The supported signal stations, coverage, buttons, and setup steps depend on the caliber and where you use the watch. Find the matching Citizen manual before trying to sync it.
1. Confirm that your watch supports radio time reception
Look for the model or caliber number on the caseback, then use it to find the corresponding Citizen manual and movement information. Citizen’s H46 Features page, for example, says that H46 receives time signals from Germany and automatically adjusts the time and calendar. That describes H46, not every Eco-Drive watch. The same page describes Eco-Drive as light-powered and says the watch needs no periodic battery replacement.
Check which signal stations your specific caliber supports and whether reception is available in your location. Citizen says radio-controlled models may support one or more stations in Japan, the United States, Germany, and China; support is not universal across models. Its FAQ notes that signal support varies by model. If you are unsure, use the Citizen manual for the exact caliber rather than assuming that another Eco-Drive model’s instructions apply.
2. Prepare the watch before trying reception
- Charge it: If the second hand advances in two-second jumps or the watch has stopped, Citizen’s H29 reception troubleshooting page says the reserve is nearly empty and advises charging. Low charge can interfere with operation and reception.
- Set the home city or time zone: Some movements use the world-time setting to select a signal. If the zone is wrong, the watch may seek the wrong signal. Follow your caliber’s instructions; city and zone controls differ.
- Check daylight-saving time (DST): An incorrect summer-time setting can leave the display one hour fast or slow. The setting method depends on the movement.
3. Start manual reception using your caliber’s controls
Use the matching Citizen manual for the exact crown and button sequence. Do not copy a procedure from a different movement. As one movement-specific example, Citizen’s H29 guide says to push the crown in and hold the button for at least two seconds. The second hand first indicates the previous reception result, then points to “RX” when reception begins. U680 uses a different procedure involving mode selection and the lower-right button, as shown in its manual.

4. Give reception a better chance
- Take the watch off and place it on a stable surface near a window.
- Keep it still while reception is in progress.
- If your manual identifies the antenna direction, orient the watch as it specifies. Citizen places the H29 antenna at 8:00, while the U680 manual identifies its antenna at 9:00. These are movement-specific instructions, not a universal Citizen rule.
- Choose a location with usable coverage for one of the stations your model supports. Buildings, the reception environment, and regional coverage can affect success.
Wait until the attempt ends, then read the reception result as explained in your manual. U680’s manual gives a typical reception time of about two minutes and a maximum of fifteen minutes; that timing is specific to U680.
5. Troubleshoot a failed sync or incorrect time
If reception fails or the result is “NO”
Check that the watch is charged, the home city or time zone is correct, and your location is within usable coverage for a supported station. Then retry near a window with the watch stationary. Citizen’s H29 guide notes that reception conditions and regional coverage can cause a failed attempt.

If the watch is one hour fast or slow
Check the DST or summer-time setting against the current local time. Use the instructions for your caliber to change it.
If reception succeeds but the display is still wrong
Verify the home city or time-zone setting and check the hands’ reference position. Citizen identifies an incorrect reference position as a possible reason that the display remains wrong after reception. The procedure for correcting it is movement-specific.

If automatic reception does not occur
Check that automatic reception is enabled and that the watch has sufficient charge. Consult the caliber’s manual for its reception schedule and controls. For U680, the manual lists default attempts at 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 4 a.m., with the 4 a.m. attempt configurable; this schedule should not be assumed for other calibers.
6. Set the time manually if radio reception is unavailable
Citizen manuals provide manual-setting instructions for supported movements. If your watch cannot receive a signal where you use it, or reception remains unsuccessful, follow the manual for your caliber to set the time. Do not infer a manual-setting procedure or accuracy specification from another movement.

What to check before choosing a replacement
If your current watch does not support radio reception, look for a radio-controlled Eco-Drive model that supports a station receivable in your region. Compare the exact caliber’s supported stations and features, including time-zone selection, DST handling, manual reception controls, and manual setting. Eco-Drive by itself does not establish that a watch is an atomic timekeeping watch.
