If a Chromebook app stopped working after an OS transition, first identify what kind of app it is—Android, Chrome, or Linux—and what is actually failing: discovery, installation, startup, or a feature. Then check ChromeOS updates, the Chromebook model, and whether work or school management applies. The right fix depends on those details; an update issue, an app’s device restrictions, a phased-out Chrome app, and an unsupported Linux capability are different problems.

Identify the app type and the failure

Before changing settings, note the app’s name, Chromebook model, ChromeOS version, and exact symptom. An app that is missing from the Play Store needs a different diagnosis from one that installs but crashes, or a Linux program that opens but cannot use a device feature.

  • Android app: Installed or discovered through Google Play.
  • Chrome app: A legacy app built for Chrome’s app platform; Google is phasing out support.
  • Linux app: Installed in the Chromebook’s Linux development environment.

Also check whether the Chromebook is managed by a school or employer. Administrators can control app availability and Linux setup.

Check ChromeOS and the device’s update status

Open Settings > About ChromeOS to view the installed version and check for updates. ChromeOS downloads updates automatically when the Chromebook is connected, but a restart is needed to finish installing one. If an update will not download, try Wi-Fi or Ethernet and check again.

Update availability depends on the Chromebook model and, on managed devices, administrative policy. Google says models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates, but the exact update schedule is device-specific; check Google’s guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook rather than assuming every model follows the same schedule. An OS transition does not by itself establish that you can roll back to an earlier version.

If Google Play will not load or download apps

A Play Store loading or download failure is not the same as an app compatibility message. For basic store trouble, start with checks that do not change your files or settings:

  1. Restart the Chromebook.
  2. Check that the internet connection works; try another network if available.
  3. Install any available ChromeOS update and restart to complete it.

Google’s troubleshooting guidance for Play Store downloads on Chromebooks covers store and download problems. If the store works but a particular app is unavailable or reports incompatibility, investigate model and app support instead.

If an Android app is missing or says the device is incompatible

Android app support is conditional. Google Play is available only on some Chromebook models, and Google notes that not all Android apps work on Chromebooks. A developer may restrict an app to certain device types, or the Chromebook may lack a feature the app requires, such as GPS. Google’s help also uses messages such as “Your device is not compatible with this version” and “I can’t find an app on the Play Store.”

  • If several Play Store functions fail, return to the network, restart, and ChromeOS update checks.

For app-specific compatibility, contact the app developer; changing ChromeOS will not add a missing hardware feature or override a developer’s device restriction. See Google’s instructions for installing and using Android apps on a Chromebook.

If a Chrome app disappeared or stopped working

Chrome apps are on a staged end-of-support path. Google’s Chrome apps end-of-support guidance says the transition began in July 2025 and gives different scheduled milestones for user-installed apps and managed kiosk use. These are scheduled dates, not a guarantee that every app will stop on the same day; consult the current guidance for the applicable use case.

If the Chromebook belongs to a school or employer, ask the administrator whether policy affects the app’s availability, especially for managed kiosk use. For an app that is no longer supported, the practical next step is to ask its developer about a supported web-based alternative. Google recommends developers move to modern web technologies.

If a Linux app fails or lacks a feature

Linux apps run in a separate development environment, with capability limits that can differ from Android or Chrome apps. Restart the Chromebook, open Terminal, and update the Linux packages with:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then test the app again. Google’s Linux setup guidance lists cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration among capabilities not supported in the Linux environment described there. If the app depends on one of these, a package update may not resolve the limitation. Work or school administrators may also block Linux setup.

Escalate only after lower-risk checks

For apps that crash, Google recommends a sequence of progressively more disruptive steps. Test the app after each change so you can tell what helped.

  1. Restart the Chromebook.
  2. Close unneeded apps and browser tabs, then retry.
  3. Remove recently installed apps or extensions that may be related to the problem.
  4. Consider a reset or recovery only after the earlier checks fail. Back up important local files first if possible.

Recovery permanently erases local downloaded files. If the Chromebook is managed, contact the administrator before changing system settings. For persistent hardware or system problems, Google directs users to the Chromebook manufacturer. More details are in Google’s Chromebook troubleshooting guide and its hardware and system problem guidance.
