For a Lambda function that streams Amazon Bedrock output to a client, configure two separate streams: Bedrock’s model-to-Lambda event stream and Lambda’s response stream to the client. Set the function timeout from measured end-to-end duration with room for variability, tune memory using representative workloads, and enable RESPONSE_STREAM when clients need early chunks or a response may exceed Lambda’s 6 MB buffered limit. There is no universally correct timeout or memory setting; the model, prompt, output size, application work, and client deadline determine them.

How the two streaming settings fit together

Bedrock streaming gets model events into your Lambda handler. Lambda response streaming gets handler output to the client before the function has finished. Enabling one does not automatically enable the other: your selected Bedrock model and API must support streaming, and your Lambda invocation path must support streamed responses.

The request also has multiple independent deadlines. Lambda’s timeout governs the function invocation and its work; it does not extend a Bedrock model’s processing limit or the client’s own deadline. Design for the earliest relevant limit and handle failures at each layer.

Choose a Lambda timeout from the full request path

AWS documents a 3-second default Lambda timeout, configurable from 1 to 900 seconds in one-second increments for standard functions. The 900-second maximum is a ceiling, not a recommended setting. AWS cautions that a timeout close to a function’s average duration increases the risk of unexpected timeouts; data transfer, downstream latency, and computational complexity can all vary. See AWS Lambda timeout configuration.

Measure the complete function duration under realistic conditions: initialization, the Bedrock request, time spent consuming and transforming chunks, and delivery of the response. Test representative upper-bound input sizes and generation parameters, then compare observed durations with your Lambda timeout and the client or gateway deadline. Leave headroom for variability rather than choosing a value from the average alone. Because no workload measurements exist for your function, no particular timeout can be recommended here.

Bedrock can emit a model timeout event if processing exceeds its model timeout length. That is distinct from Lambda timing out. Log and handle Bedrock stream errors separately from Lambda invocation failures so the client receives an intelligible outcome and you can identify which layer ended the request. See InvokeModelWithResponseStream.

Tune memory against real workloads

Lambda memory is configurable from 128 MB to 10,240 MB in 1 MB increments, and CPU allocation rises with memory. AWS documents that 1,769 MB corresponds to the equivalent of one vCPU and describes memory as the principal performance control. Its guidance recommends 128 MB only for simple functions. Check the current Lambda memory configuration documentation.

Use observed memory consumption and function duration to compare candidate settings with representative prompts and outputs. More memory can help if chunk parsing, serialization, libraries, or networking are constraining the handler. If most of the function’s elapsed time is waiting for Bedrock to generate output, increasing Lambda memory may not materially reduce model latency. These are workload-dependent engineering considerations, not benchmark results for a particular function.

Choose buffered or streamed responses to the client

For a Lambda function URL, the default response mode is BUFFERED: the client receives the invocation response when it is complete, with a maximum buffered synchronous response of 6 MB. RESPONSE_STREAM uses Lambda’s InvokeWithResponseStream API so response chunks can become available as the function produces them; the streamed synchronous response limit is 200 MB. AWS documents uncapped bandwidth for the first 6 MB of a streamed response and a 2 MB/s cap for the remainder. See the FunctionUrlConfig API reference, Lambda quotas, and Lambda response streaming documentation.

Consideration BUFFERED RESPONSE_STREAM
When the client receives output After the complete response is available In chunks as the function produces them
Maximum synchronous response 6 MB 200 MB
Response bandwidth Not stated for this comparison in the cited Lambda documentation Uncapped for the first 6 MB; 2 MB/s thereafter
Handler response data May require retaining the complete response before returning it Can avoid holding the complete response in memory

Streaming is useful when the application needs a lower time to first byte or when output may exceed the buffered limit. It does not make the full transfer unlimited or instant: the documented bandwidth cap applies after the first 6 MB.

Check the invocation path, Region, and network placement

Lambda response streaming is not supported in every Region. AWS documents function URLs and the InvokeWithResponseStream API, as well as API Gateway proxy integration using that API. Confirm that the exact route and Region you deploy support the mode.

Function URLs do not support response streaming from within a VPC. For a function in a VPC, AWS documents using the SDK with the streaming invocation API and the required Lambda interface VPC endpoint. Verify the endpoint and invocation permissions as part of deployment.

Account for clients that disconnect

A client disconnect does not itself interrupt a Lambda streamed invocation, and AWS bills for the full function duration. If clients may leave before generation completes, decide whether application logic should stop work early and set timeout and cost expectations for execution that may continue after the connection closes.

Select the Bedrock streaming API your application needs

Use InvokeModelWithResponseStream for model-specific requests

InvokeModelWithResponseStream returns inference output as a stream, with a request body specific to the model. Check whether the chosen model supports streaming using GetFoundationModel and its responseStreamingSupported field. The AWS CLI does not support Bedrock streaming operations, so use an SDK or API client that supports event streams. Details are in the API reference and AWS’s inference API guidance.

Use ConverseStream for the message-based interface

ConverseStream provides a consistent message-based API across Bedrock models that support messages, while still allowing model-specific inference fields. It requires the bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream permission. Choose between it and the model-specific API based on your application’s request shape and the interface the model supports; do not assume that all models expose identical parameters. See the ConverseStream API reference.

Choose Bedrock streaming guardrail behavior

Bedrock offers synchronous and asynchronous guardrail processing for streaming responses. Synchronous processing buffers one or more chunks for policy checks before sending them, adding latency but allowing screening before delivery. Asynchronous processing sends chunks as they become available while checks continue in the background. As a result, inappropriate material may reach the client before a finding blocks later chunks. AWS also states that asynchronous mode does not support masking sensitive information. See Configure streaming response behavior to filter content.

  • Choose synchronous processing when screening before delivery or masking sensitive information is required.
  • Consider asynchronous processing only when lower chunk latency is worth the documented risk that content can arrive before detection.

Validate the configuration before deployment

  1. Confirm model capability: check responseStreamingSupported through GetFoundationModel, then choose InvokeModelWithResponseStream or ConverseStream according to the supported interface.
  2. Confirm Lambda response compatibility: verify the Region, invocation API or integration, VPC arrangement, and permissions for streamed responses.
  3. Measure realistic requests: exercise representative prompt sizes, output lengths, and inference parameters; record Lambda duration and memory use.
  4. Set independent deadlines: compare measured full-path duration with Lambda timeout, the Bedrock model timeout, and the client or gateway deadline.
  5. Choose response and guardrail modes: weigh first-byte latency, response size, bandwidth, content screening, and whether sensitive-information masking is needed.
  6. Test failure behavior: verify how the client and logs distinguish Bedrock stream errors, Lambda timeouts, and client disconnects.
