Use your laptop’s touchpad when portability, its gestures, and its central position suit your work. Choose an external mouse when its shape, placement, or feel gives you more comfortable control. Neither is best for everyone: the right choice depends on your tasks, pointer settings, hand fit, and workspace.
Touchpad vs. mouse at a glance

When the touchpad is the better fit
- You travel or move between work locations. The touchpad is already part of the laptop, so you do not need to pack an extra pointer or find a separate surface.
- You work in a cramped space. Its central position can be more convenient than placing a mouse to the side, especially when that would make you reach awkwardly.
- You use multi-touch actions. Supported touchpads may offer actions such as two-finger right-click, two-finger panning, pinch-to-zoom, and press-and-slide dragging. The actual gestures depend on the device and software. Microsoft describes touchpad input as combining indirect multi-touch input with pointing-device precision in its Windows touchpad interaction documentation. Windows Precision Touchpads support system features such as finger tracking and palm detection.
When an external mouse may suit you better
- You prefer a separate device’s shape or feel. You can choose a mouse that fits your hand, but fit alone does not guarantee comfort: grip, pointer sensitivity, and placement matter too.
- Your desk has room for a comfortable setup. Keep the mouse near the keyboard rather than reaching far to the side. OSHA’s pointer and mouse guidance advises keeping it close to the keyboard and using a straight, neutral wrist posture.
- You prefer its control for your own frequent tasks. Try both devices with the actions you do most often. The available guidance does not establish that a mouse is generally faster or more precise than a touchpad.
Set up either option for comfortable use
If you use a mouse
- Place it close to the keyboard to reduce reaching.
- Choose a size and shape that fit your operating hand, and adjust sensitivity so you can control the pointer comfortably.
- Use a relaxed grip and keep your wrist straight rather than bent. CCOHS recommends trying designs to find one that fits and supports a neutral wrist position; see its mouse selection guidance.
- If your setup allows, consider placing a cordless mouse in front of the keyboard rather than far to the side. CCOHS discusses this and other placement options in its mouse location guidance.
If you use the touchpad
- Use it in the laptop’s central position if that feels comfortable and avoids an awkward reach.
- Check the settings available for your particular device and operating system; supported gestures and controls vary.
Reduce extended pointing
Use keyboard shortcuts for actions you repeat often, and take opportunities to vary how you work. Neither a particular pointing device nor a wrist rest is established here as a way to prevent injury. CCOHS notes that evidence on wrist rests is inconclusive.
If your Windows touchpad stops responding
Microsoft’s support steps apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. A missing or outdated driver may be the cause; follow Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting guidance:
- Check for driver updates through Windows Update.
- If that does not help, use Device Manager to update the touchpad driver.
- If the problem continues, reinstall the device in Device Manager; Windows may then prompt a driver download.
- If these steps do not restore it, contact your computer’s manufacturer.
How to decide
Start with the setup you have: choose the touchpad for a portable, central option, or a mouse if its fit and feel work better and you can place it close to the keyboard. Then judge each option by comfort during your usual tasks—not by an assumed universal advantage in speed, accuracy, or ergonomics.
