On Windows, its system-level app can filter websites and installed apps; on Android, check the app’s protection, ad-blocking, HTTPS-filtering, and filter settings; on iPhone and iPad, DNS protection is the main route for filtering beyond Safari, but iOS limits what can be blocked in other apps. DNS filtering blocks requests by domain, so no single setting will remove every ad.
Choose the right AdGuard filtering method
AdGuard can filter at different levels. Browser or app content filters can target page elements and requests more precisely. DNS filtering works earlier: a device asks a DNS server to resolve a domain, and a filtering server can withhold the address for a domain it blocks. This can stop some ad requests across browsers and apps, but it cannot reliably remove an ad served from the same domain or delivery path as the content you want.
| Platform | Useful starting point | Scope and important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | AdGuard for Windows: Ad blocking; optionally configure DNS Protection separately | System-level filtering can cover visited websites and installed apps. The Filtering log helps identify requests. |
| Android | Enable protection, Ad blocking, HTTPS filtering, and the AdGuard Base filter | Check browser filtering first; DNS is another option for domain-level filtering across apps. |
| iOS and iPadOS | Enable DNS protection and select AdGuard DNS | iOS has limited options for blocking ads outside Safari. DNS filtering is not a universal app-ad blocker. |
| Mac | Configure DNS filtering in AdGuard | DNS filters work at the domain level. Exact controls depend on the AdGuard app and browser. |
| Browser extension | Install and configure the extension for the browser you use | An extension filters that browser; it should not be expected to block ads in unrelated apps. |
AdGuard explains DNS filtering and its platform setup options at its DNS-filtering guide. Browser and app capabilities differ by platform and product, so use the method that matches where the ads appear.
Set up AdGuard on Windows
Enable website and app filtering
- Open AdGuard for Windows and go to Ad blocking.
- Turn on the protection and filtering options you want, and make sure the relevant filters are enabled.
- Visit a website or use an app where ads appear, then open the Filtering log to inspect the requests AdGuard sees.
- If a specific request should be blocked or allowed, use the log to identify it and create an appropriate custom rule.
AdGuard says its Windows Ad blocking module can block ads on visited websites and in installed apps. The Ad blocking documentation describes the module and log. DNS Protection is a separate module, with its own provider and DNS-filter choices; configure it only if you want domain-level filtering in addition to the app’s filtering controls. AdGuard’s DNS Protection instructions cover that module.

Use the log before writing rules
The Filtering log is the practical starting point when one site or app behaves differently from another. It shows requests you can investigate before adding a rule, reducing the chance that a broad custom rule blocks something necessary. If a site breaks after a rule or filter change, remove or narrow the rule, or allowlist the site in the relevant filtering layer.
Set up AdGuard on Android
Check the protection and browser-filter settings
- Open AdGuard and confirm its main protection switch is on.
- Open Protection → Ad blocking and make sure ad blocking is enabled.
- Open Settings → Filtering → Network → HTTPS filtering and check that HTTPS filtering is enabled if you are troubleshooting browser traffic.
- Open Settings → Filtering → Filters → Ad filters and confirm the AdGuard Base filter is active.
These are the checks in AdGuard’s Android browser troubleshooting guide. Menu names can vary by app version; if a label differs, look for the corresponding protection, network filtering, or ad-filter control in your current version.

Installing the Android app
AdGuard says its Android app is not published on Google Play and provides installation through listed alternative stores or direct APK installation. Follow AdGuard’s current installation instructions for the available method and device-specific prompts. On Samsung devices running One UI 6 (Android 14) or newer, the Auto Blocker security feature may interfere with APK installation. Do not disable a device security feature casually; use AdGuard’s instructions for your model and restore the setting afterward where those instructions advise it.
Set up AdGuard on iPhone and iPad
Try DNS protection for filtering beyond Safari
- Open the AdGuard app and enable DNS protection.
- Select AdGuard DNS as the DNS server.
- Test the app or service where ads were appearing. If it remains unfiltered, try the service’s browser version in Safari where available.
AdGuard’s support guidance says iOS offers limited ways to block ads outside Safari and recommends DNS protection with AdGuard DNS for in-app issues. See its iOS in-app ad troubleshooting instructions. DNS may block requests to known ad-serving domains, but it cannot guarantee removal when ads and wanted content use the same domain or delivery route.

Customize DNS filters only when needed
AdGuard’s iOS configuration article describes enabling Advanced mode before configuring DNS protection and DNS filters. Its navigation may change, so follow the current app labels and avoid low-level changes you do not understand. AdGuard also says its DNS filter includes multiple filter components; if you use AdGuard DNS or Family DNS, the same DNS filter is already built into those servers, so adding it again is redundant. See AdGuard’s DNS-filtering setup guidance for iOS.
Configure DNS filtering on Mac or other supported devices
AdGuard documents DNS-filter setup for Mac as well as Windows, Android, and iOS. Follow the platform-specific steps in its DNS filtering guide, choosing a DNS provider and filter appropriate to your setup. DNS filtering is useful when you want domain-level blocking beyond one browser, but it does not replace browser or app content filters for page-level control.

AdGuard’s browser assistance documentation describes browser-related features, while its extension overview covers extension behavior and userscripts. The right combination depends on the standalone app and browser; a browser extension alone does not filter unrelated apps.

Ads still appear in a browser
- Confirm the main protection switch is on.
- Confirm Ad blocking and the appropriate base filter are enabled.
- On Android, check HTTPS filtering when troubleshooting browser traffic.
- On Windows, inspect the Filtering log to see whether the request is being handled and decide whether a custom rule is warranted.
Ads still appear in an app
Check whether your platform supports app-level filtering. Windows AdGuard can filter installed apps; on iOS, options outside Safari are limited, and AdGuard recommends DNS protection as the first route to try. DNS can block requests to domains on the selected server’s block rules, but cannot guarantee that every in-app ad disappears.

A site or app stops working
- Identify whether the block comes from AdGuard’s app filters or from the selected DNS server.
- If the app filter is responsible, add the site or request to the appropriate app allowlist or adjust the rule.
- If the DNS server blocks the domain, an in-app exclusion may not override it. Adjust the DNS allowlist or select a non-filtering DNS server as appropriate.
- If the problem began after adding filters, remove unnecessary or overlapping lists and retest.
AdGuard explains how exclusions and DNS server behavior interact in its exclusions guidance. It also warns that inaccurate or excessive DNS filters can cause sites to malfunction; see the DNS-filtering guide.
Be cautious with advanced settings
AdGuard warns that inappropriate changes to advanced settings can impair performance, break the internet connection, or compromise privacy and security. Use the documented controls for your platform rather than changing low-level options without understanding their effect. Windows users can start with the documented filtering modules and log; iOS users can begin with DNS protection and the DNS server choice.
