Choose a business router by checking the documented security-support lifecycle for the exact model, hardware revision, and region—not by assuming that a long feature list or a “business” label guarantees years of updates. Before buying, find out when security maintenance ends, how firmware is obtained, whether access depends on a license or support contract, and what you will do when support expires.
What a strong router update policy should tell you
A useful policy makes it possible to answer four questions for the router you are actually considering:

- What is covered? Does the commitment explicitly include security fixes, or does it refer only to general product support or firmware maintenance?
- When does coverage end? Look for a date or a clearly defined way to determine one. Do not treat a product’s sale date, last firmware release, and end of support as interchangeable.
- How do you get updates? Check whether firmware is delivered automatically or installed manually, and whether registration, a subscription, a license, or a support agreement is required.
- Which product does the policy cover? Confirm the precise model, hardware revision, and sales region. A policy for one version or market may not apply to another.
Ask the vendor or reseller for written clarification if its public policy does not establish whether security fixes are included or when they stop. A general support statement is not, by itself, proof of a security-update commitment.
Compare lifecycle dates by what they mean
Vendors use different lifecycle terms, so compare their definitions and the dates for the specific product rather than comparing labels alone.

| Vendor policy example | What the stated milestones mean | What a buyer should verify |
|---|---|---|
| TP-Link | TP-Link defines End of Maintenance (EOM) as the date it stops providing support or maintenance for a product. Its policy says EOM is usually three years after End of Sales (EOS), subject to exceptions. | Check the applicable regional listing and whether the entry applies to the model or a particular version. Confirm what support and security maintenance remain before the listed EOM date. |
| Cisco Meraki | Meraki distinguishes End of Sale (EOS), End of Support (EOST), end of firmware maintenance, and firmware-version restrictions. Its policy says support for discontinued hardware is typically five years after EOS. | Read the milestones separately: a support end date and a firmware-maintenance date are not necessarily the same. Confirm the product’s dates and any firmware-version limits. |
These are vendor-specific policy descriptions, not a shared industry standard or a guarantee that every device receives security fixes for the same period. TP-Link’s End-of-Life Policy, updated November 27, 2024, says: “The End of Maintenance (EOM) date is when TP-Link will no longer provide support or maintenance for a product.” Treat that definition as TP-Link’s policy, not a universal definition for other manufacturers.
Check the exact model, revision, and region
- Identify the full model and hardware revision. Check the product label and the vendor’s documentation; a product family name alone may not identify the supported version.
- Open the vendor’s lifecycle listing for your market. Confirm that the entry matches the exact model or version and the region where you plan to buy it. TP-Link says its EOL status can apply to a model or a specific version, and regional models can vary.
- Read the product-specific dates and terms. Find EOS, end of maintenance or firmware maintenance, and end-of-support dates where the vendor publishes them. If the policy does not say whether security fixes continue through a milestone, ask the vendor to clarify.
- Check again immediately before purchase. Lifecycle status and availability can change. Do not rely on an old product page or a reseller listing as evidence that updates are still provided.
For example, TP-Link’s ER7206 product page marks that model End of Life. Its listed VPN and firewall capabilities do not make it a suitable current purchase by themselves; check the current regional lifecycle listing before considering it.

Find out whether firmware access has conditions
“Updates available” does not necessarily mean every upgrade is available to every owner without conditions. Check how the manufacturer distributes firmware, whether you must register the router, and whether a license or support entitlement affects installation or upgrade eligibility.
Fortinet’s FortiGate firmware documentation describes downloads through FortiGuard and the Customer Service & Support site after registration. It also says that, in the circumstances described in that documentation, a valid Firmware & General Updates license is required to upgrade to the next minor or major version. This is a Fortinet-specific example; verify the current terms for each product you shortlist.

Before buying, ask the vendor or seller:
- Are security fixes included in the stated support period?
- Can this model still download security firmware, and is registration required?
- Does a license or support contract affect access to fixes or upgrades?
- What happens to firmware access after the product reaches its end-of-support milestone?
- How are security advisories and update notices delivered?
Assess security features separately from update support
VPN options, firewall controls, DoS protection, management tools, and WAN capabilities matter to operational fit. They do not show how long the manufacturer will maintain the product. Evaluate the feature set against your network needs only after establishing the update lifecycle.
For instance, TP-Link describes its Omada business VPN gateway category as supporting IPsec, WireGuard, OpenVPN, and SSL VPN, with integrated firewall policies and DoS protection on selected models. Those are category-level capability statements, not a commitment to a particular security-update period. Verify which features are present on the exact model and independently check its lifecycle status.

Make lifecycle planning part of the purchase
A router purchase should include a plan for tracking support changes and replacing the device before updates end. CISA’s communications-infrastructure guidance recommends monitoring vendor end-of-life announcements for hardware, operating-system versions, and software, and upgrading end-of-life equipment as soon as possible.
- Record the model, hardware revision, region, and lifecycle dates when the router is deployed.
- Assign someone to monitor vendor lifecycle announcements and security notices.
- Set a review point ahead of the stated end-of-support or maintenance date so there is time to choose, configure, and deploy a replacement.
- Keep a supported replacement option in the plan rather than assuming the current router can remain in service indefinitely.
Use a purchase checklist to compare shortlisted routers
Apply the same checks to every candidate. If a vendor does not publish a commitment or date, mark it as unconfirmed rather than inferring one from the product’s age or feature set.
Quick Recap
- Security-update commitment: Is a minimum or expected support duration published, and does it cover security fixes?
- Lifecycle clarity: Are the relevant milestones defined and findable for the exact product?
- Firmware access: Are updates automatic or manual, and are registration, licensing, subscription, or contract conditions disclosed?
- Product match: Do the lifecycle terms apply to the exact hardware revision and sales region?
- Operational fit: Do VPN, firewall, WAN, management, and deployment features meet the business’s needs?
- Replacement planning: Can the business monitor lifecycle changes and replace the device before support ends?
