Choose Redis when its vector search, filtering, capacity, and operating model fit your workload—especially if Redis is already part of your stack. Evaluate a dedicated vector database when its deployment, scaling, or retrieval features are a better match. There is no evidence-based universal winner: test both against your own data and requirements.
What “Redis vs. a vector database” really means
Redis is a general-purpose data platform with vector search documented as part of Redis Search. It can store vectors alongside application records and metadata in hashes or JSON, then retrieve similar vectors with KNN or range queries and metadata filters. That makes Redis a candidate for the vector-retrieval part of AI application memory; it does not mean every Redis deployment is automatically configured or sized for that job. Redis vector search documentation
A dedicated vector database is a separate retrieval service whose deployment and operating model may suit a particular workload better. “Separate” describes an architectural choice, not a requirement for RAG or agent memory. Your application still needs to create and maintain embeddings, define what to retrieve, and use retrieved context appropriately, regardless of which store holds the vectors.
When Redis is a good fit
- Your application already operates Redis, and keeping application data, metadata, and vector retrieval in one platform would simplify integration.
- Your query patterns fit Redis’s supported KNN or vector-radius search, distance metrics, and metadata filtering.
- Your measured recall, latency, capacity, and availability targets are achievable with the index type and deployment you plan to run.
- You can manage the Redis version, hardware, scaling, and operational responsibilities involved—or use an offering that provides the operating model you need.
Redis describes an AI-agent memory-layer pattern that includes short-term session memory and longer-term semantic or episodic memory. That is a Redis-authored use-case description, not independent evidence that Redis is the best choice for every agent architecture. Redis guide to managing memory for AI agents

When to evaluate a dedicated vector database
Consider a separate service if its deployment and scaling options, retrieval and filtering behavior, or operational ownership better match your application. For example, a team may prefer a managed service rather than operating its own retrieval layer, or may need query behavior that it has not established Redis can meet. Those are reasons to compare options, not proof that a dedicated product will be faster or cheaper.
A Redis-authored guide characterizes Pinecone as managed, Weaviate as open source with hybrid search, Qdrant as offering performance and advanced filtering, Chroma as lightweight and developer-friendly, and pgvector as a familiar option for PostgreSQL teams. Choose the Redis index type by accuracy and workload
Redis documents three vector index types—FLAT, HNSW, and, starting with Redis 8.2, SVS-VAMANA. They differ in search approach and trade-offs; the index label alone cannot tell you which will meet your application’s targets.
| Index | What Redis documents | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| FLAT | Exact search. Redis documentation recommends considering it for datasets under 1 million vectors or when perfect accuracy matters more than latency. | Search work grows linearly with dataset size. The under-1-million figure is Redis’s guidance, not a universal cutoff. |
| HNSW | Approximate graph-based search. Redis recommends considering it for larger datasets (over 1 million documents) or when performance and scalability outweigh perfect accuracy. | Accuracy and latency can be tuned, with memory and build-time trade-offs. Redis documentation says HNSW typically achieves 95–99% recall; that is a vendor-documentation claim, not an independent benchmark or guarantee for your workload. |
| SVS-VAMANA | Graph-based search documented as added in Redis 8.2, with compression options intended to reduce memory use. | Confirm that your actual Redis version and hardware support the configuration you intend to use. |
Redis’s HNSW documentation lists defaults of M=16, EF_CONSTRUCTION=200, and EF_RUNTIME=10. These parameters affect behavior: increasing M can improve accuracy while increasing memory use and build time; increasing EF_CONSTRUCTION increases build time; increasing EF_RUNTIME can improve accuracy at the cost of latency. Tune and benchmark them with your data rather than treating defaults as an application-specific recommendation. Redis vector search concepts RedisVL search and indexing

Check filters, distance metrics, and cluster behavior
Redis documents L2, inner product, and cosine distance, along with KNN and range queries. A smaller distance indicates closer vectors in the documented formulation. Select the metric to match the embedding and retrieval design you are using; compare relevance, not just raw distance. Redis vector search concepts
Metadata filtering can narrow results, including by applying a filter expression before KNN. In Redis Cluster, SHARD_K_RATIO controls how many candidates each shard returns relative to the requested top-k; Redis documents it as a cluster-only tuning option that trades accuracy against performance. Test selective and broad filters as separate cases, since one result may not represent the other. Redis vector search query documentation

Run a representative comparison before committing
Compare Redis and any dedicated service using the same embedding model, corpus, vector dimensions, filters, top-k, and query mix. Include the write and update patterns the application will actually use. A useful evaluation measures:
- Retrieval quality: recall against exact search and relevance for the application’s real questions.
- Latency and throughput: p50, p95, and p99 latency under expected concurrency, plus behavior as load or corpus size changes.
- Filtering and retrieval behavior: results across realistic filter selectivity, tenant boundaries, and any hybrid-search needs.
- Ingestion and updates: time and behavior for initial loading, ongoing writes, and changes to existing records.
- Resource footprint: memory, storage, index overhead, metadata overhead, and the effect of any compression.
- Operations and resilience: deployment ownership, scaling, synchronization with source data, failure behavior, and recovery requirements.
- Total cost at expected utilization: account for ingestion, storage, replicas, provisioned capacity, usage charges, and idle resources using current provider pricing.
Pinecone’s comparison page discusses differences in deployment, scaling, and billing across products, but it is vendor-authored framing; check current terms and prices directly with providers. It does not establish which option is cheapest for your workload. Pinecone comparison page

A practical decision rule
- Start with the architecture you already operate. If you use Redis or PostgreSQL, include Redis or pgvector as an option rather than assuming a new service is required.
- Write down the retrieval contract. Specify vector count and growth, dimensions, write rate, query concurrency, top-k, filters, recall target, and latency objectives.
- Eliminate options that cannot meet hard requirements. Verify current version and feature support, deployment constraints, and required filtering or hybrid behavior.
- Benchmark the remaining candidates consistently. Compare quality, tail latency, update behavior, resource use, operations, and cost under representative conditions.
- Choose the simplest option that meets the measured requirements. Revisit the decision if the corpus, traffic, or operational constraints change materially.
Redis is a credible integrated vector-search choice, not a substitute that is automatically right for every workload. A dedicated vector database is likewise an option to validate, not a default requirement. Let the application’s measured retrieval and operating needs decide.
