Generally, yes—with sensible precautions. SquirrelDisk’s developer says the app scans disk usage locally, protects important locations from being collected for cleanup, and offers several deletion choices. Those are the developer’s claims, not the result of an independent security audit. Scanning a disk is different from deleting files: review what you select, use Trash or Recycle Bin when available, and back up anything you are unsure about before removing it.

What does “safe” mean when using SquirrelDisk?

There are several separate questions behind “Is SquirrelDisk safe?”: whether scanning exposes your files, whether you can accidentally select something important, whether deleted data can be recovered, and whether an operating-system warning signals a problem. SquirrelDisk’s official materials describe a local disk-usage analyzer and cleanup tool for macOS, Windows, and Linux. They say the app is free and open source under AGPL-3.0; the press kit identifies Adileo Barone as its developer and gives 2022 as its first-release year. The product page describes its size as approximately 8 MB, a product specification rather than an independent performance measurement. The press kit lists version 2.5.0 dated 30 September 2026 and 25 supported languages (SquirrelDisk press kit).

The app visualizes disk usage as a sunburst chart or treemap, making large folders easier to spot. Scanning shows what is taking space; it does not itself mean files have been deleted. Deletion happens only after a user collects items and chooses a cleanup method, according to the official product page.

Is SquirrelDisk safe for privacy?

SquirrelDisk says scanned files and filenames are not uploaded, no account is required, and the app does not track users. These are statements from the developer, not independently verified privacy findings. The project publishes its source code and releases on GitHub under AGPL-3.0, which allows technically capable readers to inspect the implementation. Public source availability does not by itself verify that a particular downloaded build is safe or establish that an independent audit has taken place.

What changes when scanning over SSH?

The SSH guide says the app connects to the server the user selects. Filenames and file sizes travel over that SSH connection to the local computer and remain there, according to the guide. Scan access is limited by the SSH account’s permissions; it cannot show files that account cannot read. The guide says a helper is placed under ~/.cache/squirreldisk when possible, with standard commands used as a fallback.

Can I delete something important by mistake?

It is possible to make a consequential selection, so treat the chart as a way to investigate disk usage—not as a recommendation to remove every large item. SquirrelDisk says it protects system folders, the home folder, whole drives, and other essential locations from being collected for cleanup. App and settings folders require an extra confirmation, according to the product FAQ. These protections reduce some risks but do not replace checking the selected path and understanding what a file or folder does.

Choose the least irreversible cleanup method

Choice What it means When to use it
Move to Trash or Recycle Bin Retains the operating system’s usual recovery step until the bin is emptied. Prefer this when it is available and you are not completely certain.
Back up, then delete Keeps a separate copy before removing the selected item. Use this for files you may need again or cannot readily replace. The product materials describe copying to an external drive or cloud storage.
Delete permanently Removes the Trash or Recycle Bin recovery step. Use only when you have identified the item and can replace it or no longer need it.
Secure erase Attempts to overwrite and remove the selected file; limitations vary by storage and filesystem. Do not treat it as a universal guarantee that data cannot be recovered.

If the file matters, make a backup before starting cleanup. An external drive is one optional place to keep a copy.

What does secure erase do?

SquirrelDisk describes its optional secure erase as overwriting a file three times—first with zeros, then ones, then random data—renaming it, and removing it (official product page). That procedure is not a universal guarantee of erasure. The product’s Linux guide warns that SSDs and Btrfs may retain old blocks and says LUKS full-disk encryption is the protection for data there. Its Windows guide likewise notes SSD behavior and identifies BitLocker as the stronger protection. Secure erase should not be treated as a substitute for full-disk encryption or as assurance for every storage implementation.

Is deleting files over SSH safe?

Remote deletion deserves more caution than local cleanup. SquirrelDisk’s SSH guide says deletion on the server uses rm and there is no remote Trash or undo. Before confirming, check the selected path and SSH account carefully, and back up files you might need. The SSH user’s permissions determine what can be scanned; remote access does not make deletion reversible.

Windows says “Windows protected your PC.” Is that safe?

The Windows guide says this warning may appear because SquirrelDisk is not code-signed (SquirrelDisk Windows guide). An unsigned-app warning is not, by itself, proof that an app is safe or malware. The project’s publicly available source code gives technically capable users something to inspect, but it is not a security certification. If you cannot verify that you obtained the app from the project’s official distribution, do not bypass the warning just to proceed.

Windows files and OneDrive details to know

  • Do not manually delete hiberfil.sys or pagefile.sys; Windows manages these files.
  • The guide says OneDrive online-only files count as zero because they do not occupy local disk space. A scan therefore does not show their cloud-stored contents as local disk usage.

What should macOS and Linux users watch for?

macOS

SquirrelDisk is distributed outside the App Store. macOS may therefore ask you to approve opening it in Privacy & Security, according to the macOS guide. That distribution prompt is not proof of either safety or malware. The guide also includes backup and deletion guidance; use a backup when you are uncertain about a selected file.

Linux

The Linux guide lists x86_64 AppImage and .tar.gz packages and says there is no ARM build. A scan reports only what the current user can read, so protected directories may be incomplete. Do not remove files under /var/lib/docker by hand; the guide directs users to docker system prune instead. For secure erase, the guide’s SSD and Btrfs caveat applies.

How strong is the evidence that SquirrelDisk is safe?

The published materials reviewed here are official SquirrelDisk product and platform guides. They document the developer’s stated privacy approach, cleanup controls, platform-specific cautions, and limitations. They do not establish an independent security audit or vulnerability assessment. That distinction matters: the documentation can explain how the product is intended to behave, but it cannot independently certify a particular download or settle every security question.
