Generally, yes—if the Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc was eligible, you successfully claimed its digital entitlement, and the game is installed. But Microsoft’s rules still tie that entitlement to your continued possession of the qualifying disc and allow eligibility revalidation. They do not guarantee offline launch in every console, account, or license situation.
What “converting” a disc means
Xbox describes conversion as claiming a digital entitlement: insert a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc into a supported console and launch the game. The entitlement is not automatic for every disc. Xbox said the feature would start with thousands of titles, while noting that not all titles would be eligible at launch. See Xbox’s August 26, 2026 announcement.
Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules say that once a supported disc’s license has been successfully claimed or received, access and installation follow the usual Xbox One and Xbox Series digital-game basis, subject to the disc-to-digital limitations. In practical terms, the game needs to be installed and the entitlement needs to have been claimed before you can rely on it as a digital game.
Why offline play is not an unconditional guarantee
Microsoft’s rules support a qualified “generally yes”: a successfully claimed and installed game follows the normal digital-game access rules. However, the published rules do not explicitly promise that every converted game will launch offline in every account, console, or license state.

- The deepest and most complex world Rockstar Games has ever created. 4K Ultra HD not available on Xbox One or Xbox One S consoles
- Covers a huge range of 19th century American landscapes
- Play as Arthur Morgan, lead enforcer in the notorious Van der Linde gang
- Interact with every character in the world with more than just your gun
The important caveat is that Microsoft conditions this limited-access license on your continued possession of the qualifying disc. Microsoft may require you to revalidate eligibility, and says access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess that disc. The license cannot be transferred separately from it. The rules do not specify what will happen in every case where an offline console requests revalidation, so do not treat offline access as guaranteed regardless of license checks.
Check which Xbox and disc you have
| Console or game type | What the official guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Xbox One or Xbox Series X with a supported Xbox One or Series X disc | Xbox identifies these consoles as devices for claiming an eligible disc’s digital entitlement. The disc must be inserted and the game launched to claim it. Xbox Wire |
| Xbox Series S | Series S uses digital games only and does not play physical discs, so it cannot perform a claim that requires inserting the disc. Xbox backward compatibility FAQ |
| Backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc game | Xbox says that after a backward-compatible game downloads, its disc must still be in the drive to play. The cited conversion rules describe Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs; they do not establish that older-generation discs qualify for this conversion. Xbox backward compatibility FAQ |
Before relying on a converted game offline
- Confirm eligibility for that specific disc. Not all Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs qualify, and eligibility may vary for technical, licensing, publishing, or other reasons. Microsoft says eligibility can be added or removed, so do not assume a title qualifies without checking current program availability.
- Verify that the entitlement was claimed. Merely owning or inserting a disc does not establish that the claim succeeded.
- Install the game before you need offline access. The stated access basis applies after the license has been claimed; an uninstalled game is not ready to play.
- Keep the qualifying disc. Microsoft ties the entitlement to continued possession, even though the game is treated on the usual digital-game basis after a successful claim.
- Check game-specific equipment needs. A disc-to-digital license does not provide any peripheral, accessory, or other equipment a particular game requires.
If the game will not start offline
First identify which case applies: an unclaimed or ineligible Xbox One/Series disc, a claimed but uninstalled game, an older backward-compatible disc game, or a license that is asking to be revalidated. These are not interchangeable situations. For a backward-compatible Xbox 360 or original Xbox game, Xbox’s FAQ says the disc remains necessary in the drive. For a claimed newer entitlement, Microsoft’s published rules allow revalidation but do not document every offline prompt or guarantee a universal offline workaround.
