In a 2026 preclinical study, it improved measures of heart function by up to 80% in animal models of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). That figure is not a result in people, and the study does not show that eating pomegranates or taking urolithin A treats heart failure.
What the 80% figure means
King’s College London reported that measures of heart function in animal models improved by up to 80% compared with models that did not receive urolithin A. The figure applies to experimental models and particular measures; it does not mean that overall heart function improved by 80% in patients, or that people with heart failure would see a similar benefit. The report also describes reduced fibrosis and enlargement of heart muscle cells in the models. (King’s College London, 2026)
What the researchers studied
Jie Su and colleagues’ study, “Targeting PKGIα Cys42 attenuates cardiac dysfunction in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” appeared online on August 19, 2026, in Science Advances. It examined urolithin A in experimental models of HFpEF and in engineered human heart tissue. In the models, the compound improved diastolic function—the heart’s ability to relax and fill—and reduced adverse cardiac remodeling. The engineered tissue showed improved relaxation and contraction kinetics. (PubMed study record)
Why HFpEF matters
In HFpEF, the heart’s pumping ability can be preserved, but the heart muscle is stiff and does not fill as effectively. The study focuses on this form of heart failure, not every type of heart disease. King’s College London describes HFpEF as affecting nearly half a million people in the UK and accounting for roughly half of UK heart-failure cases; those are estimates cited by the institution, not figures independently verified here. How urolithin A may work
The researchers report that urolithin A directly modifies cysteine 42 (Cys42) of cGMP-dependent protein kinase Iα (PKGIα), activating a pathway associated with improved relaxation and less harmful remodeling in their HFpEF model. This points to a possible therapeutic target, but the mechanism and benefits described are preclinical findings, not proof of a treatment that works in patients. (PubMed study record)

King’s College London notes that urolithin A has been evaluated in human studies with a favorable safety profile. That does not establish its safety or effectiveness as a treatment for HFpEF. The institution says trials involving people are needed to determine whether the approach benefits patients. Professor James Leiper, Director of Research at the British Heart Foundation, said: “While these findings are promising, the benefits have so far been seen in animals and engineered human tissue, so clinical trials involving people are needed to test if this approach is effective for patients.” (King’s College London, 2026)

Can pomegranates or urolithin A supplements help heart failure?
This study does not show that pomegranate fruit or juice treats HFpEF: it tested urolithin A, not pomegranates as a food intervention. Urolithin A is associated with compounds produced when gut microbes process certain foods, including pomegranates, but that relationship does not establish that eating those foods produces a therapeutic effect. Nor does the study establish a benefit from urolithin A supplements. Do not use either as a substitute for medical care or prescribed heart-failure treatment. Dr Joseph Burgoyne, the study’s senior author at King’s College London, cautioned: “While there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that people should eat pomegranates to treat heart failure, these findings raise the possibility that dietary approaches that enhance urolithin A production may help alleviate this condition.” (King’s College London, 2026)

Clinical trials are needed to test whether urolithin A’s effects translate to people with HFpEF. Until that evidence exists, the study is best understood as a promising early-stage finding about a biological pathway—not a dietary recommendation or a proven heart-failure therapy.
