Often, yes—if the message is still in Outlook’s Recoverable Items store and your account’s recovery window has not expired. Open Deleted Items and use the recovery command for your version of Outlook. The result depends on whether you have Outlook.com or a work or school mailbox, and on any recovery policies set by your organization.

Start with Deleted Items and the recovery command

First, check Deleted Items and search for the message. If it is no longer there, look for Outlook’s Recoverable Items command. The wording and location differ between New Outlook or Outlook on the web and classic Outlook for Windows.

New Outlook or Outlook on the web

  1. Open Deleted Items.
  2. Choose Recover items deleted from this folder. The control’s exact appearance can vary by interface.
  3. Select the message and choose Restore.
  4. After it returns to Deleted Items, move it to a regular mail folder so it is easier to find.

Microsoft’s recovery instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, 2016, Outlook.com, and New Outlook for Windows: Recover deleted items in Outlook.

Classic Outlook for Windows

  1. Make sure Outlook is online and connected to the mail server.
  2. Select Deleted Items.
  3. On the ribbon, choose Home > Recover Deleted Items From Server.
  4. Select the messages you want and restore them.

If Recover Deleted Items From Server is missing, Microsoft says this recovery feature is not supported for that account through classic Outlook. Try the web interface if available, or ask your organization’s administrator about recovery options.

Outlook.com

Microsoft’s Outlook.com guidance says messages removed from Deleted Items can be recovered for 30 days. Use a computer for the recovery action; Microsoft says it cannot be done through the Outlook mobile apps or a mobile browser. The 30-day period is specific to Outlook.com and should not be assumed to apply to work or school accounts. See Recover and restore deleted items in Outlook.com.

If you remove a message from Outlook.com’s Recoverable Items store, Microsoft says it is permanently deleted and cannot be restored. The same page explains this limit: Outlook.com deleted-item recovery guidance.

Work or school accounts

For Exchange or Microsoft 365 mailboxes managed by an organization, the administrator may configure how long deleted items remain recoverable. Microsoft gives an illustrative case in which messages spend 30 days in Deleted Items and may then be recoverable for up to another 14 days. Those periods are an example, not a guarantee for every mailbox. Ask your administrator whether the mailbox’s retention or recovery policy still covers the message. Microsoft’s general guidance is at Recover deleted items in Outlook.

If the message is not in recovery results

  • Search Deleted Items and Junk Email; filters or inbox and Sweep rules may have hidden or moved the message. Microsoft describes checking rules and settings in its Outlook.com email troubleshooting guidance.
  • For classic Outlook, confirm that the client is online and that the server recovery command is available.
  • For Outlook.com, try from a computer and check whether the message is still within the published 30-day recovery period.
  • For a work or school mailbox, contact the administrator promptly and ask about the applicable retention policy. Microsoft notes that an administrator may still be able to recover an item in some cases after the usual period, but this is not assured.

Microsoft says that if neither the user nor an administrator can find the item, it was probably permanently deleted from the mailbox and cannot be recovered. Outlook.com specifically treats items purged from Recoverable Items as permanently deleted.
