not by age alone. A phone can help with pickup plans and staying in touch, but a smartphone also brings apps, the open web, social interaction and distraction. You can give a child a phone without allowing social media, and you can start with a simpler device if calls and texts are all they need.

Is my child ready for a smartphone?

There is no universally right age. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says, “Overall, research doesn’t point to one perfect age when kids are ready for a smart phone.” In its March 28, 2024 guidance, the AAP also describes readiness as individual: responsibility and support from parents matter. The practical question is whether this child needs the device and can follow the boundaries that come with it.

Start by identifying the need. Is the phone for coordinating pickups, contacting caregivers while traveling, using maps, or keeping in touch with friends? Or is the request mainly for access to apps and the internet? The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises families to consider internet access, app downloads, and who can contact or be contacted by a child when deciding what kind of phone and controls to use.

Look for responsibility in everyday situations

Consider how your child handles belongings, household and school rules, responsibilities, and disagreements. Do they follow boundaries on shared devices? Do they use texts, photos, and videos thoughtfully? Can they pause before responding when upset, and ask an adult for help when something feels wrong? These are useful signs because a phone’s settings cannot make those decisions for them.

Check caregiver readiness, too

A first phone takes adult time: to agree on rules, set up accounts and controls, model the habits you expect, and keep talking about the child’s digital life. The AAP suggests considering whether you have a regular way to check in. If no caregiver can take on that ongoing role, a simpler device or delayed handoff may fit better for now.

For context, the AAP’s “Getting Your First Phone” response reports Pew Research Center’s October 2025 finding that three out of four parents of children under 13 said their child did not have their own smartphone; over 40% of parents of 11- and 12-year-olds said the same. This describes parent-reported ownership, not an age recommendation or a readiness test. AAP, “Getting Your First Phone”.

Should I start with a flip phone?

Choose the least complicated device that meets the real need. If your child needs to call or text caregivers but is not ready for app stores and broad internet access, a carrier flip phone or a restricted starter smartphone may be a better fit. Some limited-access devices may cost more, so compare the total cost rather than assuming simpler means cheaper.

If a smartphone is appropriate, separate having the phone from permission to use every feature. A child can have calling and messaging while social media, app downloads, web access, purchases, or location sharing remain restricted or unavailable. The AAP explicitly notes that phone ownership does not automatically mean social-media access.

Use these criteria to compare options; they are a practical family checklist, not a standardized scoring system:

  • Communication: Does the child need calls, texts, maps, or contact with a particular group?
  • Access: Can the device limit apps and open-web browsing to the level you are comfortable with?
  • Controls: Can caregivers manage accounts, approvals, content, contacts, purchases, and schedules?
  • Fit: Does it work with your family’s devices and the carrier coverage available where the child will use it?
  • Cost and durability: Is the device and required service affordable, including the possibility of loss or damage?
  • Boundaries: Can the child currently follow the limits this option would require?

The sources reviewed do not establish a best model, brand, current price, or plan. Compare entry-level or refurbished smartphones only as categories, and verify local carrier coverage, current device availability, and service costs before buying. A protective case is an optional way to reduce damage risk, not a requirement.

What parental controls should I set up?

Use controls to implement the family’s plan, not as a substitute for teaching, supervision, or conversation. Before handing over the phone, discuss settings together and explain why they are there. A short written agreement can make expectations clear and give the family a basis for adjusting access as the child demonstrates responsibility.

  • Contacts and communication: Decide who may contact the child, which contacts or group chats are allowed, and how new contacts are approved.
  • Apps and social media: Specify permitted apps, whether downloads need caregiver approval, and whether any social-media accounts are allowed.
  • Web and privacy: Set appropriate content limits; talk about personal information, photo and video consent, and when location sharing is appropriate.
  • Time and place: Agree whether the phone is put away during school, homework, meals, driving, and overnight.
  • Spending: Decide how app purchases and in-app spending are handled, including whether approval is required.
  • Problems and mistakes: Make a plan for what the child should do after seeing disturbing content, receiving an upsetting message, or making a mistake online.
  • Review: Set a time to check in and discuss what is working, what needs to change, and how the child can earn more freedom.

Apple documents child accounts and settings for age-based safeguards, app and website restrictions, schedules, contact approval, and communication safety. Its guide ties the described capabilities to operating-system version 27 or later on all family devices, so check compatibility before relying on a particular feature. The FTC says Apple and Android both offer tools for managing controls and permissions remotely, but detailed platform-by-platform feature comparisons depend on current device and software support. The AAP recommends revisiting the conversation every few weeks if phone use is affecting sleep or contributing to conflict. You can also adjust limits when a child’s needs or behavior changes; controls are tools for putting boundaries into practice, not proof that every risk has been removed.

What if my child is not ready yet?

Keep the conversation open and solve the underlying communication problem without granting more access than needed. Depending on the situation, consider a call-and-text device, a limited starter phone, a watch with communication functions, or a shared device for planned calls. The AAP also suggests flip phones; HealthyChildren notes that tablets can support video chat and texting. Revisit the decision as circumstances and the child’s demonstrated responsibility change.
