To play an Xbox player with someone on PlayStation, first confirm that the specific game supports cross-play between those consoles. Then allow cross-network play on Xbox, review invitation privacy on PS5, and use the game’s own friend, invite, or cross-play controls. There is no universal console switch that makes every game cross-play.
Before changing settings: confirm the game supports cross-play
Cross-play is a feature the game itself must support. Console permissions can allow or restrict access, but they cannot add Xbox–PlayStation compatibility to a title that does not offer it. Check the game’s current official support page for platform compatibility, any in-game cross-play control, account-linking requirements, and how to find or invite friends. Those steps differ by game; there is no single account-linking or friend-search process for every title.
Also check that both players can access a compatible version of the game. Some titles use separate matchmaking pools or have other game-specific requirements, so a general console setting may not be the only factor.
Allow cross-network play on Xbox
- Open the Xbox privacy controls: go to Settings > General > Online safety & family > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy.
- Open the detailed controls: select View details & customize, then Communication & multiplayer.
- Allow cross-network play: set You can join cross-network play to allow. This is the console permission for playing with people outside Xbox services. See Microsoft’s Xbox privacy and privilege documentation.
Xbox lists You can join multiplayer games separately. If online multiplayer is blocked, review that permission too; enabling cross-network play alone does not override a separate multiplayer restriction. Voice and text permissions are separate as well, so change them only if communication is the problem.

On PC, Microsoft’s Xbox privacy controls use different wording for the comparable permission: You can play with people outside of Xbox services. The console path above applies to Xbox consoles.
Review cross-play invitation privacy on PlayStation
PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Privacy.
- Select View and Customise Your Privacy Settings.
- Under Communication and multiplayer, review Get crossplay game invitations and allow invitations if you want them to reach the account.
This setting concerns cross-play game invitations; it is not a universal switch that forces every game to support cross-play. PlayStation’s privacy settings guide also explains how to manage settings online through Account Management and notes that account privacy settings apply across devices.

PS4
Go to Settings > Account Management > Privacy Settings, then select the feature you want to change. PlayStation’s guide does not document a universal PS4 cross-play toggle, so check the individual game’s settings and support instructions for its cross-play and invitation options.
Use the game’s own cross-play and invite options
After reviewing console permissions, follow the game’s instructions to enable cross-play if needed, add your friend, and send or accept an invitation. The controls may differ between platforms even in the same game.

Example: Destiny 2
Bungie’s Destiny 2 Cross Play Guide illustrates the difference. PlayStation players can opt out through the game’s settings menu. On Xbox, Bungie’s guide directs players through Settings > General > Online Safety & Family > Privacy & Online Safety > Xbox Privacy > View Details and Customize > Communication and Multiplayer, where You can join cross-network play must be allowed. Bungie also identifies a separate Xbox communication setting, so cross-network access and communication are not the same control.
In Destiny 2, Cross Play lets players form fireteams across supported platforms; Cross Save is a separate feature for accessing characters across platform accounts. Enabling one does not mean you have enabled the other.

If cross-play still does not work
- Verify compatibility: check the game’s official support page for Xbox–PlayStation cross-play and any version or matchmaking-pool restrictions.
- Check Xbox permissions: allow You can join cross-network play and make sure You can join multiplayer games is not blocking online play.
- Check PlayStation privacy: on PS5, review Get crossplay game invitations; on PS4, use the game’s own guidance because the reviewed PlayStation guide does not list a universal cross-play setting.
- Review family controls: child-account permissions can block multiplayer or cross-network play. Microsoft’s documentation says titles must respect Xbox family-member privilege settings; in its documented test setup, the child defaults for joining multiplayer games and cross-network play are both Block. A parent or family organizer may need to change the relevant Xbox permission. On PlayStation, a family manager, parent, or guardian can manage a child’s privacy settings and choose which settings the child may change.
- Follow the title’s invite process: check whether it requires a publisher account, a specific friend-search method, or an in-game invitation. The process varies by game.
- Check the game’s online-play requirements: some games require PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer. PlayStation directs users to the individual game’s PlayStation Store listing for details; this does not mean PlayStation Plus is a universal requirement for cross-play itself.
If the issue is only voice chat, text, or invitations—not joining the game—look at those communication or invitation controls specifically. Cross-network permission does not automatically make every communication setting permissive.
