Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallMost next/image failures come down to one of four things: the image URL does not match an allowlist, the source needs authentication, the deployment is a static export without an image optimizer, or the component lacks sizing information. Start with the exact src passed at runtime, then apply the smallest fix for that case.
Identify which image failure you have
Inspect the exact value reaching the Image component—not just the value you expect from a CMS or environment variable. Classify it as a local path, a remote URL, an authenticated URL, or an image used in a static export. The error message and deployment mode usually point to the relevant configuration.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| “Un-configured Host” | A remote URL component does not match images.remotePatterns. |
Protocol, hostname, port, pathname, and query-string policy. Subdomains and development ports must match too. Next.js host error guidance. |
| “Un-configured localPatterns” | The local path or its query string is not allowed. | Whether the actual pathname falls within the configured pattern and whether a query string is present. Next.js localPatterns error guidance. |
| Remote source works in a browser but fails through optimization | The image requires authentication headers, which the default optimizer does not forward. | Whether the source requires a login, cookie, or authorization header. Next.js Image documentation. |
| Image optimization API error during static export | The default optimizer runs on demand, but exported static output does not include that API. | Whether the deployment uses static export rather than a Next.js server. Next.js export image API guidance. |
Invalid images config |
The configuration shape or option value is unsupported. | Check the installed Next.js version and the accepted configuration for it. Next.js invalid images configuration guidance. |
| Image shifts or appears at the wrong size | Dimensions or layout sizing are missing or misunderstood. | Set remote width and height, or use fill inside a sized parent. Next.js Image documentation. |
Fix a remote image host or path mismatch
Next.js checks remote image sources against images.remotePatterns. A match can depend on protocol, hostname, port, pathname, and search parameters; matching is exact and case-sensitive. For example, allowing https://example.com/** does not allow https://assets.example.com/photos/a.jpg: the hostname differs. A pattern requiring an empty search string also rejects a URL that has a query string.
Use a narrow pattern that matches the real source. This example allows HTTPS images under one host and directory, with no query string:

If sources use a fixed query string, configure that exact string. If they use varying query strings, omit search from the object pattern only when allowing any query is acceptable. A URL object built from a URL without a query string has an empty search value, so it can unintentionally disallow query-bearing image URLs. The host error documentation explains the matching behavior.
Keep the allowlist as specific as the source structure permits. In patterns, * matches one hostname or pathname segment; ** matches multiple segments only at the beginning of a hostname or the end of a pathname. It does not work in the middle. Broad wildcards can allow sources you did not intend to optimize. The Image API reference.

Allow local image paths when localPatterns is configured
If your project restricts local sources with images.localPatterns, the path must fit a configured pathname pattern, and the query-string rule must fit too. A pattern for /assets/images/** covers files nested below that directory; a narrower pattern may not. Setting search: '' allows no query string, so it rejects a local image URL that includes one.
For example, a local pattern for /assets/images/** with an empty search restriction is appropriate only if images are served from that path and do not carry query parameters. Adjust the path and search behavior to match the actual local source rather than opening access more broadly. Next.js localPatterns error guidance.

Handle authenticated image sources safely
The default Image Optimization API does not forward headers when it fetches the source image. A browser session or authorization header therefore should not be expected to reach a protected image host through the default optimizer. Next.js documents this behavior for security reasons.
Possible approaches depend on how the image is delivered:

- Use
unoptimizedfor an image that the browser can retrieve directly under the application’s authentication design. This serves the original source without Next.js changing its quality, size, or format. - Provide a delivery route or image service that can authenticate to the source safely, then configure an appropriate loader or provider.
- Reconsider whether a protected source should be exposed to the browser at all; do not make a private image public merely to silence an optimizer error.
Do not put secrets in a client-visible image URL or configuration. The right solution depends on whether direct browser access is authorized and whether you still need optimized responsive variants.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose an image approach for static export
The built-in Image Optimization API generates optimized images on demand. A static export does not provide that API, so the default loader cannot perform its normal optimization there. The documented options are to serve the application with next start or another compatible server deployment, use an optimization-capable provider, configure a custom loader, or disable optimization with unoptimized. | Approach | Fits when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Run a Next.js server | Your deployment can provide the on-demand Image Optimization API. | You are no longer serving only static exported files. |
| Use a custom loader or image provider | You want image transformations from a service that can deliver them for the deployment. | You must configure and operate the integration; suitability and cost depend on the provider and your application. |
Set unoptimized |
The original source can be served as-is and built-in optimization is not required. | The original image is served without Next.js changing its quality, size, or format. |
Next.js documents loader integrations and examples for services including Cloudinary, Cloudflare, Imgix, and ImageKit. That list describes available integration patterns, not a ranking or recommendation. Next.js image configuration documentation.
Fix sizing and layout separately from source authorization
A source that passes the allowlist can still render incorrectly. Next.js cannot inspect a remote file during the build to infer its dimensions, so remote images need width and height, or the fill layout inside a parent with defined sizing. The dimensions establish the aspect ratio and help prevent layout shift; CSS still controls the rendered size. Next.js Image component documentation.
Check version compatibility and image format
Use configuration supported by the Next.js version installed in the project. The host error guidance documents object-form remotePatterns for versions before 15.3.0 and the older domains option for versions before 12.3.0; it marks domains deprecated since Next.js 14. The current Image API documents remotePatterns and localPatterns. If Next.js reports a schema error, consult the documentation for that installed version instead of copying a newer option blindly. Host error version notes and invalid configuration guidance.
SVG files are not optimized by default. When the SVG is known and suitable, unoptimized is a simpler option. Enabling SVG optimization has security implications; if you do so, configure protective response headers and understand the risks. Avoid enabling dangerouslyAllowLocalIP for ordinary use: it can expose internal network content through optimization requests. Next.js Image documentation.
Quick Recap
Use the smallest safe fix
- Log or inspect the actual
srcvalue and identify whether it is local, remote, authenticated, or used in a static export. - For an allowlist error, compare the source against every relevant URL component: protocol, hostname, port, path, and query string. Change only the pattern that is too narrow.
- For a protected source, decide whether direct unoptimized delivery is appropriate or whether a trusted route/provider should handle authentication.
- For static export, choose a server optimizer, a compatible external loader/provider, or unoptimized source delivery.
- For layout problems, add remote dimensions or use
fillwith a sized parent; this does not fix a host allowlist or deployment error. - Check your installed Next.js version if an otherwise valid-looking option produces an invalid configuration error.
