Reduce a Linux server’s attack surface in stages: inventory its listeners, identify which applications and clients need each one, narrow access to those paths, and disable only services confirmed to be unused. Check application health and monitoring after every change, and keep a recovery route available. The commands below follow Ubuntu documentation; firewall tools, service defaults, and mandatory access-control systems vary by distribution.
What counts as an unnecessary open port?
A listening port is not automatically reachable from the internet: exposure also depends on the address the service binds to, host and network firewall rules, and routing. Ubuntu’s Security Team defines an “unnecessarily” open port as one exposed to an untrusted network when it does not need to be, or one belonging to a service no longer in use. See Ubuntu’s guidance on unnecessarily open ports and its overview of open ports.
The goal is not to make every server show no listeners. It is to ensure each required service is reachable only by the clients and networks that need it, while removing services with no remaining purpose.

ss -utlnTo see the owning process when you have root access, run:
sudo ss -utlnpReview IPv4 and IPv6 results. By default,
ssreports the current shell’s network namespace; if the deployment uses other network namespaces, inspect those too. Ubuntu explains the listener-inventory approach in its open-port guidance. -
Map each listener to an owner and a real requirement
For every entry, identify the process, its purpose, its callers, the protocol and port it needs, and the intended network interface. Check application configuration, service dependencies, deployment documentation, monitoring, and known client connections rather than guessing from a port number. Classify the listener as host-local, private-network, or public-facing, and note which specific sources must connect.

A service used only by processes on the same machine should generally bind to loopback. If remote access is needed, prefer the required private or public address over a wildcard such as
0.0.0.0,[::], or*, where the application supports that choice. Confirm IPv4 and IPv6 behavior; a change to one address family does not necessarily change the other.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Restrict traffic before stopping services
When a service is required, reduce who can reach it rather than disabling it. Ubuntu documents UFW as its default firewall configuration tool, but the documented setup starts with UFW disabled. First determine which firewall manager and ruleset the server actually uses; do not layer another manager on top without understanding how the active rules interact. See Ubuntu’s firewall documentation.
On a UFW-managed Ubuntu host, inspect the current state with:

Add the necessary management and application rules before enabling a firewall. If you are working remotely, keep a second SSH session open or use console access where possible; verify the resulting rules and that a fresh connection and application health checks still work. UFW also provides numbered status and rule inspection for reviewing or removing a specific rule.

Disable only services confirmed to be unused
Before stopping a systemd-managed service, establish that no application, scheduled task, monitoring agent, or other unit depends on it. sudo systemctl stop <service>sudo systemctl disable <service>Use the real unit name, inspect its dependencies, and verify its state after the change. Do not remove packages or disable services in bulk: a service that looks incidental may support an application path you have not yet mapped.
-
Validate each change and keep a rollback path
After each individual bind, firewall, or service change, compare the listener inventory with your baseline; check service status, application health checks, logs, and monitoring. Confirm that required clients can still connect and that unwanted sources cannot. Keep a record of changed settings and the previous values or rules so you can restore them if a check fails. If a service stops responding, use the recovery route, revert the most recent change, and test again before proceeding.
Choose the least disruptive control that solves the exposure
| Control | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow the service bind address | A required service should be reachable only on loopback or a particular interface. | Confirm the application supports the address, and test all required clients and address families. Ubuntu recommends avoiding unnecessary wildcard binds in its open-port guidance. |
| Restrict firewall sources and ports | The service must remain available, but only to selected networks or hosts. | Use the active firewall manager, preserve management access, and verify the effective ruleset. Ubuntu’s examples and UFW guidance are in its firewall documentation. |
| Stop and disable a service | The service has been confirmed unused and is not needed by another unit. | Inspect dependencies and check systemd state, listeners, application behavior, and monitoring after the change. A disabled unit may still be started as another unit’s dependency, as Ubuntu notes in its service guidance. |
| Constrain application privileges | A service must run, but its access to system resources should be limited. | Use the mandatory access-control system supported by the distribution and operations team. On Ubuntu, AppArmor uses profiles; SELinux is a distinct policy model with different support expectations there. See Canonical’s privilege-restriction overview. |
These controls can complement one another. Binding a service to the right interface limits where it listens; a firewall limits which sources can reach it; service removal eliminates a listener only when the service is unnecessary. Choose based on the mapped application path, not on a blanket target such as “close every port.”

Keep remaining services patched and confined
Review security-update coverage
Security updates reduce exposure to known vulnerabilities in services that remain enabled. Canonical documents unattended-upgrades as included by default on Ubuntu Server and Desktop beginning with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, with daily security updates and documented default timing of 24 hours for security updates and 7 days for normal updates. Those are Ubuntu defaults, not a guarantee for every release or host: inspect the machine’s configuration and logs, and account for application validation and any automatic reboot behavior. Third-party repositories and PPAs need separate configuration if their packages are to be included. Consult Canonical’s security-updates documentation and release-specific security-features overview.
Use AppArmor where supported
AppArmor is Ubuntu’s default mandatory access-control mechanism. Its profiles constrain application capabilities and permissions. Where a suitable profile exists, test the service under it; complain mode allows actions while logging policy violations and can help refine a profile before enforcement. Enforce mode applies the profile, so validate the real workload and inspect policy logs when troubleshooting. Prefer package-provided profiles and local adjustments over casually editing package-managed files. The Ubuntu Server AppArmor guide covers status and profile management; Canonical’s privilege-restriction guidance describes the broader model.
When to use compliance automation
For Ubuntu fleets with formal compliance requirements, Canonical documents Ubuntu Security Guide as a way to automate CIS Benchmark and DISA STIG hardening and produce audit reports in applicable Ubuntu Pro contexts. This is an optional compliance workflow, not a prerequisite for reducing exposure on an ordinary server. A benchmark profile still needs workload review and validation so its changes do not interrupt required services. See Canonical’s compliance automation documentation.
Distribution-specific cautions
The procedure is portable; the exact commands and defaults are not. UFW, systemd unit names, package profiles, security-update configuration, and the supported mandatory access-control system depend on the distribution and host setup. On a non-Ubuntu server, identify the firewall manager and MAC system actually in use, then follow that distribution’s documentation rather than copying Ubuntu-specific commands. Do not apply a benchmark profile or firewall rules to production without checking dependencies, access paths, and recovery options.
