The better connection depends on the frequency band in use, signal quality, obstacles, network load, local deployment, and your phone. Strong LTE can be more dependable than weak or blocked 5G; well-covered 5G may offer extra capacity. Compare service where you actually use your phone rather than relying on the network icon or advertised peak speeds.
What “reliable” means on a mobile network
For this comparison, reliability means keeping a usable connection for calls and data at the place and time you need it. A 5G symbol, a high advertised maximum speed, or a coverage estimate does not by itself tell you whether your connection will remain usable indoors, at a cell edge, or during a busy period.
Interference is one factor in radio conditions, but it is not the same as weak coverage or congestion. Distance from a cell site and obstacles can weaken a signal; high demand can strain available capacity. These conditions can overlap, and all can affect the service you experience. The FCC includes an adjacent-cell interference margin in its mobile coverage-map modeling assumptions, which shows interference is a relevant network factor—not that it is unique to 5G or that one generation handles it better.
Why the frequency band and surroundings can matter more than 4G or 5G
The generation label alone does not determine signal strength. The band a network uses, distance from its sites, building materials, terrain, and vegetation all affect radio propagation. Higher-frequency bands generally lose more signal to environmental conditions and blockage, while lower-frequency bands can often provide coverage farther from sites. The outcome at a particular address depends on the bands the local operator deploys there.

Ofcom summarizes the basic propagation issue this way: “Signal strength reduces with increasing distance from the base station, with buildings, terrain and vegetation introducing additional losses, weakening coverage.” That explains why a 5G connection can be less dependable than LTE in a particular indoor or obstructed location, even though 5G is newer.
Coverage, capacity, and interference are different parts of the problem
More network capacity can help when many people are using a cell, but it cannot guarantee reliable service at every location or time. Demand and difficult radio conditions—including indoor use and cell-edge locations—can contribute to congestion. A connection may therefore struggle because the signal is weak, because the cell is busy, because of interference, or because several factors are present at once.

FCC mobile availability maps are modeled estimates. Their assumptions include cell loading, predicted signal strength, interference, and a minimum 90% cell-edge coverage probability for the cited LTE and 5G-NR map assumptions. That 90% is a modeling and reporting input, not a measurement that an individual user has a 90% chance of service in a building or at any particular moment. The FCC also lists 3.00 dB and 5.00 dB interference margins in separate link-budget examples; these are technical modeling inputs for adjacent-cell interference under cell loading, not universal field measurements or a comparison proving either generation is more reliable.
Some 5G service still relies on LTE
Not every 5G connection uses the same architecture. In non-standalone (NSA) 5G, LTE provides the control-plane anchor while NR (New Radio) can add user-data capacity. Standalone (SA) NR has its own control plane. Which arrangement a phone uses depends on the deployed network; the 5G label alone does not tell you whether LTE is part of the connection.

This distinction also makes a simple “5G versus LTE” judgment less straightforward: some 5G service combines the two technologies rather than replacing LTE outright. The architectural distinction does not establish which mode is available from a particular carrier at your location.
How to compare 5G and LTE at the place you use your phone
- Check local coverage as a starting point. Look at your carrier’s coverage information for the specific location. Ofcom and FCC materials describe network and map factors that influence availability, but a modeled map is an estimate, not a guarantee inside a particular building or at a specific time.
- Test the same phone in the same places. If your handset and carrier settings let you select a network mode, compare 5G and LTE in the problem location. Keep the phone, plan, position, and approximate test conditions the same so that differences are easier to interpret.
- Compare at the times service matters. If the connection worsens at busy hours, repeat the comparison then. A result from a quiet period may not describe performance when local demand is higher.
- Check the environment. Note whether you are indoors, in a vehicle, behind substantial building materials, far from a site, or near a cell edge. These conditions can weaken coverage and change which mode performs better.
- Confirm your phone supports the operator’s local bands and technologies. Handset choice affects the consumer experience, and a device must support the relevant deployments to use them. Compatibility alone does not guarantee coverage or solve interference.
- Judge continuity as well as speed. Notice whether calls and data remain usable, whether the connection drops, and whether performance changes by location or time. Choose the mode that is more dependable for your actual use, not simply the one with the newer icon.
When switching to LTE may help
If 5G is inconsistent at a particular location, testing LTE is a practical way to find out whether LTE provides a steadier connection there. Strong LTE may outperform weak or blocked 5G locally. In a different location, well-covered 5G may provide extra capacity and work better. Neither result establishes a universal ranking for interference.

There is no controlled, location-independent comparison in the cited material showing that one generation always retains service better under interference. The evidence covers UK and US regulatory context and 3GPP architecture, not a named carrier, handset, band, or site. Your local comparison is therefore more useful than a general claim that 5G or LTE always wins.
