Choose a satellite-based wildfire detection service by comparing coverage and observation cadence, end-to-end alert time, detection scale, location uncertainty, validation evidence, and fit with your response workflow. A satellite hotspot is a thermal anomaly—not confirmation of a wildfire, a fire perimeter, or a guarantee of early warning. Evaluate every specification against the time your organization actually has to investigate and respond.

What a satellite fire alert tells you—and what it does not

An active-fire alert identifies a thermal anomaly observed by a satellite instrument. It does not prove that a wildfire is burning at that location, indicate that an entire displayed pixel is on fire, or map the fire’s boundary. Other heat sources can produce anomalies, while clouds and other conditions can hide a fire. NASA’s FIRMS map cautions that anomalies may have other causes and have limited accuracy; it states: “Do not use for the preservation of life or property. Satellite-derived active fire / thermal anomalies have limited accuracy.” NASA FIRMS map and disclaimer.

That distinction should shape procurement: treat satellite alerts as inputs for triage and verification, not as a replacement for official incident reporting, ground checks, or your emergency procedures.

Use NASA FIRMS as a public baseline

NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) provides active-fire data from MODIS and VIIRS. NASA Applied Sciences lists MODIS active-fire points at 1 km resolution and VIIRS points at 375 m, with FIRMS data updated every three hours. These are distinct sensor products, not interchangeable measurements or a promise that a location will be observed every three hours. NASA Applied Sciences: Fires.

FIRMS is useful for understanding the scale and cadence of a public satellite-data baseline. It is not evidence that a commercial service will meet your organization’s coverage, latency, or life-safety requirements.

Compare services against your operating area

Build the comparison around the area you need monitored, the decisions an alert must support, and the practical time available to act. Request current, written answers for each item rather than relying on a product headline.

Coverage and observation cadence

  • Does the service cover every site, boundary, or asset in your area of interest?
  • At what times and with what expected revisit gaps can it observe each location?
  • Does it use low Earth orbit (LEO) passes, geostationary (GEO) observations, or a combination? Ask how the approach affects coverage and observation timing for your specific geography.
  • What happens during a missed pass, an outage, or a period of poor observing conditions?

A short processing interval cannot make up for a long wait until the next observation. A fire may start and grow between observations, or be extinguished before a satellite sees it.

End-to-end alert latency

Ask the provider to separate the elapsed time from observation to data transmission, processing, and delivery to your team. Get the definitions behind any latency statistic, including what event starts and stops the clock, how it is measured, and how outages are reported. The relevant measure is time until your staff receive an actionable alert—not algorithm processing time alone.

For example, OroraTech’s support documentation says detections are processed within three minutes after data receipt and describes 30-minute GEO and 60–90-minute LEO update intervals. These are provider statements, not a guarantee that your location will be observed or alerted on that schedule. OroraTech: Fire Events not detected.

Resolution and minimum detectable fire size

Request both the product’s resolution and the assumptions behind its minimum detectable fire size. Ask whether detection thresholds vary with vegetation, terrain, atmospheric conditions, or the satellite’s viewing geometry. A finer product resolution does not, by itself, establish that small fires will reliably be detected in your operating conditions.

NASA’s Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) page lists OroraTech OTC-P1 Level 2 near-real-time active-fire detections at 200 m product resolution and a minimum detectable fire size of 4 × 4 m. Those are product specifications, not independent proof of performance across all locations or conditions. NASA CSDA: OroraTech.

Geolocation uncertainty

Get the provider’s stated location-error measure and ask what it means in practice for dispatch, asset triage, or a ground search. A point on a map should not be treated as an exact ignition location unless the service documents that level of precision.

Security Surveillance Hardwired Smoke Detector Camera with Motion Detection

  • 1080P and 4K live streaming options
  • Lifetime technical support

OroraTech’s documentation for its OT-NRT closed beta describes expected geolocation accuracy of about 600 m CE90. This is a provider-stated expectation, not an independent benchmark, and it appears in a different product description from the OTC-P1 CSDA listing. OroraTech: NRT closed beta.

Detection reliability and false alerts

Ask for independently evaluated detection and false-alarm results, the ground-truth method, and the geographies, seasons, fuels, and fire sizes covered by validation. Ask how the service handles industrial heat, prescribed burns, and agricultural fires. Do not infer a general accuracy rate from a product page or a single performance figure without its validation context.

The published sources cited here do not establish a named independent wildfire-detection accuracy statistic or a cross-provider performance benchmark. Treat that absence as a reason to request relevant validation evidence, not as proof that any particular service is accurate or inaccurate.

Workflow, delivery, and support

  • Can alerts reach your team through the required API, GIS platform, or notification channel?
  • Can staff retain and review alert history, and for how long?
  • What support is available when an alert is ambiguous, delayed, or disputed?
  • Can your organization investigate and act on alerts at the times they arrive?

Workflow fit is part of detection value: an alert that your team cannot receive, interpret, or verify in time may not help the decision it was purchased to support.

Licensing, availability, and cost

Confirm which products are available to your organization, the license that permits your intended use, data rights, geographic or user limits, and any restrictions on redistribution or operational use. NASA notes that commercial products offered through CSDA are subject to review and approval and applicable licenses. Product availability and access terms can change.

Request current pricing, coverage tiers, minimum commitments, and renewal terms directly from vendors. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable price list, so a meaningful cost comparison requires quotes under the same coverage and use assumptions.

How to assess a commercial specification

Specifications from different pages can describe different products, access states, or measurement stages. Do not merge them into one service guarantee. The OroraTech examples below illustrate why each number needs its source and context:

Published item What the source says How to interpret it
OTC-P1 Level 2 near-real-time active-fire product NASA CSDA lists 200 m product resolution, median latency below one hour, and minimum detectable fire size of 4 × 4 m. These are listed product specifications; they do not establish independent field performance for every geography or condition. NASA CSDA also applies review, approval, and licensing requirements.
OT-NRT OroraTech support documentation describes a closed beta, eight OTC-P1 satellites, 200 × 200 m² resolution, and approximately 600 m CE90 expected geolocation accuracy. This is a separate provider documentation description and access state. Confirm current status, availability, and terms with the provider rather than treating it as the same product listing as OTC-P1 Level 2.
Detection timing in support documentation OroraTech says processing is within three minutes after data receipt and cites 30-minute GEO and 60–90-minute LEO update intervals. Processing begins after receipt; observation and transmission add time. The stated intervals are not a guarantee for each location or alert.

Turn the comparison into a procurement decision

  1. Define the decision and response window. Identify which assets or areas matter, who receives an alert, what they must do next, and how quickly they need to do it.
  2. Set the geographic and temporal requirement. Ask each provider to document coverage and expected observation gaps for the actual area, not just a general coverage map.
  3. Request comparable evidence. Obtain resolution, minimum-detection assumptions, geolocation error, end-to-end latency definitions, validation methods, false-alert information, and outage handling in writing.
  4. Check operational fit and terms. Confirm integrations, notification channels, support, data retention, license permissions, availability, and full commercial terms.
  5. Validate the response process. Establish how alerts will be checked against official incident reporting and ground verification before operational action, and how uncertainty or missed detections will be handled.

Do not select a service for life-safety use on the strength of a product page alone. A procurement decision should depend on evidence relevant to your operating area and a response process that remains effective when an alert is late, ambiguous, or absent.
