Feature updates move Windows 11 devices to a new version; quality updates keep the installed version serviced with cumulative fixes. IT admins need both: quality updates address ongoing security and reliability needs, while feature updates move devices to a supported release before their current version reaches end of servicing.

Feature updates and quality updates do different jobs

What to compare Feature update Quality update
Purpose Introduces a new Windows version and its features or changes. Provides incremental security and non-security fixes and improvements for the installed version.
Typical cadence Once a year, in the second half of the calendar year, according to Microsoft’s published release cycle. Monthly security releases, typically on the second Tuesday; optional non-security previews typically arrive in the fourth week. Out-of-band releases occur as needed.
Changes Windows version? Yes. No. Installing the latest cumulative update brings the current version up to date; it does not move the device to a new annual version.
Support impact Starts the servicing timeline for the new version. Maintains the installed version while that version remains in servicing.
Administration Intune feature-update policies can target a Windows version and specify when it may install; phased deployment is commonly used. Intune quality-update policies cover regular and expedited updates. Update rings and Windows Update client settings provide additional controls.
Validation and urgency Plan readiness and staged rollout because a version change may affect user experience, application compatibility, and device readiness. Use monthly servicing for routine fixes; validate optional previews when useful, and assess exceptional out-of-band releases individually.

Microsoft defines a quality update as an incremental monthly update that includes bug fixes, feature improvements, and security issue resolutions. Quality updates are cumulative: the latest monthly security update includes new and previously released fixes, and may incorporate non-security content from the prior optional preview.

How the Windows 11 release cadence works

  • Monthly security or quality update: The routine cumulative servicing release, typically published on the second Tuesday of the month. Microsoft documentation also calls these Patch Tuesday, Update Tuesday, B-week releases, security updates, or latest cumulative updates.
  • Optional non-security preview: A cumulative preview typically published in the fourth week. It can help organizations validate upcoming non-security content before that content is included in a later monthly security release.
  • Out-of-band update: An exceptional release issued outside the routine schedule. Check the individual release’s classification and delivery route; some may require an off-cycle deployment decision.
  • Annual feature update: A new version, typically released in the second half of the calendar year. It brings feature changes and starts that version’s own support timeline.
  • Continuous innovation: Some capabilities can arrive through regular servicing rather than waiting for an annual version change. Microsoft says features may first appear in an optional preview and later in a monthly security update. Some potentially disruptive features may be off by default on managed devices and controlled through policy.

These are Microsoft’s normal published timings, not a guarantee that every device receives an update at the same time. Release timing, availability, and delivery can vary; check the release information for the update in question. See Microsoft’s Windows client update release cycle for terminology and cadence.

Support depends on the installed version and edition

Each Windows 11 version has its own end-of-servicing date. Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance provides 24 months of servicing for Windows 11 Home, Home/SE, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations editions, and 36 months for Enterprise, Education, Enterprise multi-session, and IoT Enterprise editions. The timelines are per version, not a single support period for Windows 11 as a whole.

Once a version is out of servicing, admins should not expect routine monthly quality updates for it. Track each device’s Windows version and edition together, then plan the move to a supported feature version before that release’s specific end date. Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle FAQ explains the edition groupings; use the Windows release health and release information pages for current version details and dates.

Check release-specific exceptions

Do not assume every version is intended as an in-place feature update for existing devices. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 26H1 is scoped to support new devices and is not designed as a feature update for existing devices. Microsoft’s IT-pro guidance identifies 24H2 and 25H2 as the recommended enterprise releases. These are release-specific statements; verify the current release-health guidance before setting rollout targets.

Which management controls apply?

For a version change

In Microsoft Intune, use a feature-update policy to specify the Windows version devices are offered and when it can install. Organizations commonly use controlled, phased rollouts to account for application compatibility, device readiness, and user impact. Microsoft documents this policy surface in its Intune feature updates guidance.

For routine quality servicing

Intune quality-update policies provide a management surface for regular quality updates. Update rings and Windows Update client settings can also govern aspects such as restarts, deadlines, and notifications. The right combination depends on the organization’s management method and operational requirements; these controls are not a universal configuration recipe. See Microsoft’s Intune quality updates guidance.

For urgent fixes and hotpatch

Intune quality-update policies support expedited deployment scenarios for a specified security or critical update. Microsoft also documents hotpatch for supported devices. Hotpatch content is security-only; a quarterly baseline update that requires a restart is needed to bring devices up to date on all features. Confirm that the relevant devices and deployment scenario are eligible before relying on hotpatch. Microsoft’s release-cycle documentation describes these servicing approaches.

For pause and client settings

Windows Update client policies can be configured through Group Policy or an MDM solution such as Intune. Microsoft lists separate controls for pausing feature updates and quality updates, reflecting that the two update types are managed independently. See Windows Update for Business Group Policy settings.

A practical admin decision framework

  1. Identify the installed version and edition. Use both values to determine the applicable servicing timeline and the release’s end date.
  2. Keep routine quality servicing moving. Use the organization’s quality-update policies and client controls to manage ordinary cumulative updates, including deadlines and restart experience where configured.
  3. Assess previews selectively. Use optional non-security previews when early validation of upcoming content is valuable; do not treat them as interchangeable with the monthly security update.
  4. Plan the next feature version separately. Select a target version based on current release guidance, device readiness, application compatibility, and organizational change windows. Use a staged rollout rather than assuming a quality update will perform the migration.
  5. Handle exceptional releases on their own merits. Review an out-of-band update’s classification, availability, and delivery instructions before deciding whether it needs off-cycle deployment.
  6. Recheck version support and eligibility. Use current release-health information to confirm dates and release-specific caveats, and verify device eligibility for options such as hotpatch.

The choice is not feature updates versus quality updates. The admin task is to use the right policy and rollout approach for each: one keeps a supported version current, and the other moves devices to the next version in time.
