Use RouterOS’s built-in updater when the router can reach MikroTik’s update servers: back up the configuration, choose the intended release channel, install the offered release, and let the router reboot. Then check /system package print or WinBox’s Packages view and review the log. MikroTik also strongly recommends upgrading RouterBOOT after a RouterOS update.
Before you update
Record the router’s current state
Note the current RouterOS version, device model, architecture, and selected update channel. Find the architecture in System → Resources. These details help you confirm that you choose the right packages if you need a manual update. MikroTik’s upgrade and installation documentation describes the updater and package-selection process.
Back up configuration and protect the backup
Save a configuration backup before changing RouterOS, and store it securely: MikroTik notes that binary backups contain sensitive device information. The vendor recommends restoring a backup on the same RouterOS version on which it was created. A system backup does not include some Dude and User Manager configuration, so preserve those separately if you use either service. See MikroTik’s backup documentation.
Plan major upgrades and production rollouts
For a move from RouterOS v6 to v7, first upgrade v6 to a current stable or long-term release. MikroTik says most otherwise functional configurations convert automatically, but advises against running v7 on hardware with less than 64 MB of RAM and calls for particular care with MPLS configurations. This is a vendor compatibility recommendation, not a measured failure rate. Read the v7 migration guidance, updated February 25, 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
For a production network or a complex configuration, try the update on a locally tested device first, check the services you rely on, and roll it out in groups rather than changing every router at once. MikroTik gives incremental rollout guidance in its TR-069 documentation.
Choose a release channel
In WinBox or WebFig, go to System → Packages → Check For Updates. Choose a channel deliberately; the versions offered can differ by channel.

- Wired Gigabit Router – 5x Gigabit Ethernet ports, 2.5G SFP, PoE-Out, USB, powered by RouterOS
| Channel | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Long-term | Less frequent changes, with critical fixes. |
| Stable | Tested features and fixes, with a faster cadence than long-term. |
| Testing | Receives only basic internal testing; MikroTik does not recommend it for production. |
| Development | Exposes raw changes for evaluation and testing. |
These distinctions are MikroTik’s descriptions in its release-channel guidance. Review the offered version and its changelog before installing, especially on a router that supports important services.
Update with the built-in updater
WinBox or WebFig
- Open System → Packages and select Check For Updates.
- Set the intended release channel, check for updates, and review the offered version and changelog.
- Choose Download and install if you want to download first and reboot manually, or Download&Install to reboot automatically after a successful download.
- Allow the router to reboot. Do not interrupt power while the update is being installed.
The update feature connects to MikroTik’s download servers from the router itself, not from the computer running WinBox or WebFig. The router therefore needs network access to those servers. The updater also accounts for custom installed packages, making it the usual choice when available. See MikroTik’s update procedure.

Command line
A CLI workflow uses /system package update to inspect or set the channel, then check-for-updates to check for an offer. Review the result before running install. For scripts, follow MikroTik’s example of checking the update status before issuing installation; an unattended update is not automatically safe for every network or device.
Update manually when the router cannot use the updater
Manual installation gives you package-level control, but you are responsible for selecting the correct architecture and packages. The built-in updater is generally simpler if the router can reach MikroTik’s servers.

- In System → Resources, identify the router’s architecture.
- On MikroTik’s Software download page, download the RouterOS main package for that architecture and any extra packages currently installed on the router.
- Transfer the package files to the router using WinBox, WebFig, or FTP.
- Reboot the router to install the uploaded packages.
- After reboot, verify the package version and inspect the log for success or errors.
MikroTik documents install ignore-missing for cases where you intend to install only the main package and omit packages that were not uploaded. It is not the default for a complete upgrade: include the extra packages the router needs. The official upgrade documentation describes HTTPS as the suggested updater mode and recommends certificate checking.
Verify the installed version and check for problems
Check packages in the CLI
Run /system package print to see package versions and state. You can also run /system resource print; its output includes the RouterOS version. MikroTik explains package listings and installation checks in its package documentation and RouterOS documentation.

Check in WinBox and review the log
After a manual upgrade and reboot, the new version appears in the WinBox window title and the Packages menu. Also inspect /log print in the CLI or open the Log view. Installation messages can confirm success or identify a conflict or unmet requirement; the package documentation recommends checking the log after reboot.
If the expected version is not offered or installed
- Confirm that the intended release channel is selected; channel availability can vary.
- Check that the router—not only your computer—can reach MikroTik’s update service.
- If the updater does not detect a version, check DNS resolution for
upgrade.mikrotik.com. MikroTik’s troubleshooting guidance, updated November 7, 2024, recommends this check. Avoid treating an IP address shown in an older example as a universal current endpoint. - Read the installation messages in the log and use the reported conflict or requirement to decide what to fix before retrying.
/system/check-installation is a separate integrity diagnostic for file readability and placement and NAND/flash health. It is not the routine way to check which RouterOS version is installed.
Upgrade RouterBOOT after RouterOS
RouterOS and RouterBOOT are distinct. After updating RouterOS, check RouterBOARD status and follow MikroTik’s recommendation to upgrade RouterBOOT, then reboot as directed. MikroTik states: “It is strongly recommended to upgrade the bootloader after RouterOS update.” Follow the vendor’s upgrade instructions for the device rather than assuming the RouterOS package update also updated the bootloader.
