Reddit can deactivate an account after prolonged inactivity, but its current User Agreement does not say how long that period is or promise that logging in or posting on a set schedule will keep an account active. To protect access, keep your recovery email and authentication method available, and use Reddit’s official recovery steps if you are locked out. Reddit still documents Old Reddit for some account-management tasks, but that is not a guarantee the legacy interface will remain available indefinitely.
How long can you leave a Reddit account inactive?
Reddit’s User Agreement, effective March 31, 2026, says: “If you stop using the Services without deleting your Account, your Account may be deactivated due to prolonged inactivity.” The provision does not define “prolonged,” give a countdown or notice period, or specify exceptions. Read Reddit’s User Agreement.
Because Reddit publishes no threshold in that provision, there is no supported basis for saying that logging in once a month, posting, or commenting on a particular cadence guarantees an account will stay active. Sign in when you want to use Reddit and keep your recovery options current; treat that as sensible account maintenance, not a policy guarantee.
Keep your account recoverable
Reddit lists email, password, and two-factor authentication among account settings. A verified email and two-factor authentication help secure an account and support access recovery, but they are not stated to prevent inactivity deactivation. Make sure you can still use the email address and second-factor method associated with your account. Reddit says its desktop web experience is often the easiest place to find account information. See Reddit’s account-information guidance.

If you cannot sign in
Reddit distinguishes a security lock from an account ban: a locked account needs a password reset, while bans relate to rule violations. If you see a lock or account-status notice, follow the official recovery or appeal route rather than assuming inactivity caused the problem. Check Reddit’s account status overview.
What to expect from Old Reddit
Reddit’s current account-deletion instructions include an “On Old Reddit” route, and a separate troubleshooting article recommends trying Old Reddit when deletion on reddit.com errors. These are documented paths for particular account-management tasks—not a commitment to maintain old.reddit.com, every legacy feature, or access to Old Reddit indefinitely. See the deletion instructions and deletion troubleshooting.
Keep your credentials and recovery methods usable rather than treating Old Reddit as a backup for your account. If a control is missing in the legacy interface, try the current reddit.com settings or the official mobile-app instructions linked from Reddit’s account-information guidance.
Inactivity deactivation is different from deletion or a lock
- Inactivity deactivation: Reddit says an account may be deactivated after prolonged inactivity, without specifying a period in the cited User Agreement provision.
- Account deletion: This is a separate action you request. Reddit says deletion cannot be reversed; you lose access to the account and its history, and the username becomes unavailable. Reddit explains what happens to usernames, posts, and comments.
- Security lock or ban: A lock calls for a password reset; a ban is related to rule violations. Use the account-status guidance to identify the relevant route.
Before requesting account deletion
Deleting an account does not automatically remove its posts or comments. Reddit says they remain but are disassociated from the deleted account, so delete any content you want removed before deleting the account. Reddit’s deletion process begins within 90 days to remove or anonymize the account from its servers; that is a deletion-process timeframe, not an inactivity threshold. Review Reddit’s account-deletion steps.
