The GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO D uses Socket sTR5 and supports AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000, Threadripper PRO 7000-WX, Threadripper 9000, and Threadripper PRO 9000-WX processors. Exact model support depends on the motherboard revision and BIOS: for revision 1.1, GIGABYTE says BIOS FA1 added support for the 9000 families. Confirm your board’s revision and check its CPU support list before buying.

Which CPUs are compatible with the TRX50 AERO D?

GIGABYTE lists four supported processor families for the TRX50 AERO D: Ryzen Threadripper 7000, Threadripper PRO 7000-WX, Threadripper 9000, and Threadripper PRO 9000-WX. The board is built around Socket sTR5 and the TRX50 chipset; it is not a motherboard for mainstream AM5 Ryzen desktop processors. Family-level compatibility is only a starting point: check the manufacturer’s CPU support table for your exact processor model and the required BIOS version.

GIGABYTE’s specification directs buyers to “Go to GIGABYTE’s website for the latest CPU support list.” Use the page for the revision printed on your board, rather than assuming that support is identical across revisions. See the TRX50 AERO D Rev. 1.1 specifications and its support and BIOS history; if your board is a different revision, select its corresponding support page.

How to confirm CPU and BIOS compatibility

  1. Identify the motherboard revision. Read the revision marking on the physical board, then open the GIGABYTE support page for that exact revision.
  2. Find your exact CPU model in the CPU support list. Confirm that it is listed and note any minimum BIOS version. Do not infer exact model support solely from a family name in the general specification.
  3. Compare the installed BIOS with the listed requirement. If the BIOS is older, determine whether it must be updated before installing the processor and follow GIGABYTE’s instructions for your board.
  4. For revision 1.1 and a Threadripper 9000-series CPU, verify BIOS FA1 or later as appropriate. GIGABYTE lists BIOS FA1, dated May 20, 2025, as adding support for Ryzen Threadripper 9000 and Threadripper PRO 9000-WX on revision 1.1. Check the support page for any later revisions and the exact CPU entry before proceeding.

Choose a CPU for the work you actually run

There is no universally best supported processor for this board. Choose by the applications and tasks that dominate your workload, and compare independent benchmarks for the software versions you use. A model with more cores is useful only when your work can use them; purchase cost and the rest of the platform also matter.

AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 7960X 24-Core, 48-Thread Processor
  • 24 Cores and 48 Processing Threads for Professional Processing Power
  • Incredible 5.3 GHz Max Boost Frequency, with a huge 152MB Cache
  • Unlocked, with automatic overclocking feature
  • Quad-Channel DDR5 RDIMM support up to 1TB, and 80 usable PCIe lanes for serious bandwidth and I/O
  • 350W TDP, Cooler Not Included
  • Rendering and simulation: Check how well your specific renderer or simulation software scales across cores, and whether the jobs you run are CPU-bound.
  • Compilation: Look for benchmarks using your build tools and representative project sizes. Build settings and the ability to run multiple jobs affect how much extra core capacity helps.
  • Virtualization: Consider the number and type of virtual machines you run alongside their CPU, memory-capacity, and memory-bandwidth needs.
  • Mixed workstation use: Weigh performance in the applications that matter most rather than selecting by a single headline core count.

Compare the exact CPU models listed for your revision against credible application-specific tests. Also include the cost and requirements of compatible cooling and memory in the complete build; the available specifications do not establish a particular model as a performance or value winner.

Account for memory and expansion before stepping up a CPU tier

The TRX50 AERO D has four DDR5 DIMM slots in a quad-channel configuration and supports ECC registered RDIMM and RDIMM-3DS memory. GIGABYTE notes that supported memory type, speed, and module count can vary with the processor and memory configuration. Check the board’s current memory support list for the exact CPU and memory kit you plan to use instead of assuming a listed speed applies to every configuration.

AMD Ryzen™ Threadripper™ 7970X 32-Core, 64-Thread Processor
  • 32 Cores and 64 Processing Threads for Powerful, Professional Processing Power
  • Incredible 5.3 GHz Max Boost Frequency, with a huge 160MB Cache
  • Unlocked, with automatic overclocking feature
  • Quad-Channel DDR5 RDIMM support up to 1TB, and 80 usable PCIe lanes for serious bandwidth and I/O
  • 350W TDP, Cooler Not Included

TRX50’s platform limits may matter more than the choice among CPUs supported by this motherboard. AMD describes TRX50 as providing four-channel memory and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes. Its comparison lists WRX90 at eight-channel memory and up to 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes; WRX90 is listed for PRO processor families. If your design depends on the greater memory bandwidth or PCIe expansion figures, compare motherboard platforms before buying a top-tier CPU. A more capable processor on TRX50 does not change the board’s platform limits. See AMD’s Threadripper workstation platform information.

For cards, GIGABYTE specifies PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 as CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x16 slots for supported Threadripper families, while PCIEX16_3 is PCIe 4.0 x16. The specification says to install a single graphics card in PCIEX16_1. Check the board’s slot details against the number and generation of devices in your build.
