If your PS5 lags online, first check PlayStation Network and the affected game’s server status. If both are operating normally, test the console’s connection, compare Wi-Fi with a wired LAN connection, and restart the PS5 and network equipment before changing router settings. These checks help separate a service problem from a home-network problem, but a successful connection test or a particular NAT type does not prove what is causing lag in a specific game.
Start by finding out what is affected
Note whether the problem occurs in one game or across multiple online services, whether it started suddenly, and whether other devices or the PS5’s general internet connection are affected. These clues help choose what to check next; they do not identify the cause by themselves. Trouble limited to one game makes that game’s service status especially relevant, while trouble across services is a reason to check PSN and your local connection.
Check PSN and the game’s servers
Check PlayStation Service Status and the affected game’s own service-status page or website. Sony recommends checking PSN status when troubleshooting connection errors and checking a game’s website when it reports that its servers are unavailable. The PlayStation status page is dynamic, so check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an earlier result.
If PSN or the game reports an outage or maintenance, wait and try again later instead of changing router settings. A service can be available while an individual game still has a server-side issue.

Run the PS5 connection test
- On the console, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Review the results for a connection problem. The test checks the console’s network connection; it does not report the performance of every game server or establish the cause of in-game latency.
- If the test indicates a problem, check that the PS5 is using the intended Wi-Fi network and that its saved credentials are correct. For connection setup, Sony documents the options under Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection.
Sony says PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not IPv6-only networks. If your router is configured for IPv6 only, ask the router maker or ISP how to enable IPv4 rather than changing advanced settings at random. Sony also advises asking your ISP or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with IP, DNS, MTU, or proxy settings.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi, move it closer to the router and remove obstructions between them. Then, if practical, connect it to the router by Ethernet and compare the result. Sony recommends trying a wired connection where possible for certain PS5 network errors; this is a useful way to check whether the wireless link is involved, not a guarantee of lower in-game latency.

- Connect a LAN cable from the PS5 to the router.
- On PS5, go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect.
- Try the affected game again and note whether the connection becomes more reliable or the problem stays the same.
If you do not have a suitable cable, an Ethernet LAN cable is an optional way to make this comparison. A wired test cannot fix a game-server outage, upstream congestion, or every other cause of lag.
Restart the console and network equipment
- Restart the PS5.
- Turn off the router and, where applicable, the modem. Sony’s cited error guidance says to wait at least five minutes before restarting the router; then power the equipment back on and let it reconnect.
- Try the game again. If the router’s firmware may be out of date, follow the router maker’s instructions to check for and install an update.
Sony also advises waiting and trying again later when earlier connection checks do not resolve the issue, since congestion may be temporary. A restart can help with a connection failure, but it does not establish that the router caused a particular game’s lag.

Check NAT and router setup if problems persist
NAT is relevant to whether devices can connect to one another and to matchmaking; it is not, on its own, a measurement of ping, packet loss, or frame-rate performance. Activision’s general Port Forward and NAT FAQ describes Sony’s Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 labels and explains that restrictive NAT can limit which other players a user can connect to. In that explanation, Type 3 is the most restrictive of the three. This is general publisher guidance, not a current Sony PS5 specification, and it does not mean every Type 3 connection causes lag or that Type 1 is required for normal play.
Sony specifically recommends removing multiple NAT routers when troubleshooting error NW-102468-1. This can apply when a second router is connected behind an ISP gateway that also routes traffic. Check whether your setup has more than one router performing NAT before making changes. Ask your ISP or router maker for help with bridge mode, port forwarding, or firewall settings; the appropriate configuration depends on the equipment and service.

Leave port changes as a later, error-specific step
For PS5 error WS-116520-5, Sony says that, if possible, users can try opening TCP ports 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480, and UDP ports 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. Sony directs users to contact their ISP for details. This advice is specific to that error and is not a general PS5 lag fix. Do not open ports or expose the console broadly without understanding your router and ISP setup.
