An online backup can be slow because it is uploading a large first-time dataset, sharing limited upload bandwidth, processing many files, or being interrupted when the computer sleeps. Check whether the client is actively uploading or still processing files before changing settings; then improve the network conditions and adjust service-specific controls carefully.

Why online backup can take so long

The first backup has much more to send

A first backup usually has to transfer the entire selected dataset. Backblaze says its first backup may take substantial time for this reason; later runs should generally be quicker because they send new or changed files rather than everything again. Backblaze’s backup and restoration time frames describe this distinction.

Your upload capacity is only one part of the route

An internet plan’s headline speed may describe download capacity, not the upload capacity available to the backup. Other devices and applications can also use the upstream connection. Wi-Fi quality, latency, network distance to the provider, server proximity, and computer performance can affect the result. Microsoft lists these factors for large OneDrive transfers, while Backblaze describes similar service-specific influences on its backup speeds. See Microsoft’s guidance on upload and download speed and Backblaze’s slow-backup guidance.

File processing can look like a stalled upload

Some clients must discover, inspect, or prepare files before transferring them. A status such as OneDrive’s “Processing changes” may last longer after adding many files or a very large file; that status does not necessarily mean the network is the bottleneck. Microsoft’s OneDrive processing-changes guidance explains this behavior.

Sleep, schedules, and disconnected drives interrupt progress

Microsoft says uploads and downloads stop when a computer sleeps, and Backblaze recommends leaving the computer awake during an initial backup. If files come from an external drive, it must remain connected for the backup client to access them. Scheduled backups or an inactive computer can therefore make elapsed time much longer than the hours the client has actually been working.

Find out what is limiting the backup

  1. Read the client status. Check whether it reports active upload, scanning, indexing, processing changes, a pause, or an error. If it is processing files, allow that phase to finish before assuming upload speed is the problem.
  2. Check the upload path. Run a reputable internet speed test and note the upload result. Backblaze also provides a speed test aimed at its data centers; a provider-specific test may reveal route performance that a generic test does not. Neither result guarantees the speed your backup will sustain. Backblaze explains its test and other factors in its slow-backup help article.
  3. Look for competing traffic. Pause or postpone large uploads, cloud sync, video calls, remote desktop sessions, or other upstream-heavy activity where practical. Other devices on the same connection can compete too.
  4. Check power and source drives. Keep a laptop connected to power and prevent it from sleeping during the transfer. Confirm that any external drive included in the backup is attached and accessible.
  5. For OneDrive, rule out a blocker. Check available account storage, permissions, connection status, and any upload error or file restriction. Microsoft identifies these as reasons an upload may fail or be blocked, rather than simply run slowly. Consult its OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations page for the applicable client and account.

Ways to speed up an online backup safely

Let the initial run complete without interruption

Keep the computer awake, use a stable connection, and let the first transfer continue. Repeatedly stopping it can delay completion. Backblaze’s Computer Backup Best Practices says its initial backup should finish within 30 days and advises contacting support if its estimate is longer. That is Backblaze’s service-specific expectation, not a universal deadline for other providers or datasets.

Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is the weak link

Microsoft recommends a wired connection for large transfers. Ethernet can help when the wireless connection or local Wi-Fi environment is limiting performance, but it cannot raise the upload capacity of the internet service or resolve every routing or provider-side constraint. A compatible port or adapter and a router Ethernet port are required.

Reduce other uploads and try a quieter time

Pause nonessential uploads while the backup runs. If the connection is shared or congestion varies by time of day, try leaving the backup to run during a quieter period. This frees capacity when other traffic is the bottleneck; it will not make the provider process files faster.

Choose bandwidth controls that fit your connection

OneDrive offers a fixed upload rate or “Adjust automatically.” A fixed limit can keep the backup from consuming too much of a shared connection, but a low cap makes completion take longer. Microsoft’s guidance says automatic adjustment lets OneDrive use unused bandwidth in the background; for a temporarily slow connection, it suggests pausing sync rather than setting a restrictive limit. Work or school administrators may manage or hide these settings. See Microsoft’s OneDrive bandwidth-control instructions.

Backblaze users can disable automatic throttling and increase manual throttle or thread settings to use more bandwidth, according to its slow-backup guidance. Increase settings gradually and monitor other applications: too many threads can saturate a connection and cause timeouts or other network problems. There is no universal best thread count.

Use the desktop client for large OneDrive uploads

For OneDrive, Microsoft recommends the desktop app rather than the website upload button when transferring large files or many files. Its guidance documents file sizes up to 250 GB in current popular browsers and the OneDrive app in applicable contexts, but older browsers and some work or school situations have different limits. Check the current restrictions for your account and client instead of treating that figure as universal. See Microsoft’s OneDrive upload instructions.

Keep removable backup sources connected

If the backup includes an external drive, leave it connected while the client scans and uploads its contents. Backblaze identifies disconnected external drives and rescanning as factors that can delay backup progress. This is relevant to clients backing up removable sources, not a general way to increase network throughput.

When many files are the issue

Large item counts can increase scanning and synchronization work even when the total data size is modest. For OneDrive and SharePoint, Microsoft says performance issues can occur above 300,000 synced items in the documented scenario and recommends no more than that for optimum performance. A separate Windows preview supporting one million items has its own hardware and software requirements. These are OneDrive-specific figures, not limits for every backup service. Check Microsoft’s current item and performance restrictions before changing how files are organized.

Keep cloud speed separate from backup resilience

Adding a local external-drive copy can give you another recovery option, but it does not accelerate the upload to cloud storage. Backblaze recommends a local external drive in addition to off-site backup in its backup best practices. Treat that as a resilience choice, not a speed fix.
