Before erasing your iPhone, make a fresh iCloud or computer backup, confirm it completed, and check that important data is syncing where you expect. Then erase the phone and restore from the verified backup during setup. Apple notes that a backup gives you a copy of information to use if a device is replaced, lost, or damaged.
Choose where to back up your iPhone
Apple supports backups to iCloud or to a Mac or Windows computer, and you can create both for an additional recovery option. Whichever method you choose, wait for it to finish and verify the completed backup before erasing the phone.

Make and verify an iCloud backup
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings and tap your name, then iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi until the backup finishes.
- On the same screen, check the displayed date and time under the last successful backup. If storage is insufficient, follow the on-screen options; available storage offers can vary by account. Apple’s iCloud backup instructions provide the steps.
Make a computer backup
On a Mac
- Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a compatible data cable and select the iPhone in Finder.
- Open General, select Back up all of the data on your iPhone to this Mac, then click Back Up Now.
- Check Finder’s backup information to confirm a completed backup. Finder backup support requires macOS 10.15 or later; older macOS versions use iTunes. See Apple’s computer backup instructions.
On a Windows PC
- Connect the iPhone to the PC and open the supported Apple app for your setup: Apple’s current main backup guidance describes iTunes, while its Windows guide also documents the Apple Devices app.
- Select the iPhone, start a backup, and confirm that the app reports it completed before disconnecting the phone.
App availability and labels can vary by Windows setup. Follow Apple’s backup instructions for the app installed on your PC.
Decide whether to encrypt the computer backup
Computer backups are unencrypted by default. If you need the additional categories Apple says an encrypted backup can include—saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history—turn on Encrypt local backup in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes and set a password. Keep that password: it is required to restore the encrypted backup. Face ID, Touch ID, and device passcode data are not included. Confirm the backup completed after enabling encryption. Check what syncs separately from the backup
An iCloud device backup covers information and settings that are not already syncing to iCloud. This means a backup is not necessarily a second copy of everything stored on the phone:
- If iCloud Photos is enabled, photos sync to iCloud rather than being included in the daily device backup.
- If Messages in iCloud is enabled, messages sync separately.
- Some app data stored in iCloud Drive is stored there rather than in the device backup.
Before erasing, check the sync status of anything important that changed recently, along with the backup’s date and time. Apple describes these distinctions in its iCloud backup content guide.

Erase the iPhone after confirming the backup
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the device passcode or Apple Account password if prompted, then follow the confirmation steps.
- If the iPhone has an eSIM, choose whether to keep or erase it. An erased eSIM may need to be reactivated by your carrier.

Restore from iCloud
During iPhone setup, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup, sign in with the relevant Apple Account, and select the backup. Check its date and size before choosing it. Follow Apple’s restore instructions.
Restore from a computer
Connect the iPhone to the computer used for the backup, then restore through Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes according to your computer setup. Review the backup date and size when selecting it. If it is encrypted, enter its backup password. See Apple’s computer restore guidance.

If you have already set up the iPhone as new and need to restore from a backup, Apple’s documented restore process requires erasing it again to return to setup.
