If notifications arrive late on your Samsung Galaxy, compare the same repeatable alert while the phone is active and idle, then change one setting at a time. Delays that improve after removing the affected app from a background-sleep list point toward a phone-side restriction; delays confined to one app may instead involve its settings or service. Neither pattern proves the cause on its own.
Before testing, rule out settings that hide or limit alerts
Start with settings that can prevent notifications from appearing or restrict an app’s activity in the background. Samsung identifies Power saving mode and Do Not Disturb as possible reasons notifications may not display. It also warns that apps in Sleeping or Deep sleeping lists may not send notifications while closed. Samsung’s developer guidance explains that a deep-sleeping app is inactive in the background and cannot perform activities such as notifications or updates.
Samsung’s US guidance gives the path Settings > Device care (or Battery and device care) > Battery > Background usage limits. Labels and locations can differ by Galaxy model and software version; if that path is not present, look under Settings for Battery, Device care, or Background usage limits.
Also check Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications. Make sure Allow notifications is enabled and that the categories you expect are turned on. Review the app’s own notification settings as well. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking Data Saver and software updates.

Run a controlled notification test
- Choose a repeatable trigger. Use an alert you can cause several times, such as a message from another person or account. Record when the event is sent and when the notification appears. Avoid one-off alerts if you cannot establish when the service sent them.
- Capture the baseline. Trigger the same alert while actively using the phone, then repeat after leaving it idle with the screen off. Record whether the phone was idle, the event and arrival times, and whether Power saving, Do Not Disturb, Wi-Fi or mobile data, or Data Saver was active. Keep these conditions as similar as possible and do not change multiple settings yet.
- Rule out alert controls. Confirm that notifications and the relevant categories are enabled in Android and in the app. Temporarily turn off Do Not Disturb and Power saving, then repeat the same trigger. Samsung lists both modes among settings that can interfere with displayed notifications.
- Check background usage limits. Open the Battery or Device care battery settings and find Background usage limits. If the affected app appears in Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, remove it from that list. If your Galaxy offers Never sleeping apps, you can add the app there for the comparison. Repeat the idle test without changing other conditions.
- Compare another app. If possible, trigger a comparable alert in a second app on the same phone under the same conditions. This helps distinguish an app-specific pattern from one affecting several apps, but it cannot identify a service-side cause by itself.
- Compare networks if relevant. Repeat the test on Wi-Fi and mobile data while keeping other settings fixed. Check whether Data Saver is on. A different result across networks is a reason to investigate connectivity or delivery conditions, not proof that the router or carrier is responsible.
- Record the context. Note the Galaxy model, Android and One UI versions, app version, test times, network type, idle status, and the single setting changed between tests. Install available app and phone software updates. If the result remains inconsistent, share these observations with the app provider or Samsung Support.
What the results suggest

A useful result is a repeatable change tied to one controlled difference. A single late notification, or a single successful test after changing several settings, cannot establish where delivery was delayed.

Keep the timestamp log and include the exact settings changed when you ask for help. If only one app is affected, start with its provider; if multiple apps show the same idle-only pattern or device-wide settings change the result, include Samsung Support. Updating software is a sensible check, but an update alone does not demonstrate that the original delay was caused by the phone or the app.
