First, check what happened at the reader: a terminal that does not react points to an NFC, phone-position, or terminal issue; a terminal that recognizes the tap and displays a decline points to the selected card, its Wallet status, or the card issuer. Work through the checks below in that order.

Did the reader detect your tap?

A missing response and a declined transaction are different problems. If the terminal did not react, start with the phone-to-reader connection. If it displayed a decline after recognizing the tap, check the card and contact the issuer if needed. Google says a declined transaction is not charged.

  • No response: check NFC, phone placement, and whether the terminal accepts mobile contactless payments.
  • Decline message: check the selected card and its Wallet status, then ask the card issuer about the transaction.

Check your phone and Wallet setup

  1. Turn on NFC. Open Android Settings and search for “NFC”; menu names vary by phone. Google Wallet Help explains that the message “Turn on NFC to pay with Wallet” means “Your phone either doesn’t support NFC or has it turned off.” See Google’s contactless troubleshooting steps.
  2. Make Google Wallet the default contactless payment app. Search Settings for contactless payments or NFC payment settings and select Google Wallet. The exact path varies by device. Google’s tap-to-pay setup guide covers the requirements.
  3. Check the card in Wallet. Open Google Wallet and look for messages such as “Card not set up” or a request to verify the card. Resolve the prompt before trying again. If Wallet says “Card suspended,” contact the bank. Google explains these card-status messages.
  4. Confirm which card is selected. The first card added becomes the default contactless card. To pay with another card, select it before tapping; Google’s default-payment instructions explain how.
  5. Check security requirements. Set a screen lock and unlock the phone before paying. Google Wallet also requires a device that meets its security requirements. Rooted devices cannot use Wallet contactless payments; custom ROMs, an unlocked bootloader, or uncertified software can also prevent it from working. Check Play Protect certification in the Play Store settings. If you modified the system software, Google advises restoring the original operating system and consulting the device manufacturer. See Google’s device compatibility guidance.

Retry the tap with the phone in the right position

Use a reader displaying a contactless or Google Pay symbol. Hold the phone close to it for a few seconds, then try a different position: the NFC antenna may be near the top or middle of the phone. Google’s contactless transaction troubleshooting guide recommends adjusting the position if the reader does not respond.

If the phone still gets no response, ask the cashier whether the terminal accepts mobile contactless payments. A reader may support contactless for some card networks but not others; Google gives Visa and Mastercard versus a particular Amex or Discover card as an example. Confirm the terminal’s support rather than assuming that a physical card’s tap feature means its Wallet version will work.

Check card and payment-terminal compatibility

Wallet card eligibility depends on the country, issuing bank, and card type. Use Google’s supported payment methods page, select the reader’s country, and check the exact bank and card. Banks decide which of their cards can be used with Google Wallet; a physical card’s contactless capability alone does not establish Wallet compatibility.

If the bank supports the card and Wallet shows it ready, contact the issuer about the declined transaction or account. If the issuer finds no issue, ask the retailer whether its terminal accepts mobile contactless payments and supports that card network.
