For remote access to a QNAP NAS, the relevant service is myQNAPcloud Link—not myQNAPcloud One. QNAP describes myQNAPcloud One as cloud storage for storing, managing, and sharing files. The steps below cover remote NAS access through myQNAPcloud and Link, which can connect without manual router port forwarding.

Before you start: choose the right QNAP service

myQNAPcloud Link is the QNAP remote-access component used to connect to a registered NAS. myQNAPcloud One is described by QNAP as cloud storage, so it is not the setup workflow covered here. See QNAP’s myQNAPcloud One product information.

For browser access, registration gives you a SmartURL to open the NAS login page. For compatible mobile apps, Link lets you connect using the QNAP ID associated with the NAS. In either case, the QNAP ID associates the device with an account; you still sign in to the NAS using a NAS user account.

Set up browser access with a SmartURL

QNAP’s browser tutorial was last modified 2022-08-02. Menu labels can differ by NAS firmware version; consult the current interface if a label has changed. QNAP documents the registration flow in its myQNAPcloud browser tutorial.

Set up mobile access with myQNAPcloud Link

QNAP’s mobile-app guide, last modified 2026-07-14, applies to supported NAS models running QTS 4.3.3 or later or QuTS hero h4.5.1 or later, and to QNAP mobile apps that support myQNAPcloud. Check QNAP’s mobile-app setup and troubleshooting guide for compatibility and current screens.

  1. Create a QNAP ID or sign in to the account that will own the registered device.
  2. Sign in to QTS or QuTS hero as an administrator and open App Center. Install myQNAPcloud if it is not already installed, then install myQNAPcloud Link.
  3. Open myQNAPcloud, sign in with the QNAP ID, and register a globally unique device name if prompted.
  4. Enable myQNAPcloud Link and choose an access mode suited to the people who need to connect. For personal NAS access, QNAP gives Private as an example.
  5. Confirm that Link status is Normal. The Overview page should show the QNAP ID, device name, and SmartURL.
  6. In a supported QNAP app, such as Qfile Pro, choose the myQNAPcloud connection option, sign in with the same QNAP ID, select the NAS, and authenticate with a NAS user account.

Choose who can find or access the NAS

For stand-alone devices, QNAP documents three access-control modes. Choose based on whether the NAS is for private use or intended to be shared; do not publish services simply because the option is available. QNAP explains these modes in its access-control documentation and security guidance.

Mode What it does When it may fit
Public Makes the device searchable and exposes published services on myQNAPcloud. When discoverability and published services are deliberately intended.
Private Removes the device from search and restricts website access to the owner. Personal NAS access limited to the owner.
Customized Limits visibility and access to the owner and invited users. Sharing with selected people rather than the public.

Understand Link, VPN, and direct access trade-offs

myQNAPcloud Link can route access through QNAP servers without exposing the NAS directly to the internet or requiring manual port forwarding. QNAP cautions that relay performance may slow at peak periods and recommends VPN when speed and connection security are priorities. See QNAP’s FAQ on myQNAPcloud Link.

Direct access through an FQDN or public IP may be faster for streaming, but it requires forwarding NAS service ports and exposes those services to internet attack. QNAP suggests using a router’s VPN service where possible; if unavailable, its alternative guidance describes forwarding the QVPN service port rather than the NAS system port. These options require more networking knowledge. QNAP outlines them in its alternative connection FAQ. Its sources provide no quantified throughput or latency comparison.

QNAP TS-264-8G-US 2 Bay Desktop NAS
  • Intel Quad-core CPU burst up to 2.9 GHz with 8GB RAM
  • Dual 2.5GbE (2.5G/1G/100M) ports accelerates file sharing across teams and devices or streamline large file transfers
  • Dual M.2 PCIe Gen3x2 NVMe SSD slots enable cache acceleration or SSD storage pools for improved performance
  • Multiple USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports (type-A) with up to 10Gb/s transfer speeds, allowing compatibility with newer, faster USB drives/expansion enclosures for transferring large media files
  • Centrally store and organize personal or family photos, music, and videos
  • Link: avoids manual port forwarding and direct NAS exposure, with possible relay slowdowns at peak times.
  • VPN: QNAP recommends it for improved speed and connection security; using it requires a VPN service and its configuration.
  • Direct FQDN or public-IP access: may suit streaming when speed matters, but requires router changes and exposes forwarded services.

Secure the remote connection

  • Use a restricted access mode and publish only services intended for sharing.
  • Limit who can access the SmartURL.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable 2-step verification.
  • Keep QTS or QuTS hero and NAS apps updated.

These precautions follow QNAP’s security guidance.
