X-BAT is Shield AI’s proposed unmanned, AI-piloted aircraft designed to take off and land vertically without a prepared runway. Its planned design combines a GE F110-GE-129E engine and thrust-vectoring nozzle with Shield AI’s Hivemind autonomy software. It remains in development: the public updates cited here report engine-and-nozzle ground testing, not an X-BAT flight or demonstrated combat capability.

What X-BAT is—and what it is not

Shield AI announced X-BAT in October 2025 as an autonomous vertical-takeoff-and-landing (VTOL) combat aircraft. The concept is intended to operate from ships, islands, and austere sites that lack conventional runways. Shield AI lists strike, counter-air, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) among its planned roles.

Those descriptions are program goals, not proof of an operational aircraft. Shield AI’s product page lists first VTOL flights in 2026, mission capability in 2028, and production in 2029 as planned milestones. On September 30, 2026, the company said flight testing would begin later that year. The July 2026 public update describes ground tests of the propulsion system, not an X-BAT flight. Shield AI’s X-BAT page and its September 2026 update provide the company’s schedule and program description.

How vertical takeoff and landing are intended to work

X-BAT’s proposed propulsion system pairs a GE F110-GE-129E engine with an Axisymmetric Vectoring Exhaust Nozzle (AVEN). The nozzle is designed to redirect engine exhaust, providing thrust vectoring for vertical flight, launch, and landing; GE also says it can improve maneuverability in horizontal flight. In other words, the aircraft is intended to use redirected engine thrust to control its vertical-flight phases rather than relying on a runway. That is the design concept, not a flight capability publicly demonstrated on X-BAT.

On July 20, 2026, GE reported integration and actuation tests and an engine light-off with the F110-GE-129E and AVEN. GE described the work as ground testing in preparation for flight testing aboard an X-BAT prototype. The nozzle’s earlier development program included a thrust-vectoring system that flew on an F-16 in the 1990s; that history is not an X-BAT flight record. GE’s announcement gives the test details.

How Hivemind is meant to pilot and coordinate missions

Shield AI identifies Hivemind as the autonomy software intended to control X-BAT. The company says it is designed to navigate and carry out assigned tasks in degraded or disconnected conditions, including when GPS or communications are unavailable or jammed. Shield AI also describes operation as a standalone aircraft or in collaboration with crewed aircraft and other X-BATs: a commander can assign tasks to a team, while each aircraft autonomously executes its assignment.

Tamiya 61098 1/48 Lockheed Martin F-16CJ Plastic Model Airplane Kit
  • IFF antenna array in front of the cockpit distinguishes this CCIP-equipped model from other F-16s.
  • Curved form of the F-16 accurately reproduced with trademark Tamiya precision.
  • Moveable horizontal stabilizers. "Flaperons" can be modelled in the up or down positions.
  • Full ordnance load including AGM-88 HARM, AIM-120C AMRAAM, AIM-9M/X Sidewinder, ECM pod, and fuel tanks included.
  • Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.

These are intended functions described by the developer, not results of an X-BAT operational test. Shield AI’s materials refer to autonomy experience on other platforms, but the cited public updates do not document Hivemind flying X-BAT. The company’s product description outlines the proposed mission-control concept.

What missions and payloads are planned

Shield AI names strike, counter-air, electronic warfare, and ISR as intended mission areas. In its September 2026 update, the company said X-BAT was designed to carry weapons up to the 2,000-pound class in internal bays, as well as power-intensive electronic-warfare and ISR payloads. These are developer-stated design aims; the cited material does not establish a tested loadout or operational mission performance.

How to interpret X-BAT’s published range figures

Shield AI’s October 2025 announcement claimed more than 2,000 nautical miles of range with a full mission payload. Separate official materials later stated a 1,000-nautical-mile objective combat radius: Shield AI in September 2026 and GE in July 2026. These figures use different labels and should not be treated as competing measurements of the same quantity. The cited announcements do not provide shared mission profiles, reserve assumptions, or other details that would allow a direct reconciliation.

Shield AI also claimed in 2025 that three X-BATs could fit in the deck space of one legacy fighter or helicopter. That is a company footprint claim, not an independently established comparison. The company has described its affordability goal as far below the cost of fifth-generation jets, but Defense News reported in 2025 that Shield AI had not disclosed a price. No specific price or independently verified savings figure is established in the cited material. Defense News’ report covers the announcement and the absence of a disclosed price.
