If Discord voice or video fails in Chrome, first check whether it happens in every call or only one server or channel. For a Chrome-wide problem, restore Discord’s microphone or camera permission, verify your computer and Discord device settings, then rejoin the call and restart Chrome. These checks can distinguish a permission or channel restriction from a muted, misselected, or disconnected device.
First, find out whether the problem is channel-specific
Try another Discord voice channel or server. If your microphone or camera works there, the issue may be that channel’s permissions rather than Chrome or your hardware.
- Can’t join voice? Ask a server administrator to check your role’s Connect permission.
- You can join, but nobody hears you? Ask the administrator to check Speak permission and whether you are server-muted.
- Your camera will not share video? Ask the administrator to check the channel’s Video permission.
A server mute or deafen may also need to be removed by an administrator or owner. If the problem follows you across Discord calls in Chrome, continue with the browser and device checks below. See Discord’s permissions guide for role and channel permission details.
Allow Discord to use your microphone or camera in Chrome
Chrome’s site permission is separate from your computer’s permission. A device may work in another app while Chrome is still blocking Discord. In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings, then choose Microphone or Camera.

- Find Discord in the blocked or “Not allowed” list.
- Change its permission to Allow, or remove the saved block so Chrome asks again.
- Return to Discord and join a voice channel. If Chrome prompts for access, choose Allow.
For microphone-specific steps, Discord also documents removing its entry from Chrome’s “Not allowed to use your microphone” list: Discord browser troubleshooting. Google documents an alternative route: open Discord, select the site-information control beside the address, choose Site settings, and change the relevant permission. Chrome saves permission changes automatically. See Google’s site-permission instructions.
If Chrome asks you to change a computer setting, enable microphone or camera access in the operating system and follow any prompt to quit or restart the browser. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may control these settings; ask them if the permission is locked. Google notes: “If you’re using Chrome at work or school, your network administrator can set camera and microphone settings.” See Google Chrome Help.

Check mute controls and the selected devices
Once Chrome is allowed to access the device, confirm that Discord and your computer are using the intended microphone, speakers or headphones, and camera.
For a microphone problem
- Check any physical mute switch on your headset or microphone.
- In Discord, open User Settings → Voice & Video. Confirm the intended input device is selected and that input volume is not turned down.
- Check Input Mode. If you expect your mic to transmit while you speak, make sure Push to Talk was not selected unintentionally.
- In your computer’s sound settings, confirm that the intended microphone is the default recording device and that its recording level is usable.
For a sound or camera problem
- In Discord’s User Settings → Voice & Video, select the intended output device and check its output level. Also make sure Discord is not deafened.
- For video, confirm Chrome and the operating system allow camera access and that the intended camera is selected.

Reconnect the device and restart the call
A loose connection or a stale call can prevent an otherwise available device from working. Check the physical connection before changing more settings.
- Make sure the headset, microphone, or webcam cable is fully seated. If it is USB-connected, try another available port.
- Leave the voice channel or call, then join again.
- If the problem remains, restart Chrome and rejoin Discord.
- If restarting Chrome does not help, restart the computer.
Update software if the problem persists
If permissions, device selection, connections, and restarts have not resolved the problem, check that your operating system and relevant audio, webcam, and graphics drivers or device software are current. This is a later troubleshooting step, particularly if only one device or browser environment is affected; it is not a reason to install an unverified system-cleaner or driver utility.

Discord’s troubleshooting guide also mentions disabling hardware acceleration for video in the Discord desktop client. That is a desktop-client setting, not an established Chrome web-client control, so it is not a Chrome fix. If the problem occurs only in a particular channel, the server administrator is the right person to check channel and role permissions. If a work or school policy locks Chrome’s permissions, contact your organization’s administrator.

For a problem that persists across Discord calls after the checks above, contact Discord support. Include the browser and version, where the issue occurs (browser, mobile, or desktop), screenshots of Discord’s Voice & Video settings, and the names of your input and output devices. Add your operating system and a brief description if the support form requests them. If the device also fails in other apps or on another computer, contact the device maker or seek hardware support; replacing equipment is not a fix for a Chrome or Discord permission block.
