Blur, pixelation, or a movable shape can make text look hidden without removing it. Also check the whole frame and the file’s metadata, and share only what the AI task actually needs.
Why blur or an overlay may not protect a screenshot
A screenshot can still contain information that is visually obscured. Google Search Central warns that text covered by an image and other visually concealed text may remain discoverable, including through OCR, and recommends removing the information completely from a file before publishing it. That guidance is about public files, but the practical lesson applies here: do not treat a visual effect as proof that the original pixels are gone. Google Search Central’s guidance on keeping redacted information out
Prefer an opaque, solid mask applied with a redaction-capable editor. Avoid relying on blur, pixelation, a low-contrast color, or an editable overlay as the only protection. The goal is to change the exported image content, not just cover the secret while the editor is open.
A safe workflow for preparing a screenshot
- Ask whether an image is needed. If the AI can help from a text description, use that instead. Otherwise, crop to the smallest region that shows the issue.
- Make a working copy. Identify direct secrets such as passwords, API keys, recovery codes, access tokens, and account numbers. Also look for indirect identifiers: names, email addresses, customer or case IDs, URLs, notifications, browser tabs, and surrounding details that reveal more than intended.
- Apply opaque redaction. Replace each sensitive region with a solid, nontransparent block using a redaction operation. Do not assume a blur or a shape layered on top has removed the underlying information.
- Export a separate, flattened image. Do not rely on a reversible layer in the editing project. Export behavior varies by editor and format; there is no single setting established for every app. The important check is that the exported image itself no longer contains the covered content.
- Reopen and inspect the exported file. View it at full size. Check that no secret is visible, selectable, or present beneath an editable overlay. Review the entire frame again, not just the blocks you added.
- Check metadata where applicable. Google’s public-file guidance also recommends checking document metadata. The relevant metadata and removal steps vary by app and format, so inspect the exported file using the tools available for your device.
- Share the minimum necessary image. Before uploading, review the specific AI service’s current terms and data controls for the account you are using.
What to check across the whole screenshot
Secrets are not limited to the password or token in the center of the screen. Scan the edges and background too: browser tabs, address bars, notification banners, account names, email addresses, support-ticket details, and other context can identify a person or expose a separate secret. Crop irrelevant areas where possible; redact anything that must remain in the image but should not be disclosed.
Metadata is a separate check from visible pixels. A clean-looking image does not establish that every potentially revealing property has been removed. Google recommends checking metadata when preparing a public file; apply that check as relevant to the image format and editor you use.

Manual versus automated image redaction
| Approach | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Manual opaque redaction | Occasional screenshots that a person can inspect carefully. | Accuracy depends on finding every relevant region, exporting the result, and checking the final file. |
| Automated image inspection and redaction | High-volume or organizational workflows, such as processing support uploads. | Detection depends on configured data types and is not a guarantee that every secret will be found. Human review remains important. |
Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection documents image inspection and redaction with opaque rectangles, including use in customer-support upload workflows. Its documentation describes a cloud implementation, not a requirement that an individual use a cloud service for one screenshot. See Google Cloud’s image-redaction concepts and instructions for redacting sensitive data in images.
Automated detection should be treated as assistance rather than a complete safety check. A detector can only act on the types of information it is configured to recognize, and the cited documentation does not promise that all secrets will be detected.

Do not confuse text redaction with screenshot redaction
OpenAI’s Privacy Filter announcement, dated April 22, 2026, describes an open-weight model for detecting and redacting personally identifiable information in text, including passwords and API keys. The announcement says it can miss uncommon identifiers and may over- or under-redact when context is limited, especially in short sequences. It describes a text model, not a tool for redacting screenshot images. OpenAI Privacy Filter announcement

Removing a secret reduces what the image discloses; it does not make every upload safe or authorized. Do not upload information that must remain confidential, and consider whether you have permission to share someone else’s private or sensitive information. OpenAI’s Usage Policies restrict certain unauthorized handling or distribution of others’ private or sensitive information.

Data handling also varies by service, product, and account. Check the current terms and available data controls for the exact AI service you plan to use rather than assuming one provider’s policy applies elsewhere. Microsoft’s cited Copilot privacy FAQ is explicitly for an older Copilot app; it should not be read as a current, universal retention statement for all Copilot products or account types.
