A safe production database migration depends on a rehearsed sequence: define success and recovery conditions, test the full process, verify that backups can be restored, account for engine-specific locks, deploy compatible application changes, and validate the target before routing traffic. The exact commands and deployment order depend on the database engine, versions, hosting platform, workload, and type of migration; there is no universal “database first” or “application first” rule.

1. Define the migration and its success conditions

First establish what is changing. A schema change on one database, a major-version upgrade, and a cross-environment or cross-platform migration have different risks and recovery paths.

  • Record the source and target database engines and exact versions, hosting arrangement, data volume, database objects, and application dependencies.
  • Identify which reads and writes must remain available, and whether the migration requires a maintenance window or a period when writes are paused.
  • Agree on target checks before the work begins: an object or schema inventory, suitable row counts or data reconciliation, application smoke tests, and essential performance and health signals.
  • Name the people authorized to extend the window, stop the migration, or choose rollback versus fixing forward. Set cutover checkpoints and a communication channel.

AWS recommends estimating rollback time and dry-running the activities with representative data volume; see AWS Prescriptive Guidance on migration phases.

2. Rehearse the complete sequence, including recovery

Run the migration in a non-production environment that approximates production data size, transaction rate, configuration, and dependencies. If exact parity is impractical, document the differences and how they could affect timing or behavior.

  1. Measure backup, restore, data synchronization, migration, validation, and traffic-routing time.
  2. Check that the sequence fits the planned window, or agree on a contingency before production work starts.
  3. Test the backup and restore procedure in a lower environment. AWS recommends this so teams can understand restore time before cutover.
  4. Exercise both the rollback and fail-forward paths. Record who makes the decision, the decision deadline and triggers, and how writes made after cutover will be handled.

A forward-only rehearsal does not establish that recovery is feasible within the business window. AWS also recommends documenting rollback time and dry-running the activities; see its cutover guidance.

3. Prepare and verify backups

Confirm that a recent backup exists and that its retention, access controls, and recovery point meet the organization’s recovery objectives. A successful backup job is not proof that the data can be restored in time: verify the restore path and measure its duration in rehearsal.

For a consistency-sensitive cutover, decide how writes will be controlled. AWS’s documented sequence is to freeze ingestion, take a backup, complete the final data synchronization, and then change routing. Keep the source available and avoid destructive cleanup until target validation and the rollback decision period are complete. See AWS’s migration-phase guidance.

4. Assess locks and long-running work for the actual database

Inspect the exact migration statements and the documentation for the engine and version in use. Determine whether each operation rewrites data, blocks readers or writers, or holds a lock until a transaction ends. Test under representative concurrency: a statement that completes quickly on an idle test database may wait behind production traffic or block other work.

PostgreSQL 18: explicit table locks

In PostgreSQL 18, an explicit LOCK TABLE waits for conflicting locks unless NOWAIT is specified. With NOWAIT, acquisition fails rather than waiting when a conflicting lock prevents it. After acquisition, the lock lasts until the transaction ends. Consult the PostgreSQL 18 LOCK documentation for the precise behavior.

PostgreSQL 18: limiting lock waits

PostgreSQL 18’s lock_timeout aborts a statement if an individual lock acquisition waits longer than the configured interval. The documentation cautions against setting it globally in postgresql.conf when the intention is to constrain only one session. Choose a session-level setting deliberately and rehearse it for the migration; see PostgreSQL 18 client connection defaults.

There is no generally safe lock duration or timeout for every engine, operation, and workload. Avoid long idle transactions, decide whether blockers should be waited on or terminated, and ensure an operator can observe active sessions and abort safely.

5. Deploy application and database changes in a compatible order

The order should follow compatibility, not a blanket rule. Identify which application versions may run while the old and new schemas coexist. Every intermediate schema should remain usable by the application version serving traffic at that stage, and the exact sequence should be rehearsed against the deployment system.

When a change cannot be completed atomically

A staged expansion-and-contraction approach can reduce compatibility risk: add structures that old code can tolerate, deploy code able to work with both representations, backfill and validate, switch reads or writes, then remove old structures after old application versions are gone. This is a general engineering pattern, not a universal procedure; confirm that it fits the engine, workload, and rollback plan.

When migrating with AWS DMS

Check which schema objects the selected AWS Database Migration Service workflow creates. AWS notes that some workflows do not automatically create every object, including secondary indexes and foreign keys. Include required objects and triggers in preparation and target validation. See AWS DMS best practices.

More broadly, account for application dependencies when planning migration waves: AWS treats the database as logically part of its application. See AWS Prescriptive Guidance.

6. Cut over and validate before declaring success

For a migration where write consistency matters, use the rehearsed consistency control—such as a write freeze—then take the final backup, finish synchronization, check the target, and only then route production traffic. AWS describes these as cutover phases in its migration guidance.

  1. Confirm the source is no longer accepting writes that would diverge from the target, or verify the alternative consistency mechanism.
  2. Complete final synchronization and confirm replication has caught up.
  3. Run the pre-agreed target checks. AWS DMS guidance recommends verifying replication with queries on the target before cutover; see AWS DMS best practices.
  4. Apply the planned routing change, such as the endpoint, DNS, load balancer, or application configuration change.
  5. Observe errors, latency, database health, replication state, and business-critical application flows against the agreed checkpoints.

AWS RDS blue/green is a platform-specific option

AWS describes RDS blue/green deployments as a way to maintain a synchronized staging environment for supported Amazon RDS engines. Its overview lists MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, with support conditions varying by engine, Region, and version. AWS says switchover downtime is typically under a minute but can be longer depending on workload; do not treat that as a guarantee for a particular deployment. Verify current support and rehearse the workload. See Amazon RDS blue/green deployments.

7. Make rollback safe for data written after cutover

Before cutover, define the decision owner, rollback triggers, deadline, and data-handling plan. AWS recommends predetermined rollback criteria and a strategy for data changed after cutover; see its cutover guidance.

If the target has received no new production writes, rollback may be as simple as restoring the previous routing. If writes have reached the target, the source may be stale. Do not redirect users to it until the new data has been reconciled, copied back, restored, or otherwise handled through a tested fail-forward or recovery design. Measure that recovery path and make sure it fits the business window.

Choosing a migration approach

No single approach is right for every migration. Compare the options against the constraints that determine operational risk:

Decision factor What to establish
Engine and versions Confirm compatibility between source, target, migration tooling, and application dependencies.
Type of change Distinguish a schema-only change from a major-version upgrade or a platform/data migration; their failure and recovery modes differ.
Availability needs Set acceptable downtime and write-freeze duration, then compare them with rehearsed timings.
Data and change volume Account for initial data size, ongoing write rate, synchronization lag, and validation workload.
Schema objects Identify indexes, foreign keys, triggers, and other required objects, and determine which the chosen workflow creates.
Rollback after target writes Determine how target-side writes will be reconciled if traffic must return to the source.
Operational fit Weigh complexity, team familiarity, and the ability to observe and recover the actual workload.
Managed-service availability Verify engine, version, and Region support. AWS DMS supports same-engine and cross-engine migrations; RDS blue/green is a narrower managed option with engine-specific conditions. See AWS DMS guidance and RDS blue/green documentation.
