The Moon’s shape does not change: as it travels around Earth, we see different portions of its sunlit half. That changing view creates the familiar sequence of eight phases, from new Moon to full Moon and back again, over about 29.5 days.
Why the Moon appears to change shape
Sunlight illuminates half of the Moon at a time. As the Moon orbits Earth, the angle between the Sun, Moon, and us changes, so the visible portion of that illuminated half grows or shrinks. NASA puts it simply: “The Moon is always half-lit by the Sun.” (NASA Science: Moon Phases.)
Moonlight is reflected sunlight, not light the Moon produces. The phases are a viewing-geometry effect, not a shadow moving across the Moon. Earth’s shadow affects our view only during a lunar eclipse, when the Moon passes through it (NASA Science: Top Moon Questions).
The eight phases of the Moon, in order
The familiar phase cycle takes about 29.5 days, measured from one comparable phase to the next (NASA Science; NASA JPL Education). The eight names describe key points in that repeating cycle; the Moon’s appearance changes continuously between them.

Bright-side directions below follow NASA’s Northern Hemisphere diagrams. In the Southern Hemisphere, or when your viewing orientation is rotated, the bright side may appear on the opposite side.
- New Moon: The near side facing Earth is mostly dark, so the Moon is usually hard to see. It is in roughly the same direction as the Sun and rises and sets near it. The Moon’s orbit is tilted relative to Earth’s path around the Sun, so it does not usually pass directly between Earth and the Sun; not every new Moon brings a solar eclipse.
- Waxing Crescent: A narrow crescent is visible and grows from day to day. In NASA’s Northern Hemisphere description, the lit edge is on the right.
- First Quarter: The visible disk looks half illuminated. “Quarter” means the Moon is about one-quarter of the way through its phase cycle—not that only one-quarter of its face is bright.
- Waxing Gibbous: More than half of the visible disk is lit, and the bright portion continues to grow toward full Moon.
- Full Moon: The face visible from Earth is nearly fully illuminated. The Moon is opposite the Sun in the sky, rising around sunset and setting around sunrise.
- Waning Gibbous: More than half of the disk remains lit, but the illuminated portion is shrinking after full Moon.
- Third Quarter or Last Quarter: The disk again looks half illuminated, with the bright side opposite the first-quarter view in conventional Northern Hemisphere diagrams. It rises around midnight and sets around midday.
- Waning Crescent: A thin, shrinking crescent remains before the cycle returns to new Moon. It typically rises in the very early morning and sets in the afternoon.
How to read waxing, waning, crescent, and gibbous
- Waxing means the portion of the visible disk that is lit is increasing, moving toward full Moon.
- Waning means the illuminated portion is decreasing, moving away from full Moon toward new Moon.
- Crescent describes a Moon with less than half of its visible disk illuminated.
- Gibbous describes one with more than half illuminated but not yet full.
Both quarter phases look half-lit. Their names mark where the Moon is in its cycle, while crescent, gibbous, and full describe how much of the visible face is illuminated.

When each phase is usually visible
These are broad patterns, not exact predictions. Moonrise and moonset shift with date and location; use a local moonrise calendar for specific times. NASA’s general guide gives these approximate patterns:

Why the Moon can be hard to see at new Moon
At new Moon, the sunlit side mostly faces away from Earth, leaving the near side dark. Because the Moon is also roughly in the same direction as the Sun, it is generally lost in daylight glare and difficult to spot. A solar eclipse is possible only when the alignment is close enough for the Moon to pass in front of the Sun, which does not happen at every new Moon.

No. Ordinary phases come from how much of the Moon’s sunlit half is visible from Earth. Earth’s shadow is involved in a lunar eclipse, not the month-to-month phase cycle (NASA Science).
