Ryoku has two update paths: ryoku update updates Ryoku’s own packages and desktop configuration, while sudo pacman -Syu performs a full upgrade of the underlying Arch system, including the kernel. Use pacman’s full-upgrade workflow when installing repository software; do not refresh package databases alone and install a package against an otherwise un-upgraded system.
Choose the update command for the layer you want to update

Ryoku documents these as distinct scopes: its own update command is not a substitute for upgrading the Arch base system. The project’s current instructions are in the Ryoku README.
Update Ryoku packages and desktop configuration
Run this command in a terminal:
ryoku updateRyoku’s current README describes a snapshot before the package update and a paired snapshot afterward. The command updates packages by name from the signed [ryoku] repository, then refreshes desktop configuration in your home directory and reloads the shell. It also reports how many system packages are pending. If the package update fails, the README says the remaining update actions are aborted.
Upgrade the Arch system and kernel
To update the underlying Arch system, including base packages and the kernel, run:

sudo pacman -SyuPacman synchronizes repository databases and upgrades installed packages as a full system transaction. Ryoku also documents ryoku update --system when you want to run the Ryoku and system updates together. See Ryoku’s update instructions for the project-specific behavior.
Install software from configured repositories safely
To install a repository package by name, include the full upgrade flags with the package name:

sudo pacman -Syu package_nameReplace package_name with the package’s actual repository name. This refreshes package databases, upgrades the system, and installs the requested package in one transaction. Use the package search or repository information available on your system to confirm the exact name before installing.
Avoid sudo pacman -Sy package_name as an install shortcut. It refreshes databases and installs the requested package without upgrading the rest of the system, which can leave installed packages and newer repository libraries out of sync. Arch’s system maintenance guidance explains that partial upgrades are unsupported. If a database refresh has already succeeded but the full upgrade fails, fix the upgrade problem and complete the full upgrade before doing further package operations.

Consider AUR or Flatpak when a repository package is unavailable
Ryoku’s FAQ lists pacman, the AUR, and Flatpak as software installation routes; the project’s CLI documentation says ryoku orchestrates pacman, yay, and snapper. These routes are not interchangeable: availability and maintenance depend on the particular application and its source. Check the package identity and source before choosing a route, especially for AUR packages, whose selection and upkeep are separate from installing a package in a configured pacman repository. Consult Ryoku’s FAQ and project documentation for its available options.

- Run
ryoku rollback. - Restart the computer and select a previous snapshot from the Limine boot menu.
