Choose by what you need to recover
Backup tools can protect different things: personal files and settings, individual files you may need to retrieve later, or an entire Windows system. A system image is intended to support recovery of a broader system state; file-and-settings backup serves a narrower purpose. Before switching, decide which recovery outcome matters most, then check that the product and license support it.
- Files and settings: Consider Microsoft Windows Backup if you want a consumer-focused, built-in experience tied to a personal Microsoft account.
- A free, single-job backup: Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows Free may fit if one job and its destination options suit your setup.
- Dedicated backup and recovery software: Compare the current editions of Macrium Reflect X, paying attention to the features included in the license you can obtain.
These are fit-based choices, not a tested ranking: the official product and support pages describe capabilities, but do not establish a comparative performance winner.
What Ashampoo Backup Pro 27 offers as a baseline
Ashampoo says Backup Pro 27 can back up individual files and folders, drives, or a complete system. Its listed destinations include internal and external disks, USB storage, network drives and NAS, and cloud services. The product page also describes scheduled backups, selective file restoration, compression, AES encryption, and bootable recovery media. Use those capabilities as a checklist rather than assuming another product matches them. Confirm whole-system recovery, retrieval of a single file, support for your intended destination, the available recovery environment, and the current edition or license terms.

Macrium presents Reflect X as backup and recovery software for individual workstations and servers, and provides a comparison page covering editions and platform support. It is a sensible dedicated option to evaluate if you want more than consumer file-and-settings protection.

Before choosing it, use Macrium’s current matrix to verify the edition supports your Windows platform and the recovery functions you need. Do not assume that every capability is included in every license, or that the available information proves a direct match for Ashampoo Backup Pro.
Veeam Agent Free: useful if one job is enough
Veeam’s user guide says its Free edition allows one backup job. It can target a local drive, a network shared folder, or a Veeam backup repository. Veeam describes the product as protecting Windows desktops and laptops, with backup to an external drive, NAS share, or repository. The one-job restriction is central to whether the free edition fits: consider whether a single job covers the computers and backup tasks you intend to manage.

Microsoft Windows Backup: a consumer file-and-settings option
Microsoft describes Windows Backup as a built-in solution for consumer devices using a personal Microsoft account. Its guidance covers backing up files, themes, settings, and some installed apps and Wi-Fi information. That makes it worth considering when your goal is a straightforward way to protect consumer data and preferences—not as a proven substitute for full-system imaging.

Microsoft separately points to external or network drives for situations such as limited internet access or large volumes of files, and notes that legacy backup approaches can be less manageable. For local backups, an external hard drive for PC backup is one generic option; choose capacity and connection type for your needs rather than assuming one model is best. A backup is only useful if you can restore the data you need. Use this checklist while comparing products and licenses:

- Recovery scope: Does it cover only files and settings, or can it support recovery of a complete system?
- Single-file retrieval: Can you restore an individual file without restoring everything?
- Recovery environment: What recovery media or environment is available if Windows will not start?
- Destination: Does it support your intended external drive, network share or NAS, repository, or cloud destination?
- Edition and terms: Are the features you need included in the current edition and license you can obtain?
- Separation: Keep at least one backup copy separate from the computer being protected.
Try to understand the restore process before you depend on it. A destination being supported does not, by itself, establish that a particular recovery workflow will meet your needs.
