Start with a small, weighed batch and compare Arabica-heavy ratios such as 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30. Brew each the same way, taste them side by side, and adjust the Robusta share to suit your cup. There is no proven best ratio for every bean or brewing method.

Choose a starting ratio

Measure the beans by weight so you can repeat a blend you like. For a 20 g trial dose, these examples show how much of each roasted coffee to use:

Arabica/Robusta ratio Arabica Robusta
90/10 18 g 2 g
80/20 16 g 4 g
70/30 14 g 6 g

These are practical comparison points, not established universal recipes. A 2022 study prepared blends containing 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5%, 10%, 20%, and 35% Robusta by weight to investigate blend identification—not to determine which proportions people prefer. The study also cites earlier literature reporting that Robusta additions above 35% may have a palpable aroma effect; that is not a guaranteed threshold for every coffee. The study explains its blend series and purpose.

Make a fair home comparison

  1. Pick two labeled roasted coffees. Use Arabica and Robusta beans that are clearly identified. For a first comparison, similar roast levels can make the species ratio easier to assess, though that does not mean matching roasts will always taste best.
  2. Weigh each small blend. Use one of the 20 g examples above, or scale the weights to your usual dose. A digital scale helps with repeatability, but the essential point is measuring consistently.
  3. Keep the brew constant. Prepare each blend with the same coffee dose, grind setting, water, equipment, and method. Change the proportion—not several variables at once.
  4. Taste and take notes. Compare aroma, bitterness, body, sweetness, and, if relevant, how clearly the coffee comes through in milk.
  5. Adjust gradually. If the Robusta character overwhelms the cup for your taste, reduce its share. If you want to explore a fuller espresso, test a slightly higher share against the same recipe.

The 2022 study’s blend series paired Ethiopian Arabica with Indian Robusta; its pure samples also included coffees from Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, and Uganda. Those specific samples cannot predict every coffee sold under either species label. Origin and the individual beans matter too.

Adapt the blend to your brewing method

Espresso and moka

A modest Robusta share is a reasonable trial if you want to explore more body or crema. Lavazza’s consumer guide suggests 10–30% Robusta for espresso and associates it with body and crema. That is company guidance for espresso, not independent proof or a ratio that applies to every coffee. Read Lavazza’s Arabica and Robusta guide.

Milk drinks

Judge the blend in the drink you actually make: a ratio that tastes balanced as straight espresso may not remain as noticeable after milk is added. Try your usual milk amount with each test cup.

Filter, French press, and cold brew

Do not assume an espresso ratio will work equally well in these methods. Lavazza recommends Arabica-focused choices for filter and cold brew, and cautions that darker Robusta may taste bitter or astringent in cold brew. Treat these as vendor recommendations to test against your own beans and recipe, not universal rules.

Why the same ratio can taste different

Species alone does not guarantee a particular level of bitterness, acidity, or aroma. Roast changes coffee’s chemical composition, and the effects vary across organic acids and between species. An interview published by the Specialty Coffee Association discusses these interactions based on a meta-analysis; it does not support a simple rule that Robusta is always more bitter or Arabica always more acidic. See the Specialty Coffee Association’s discussion of coffee acidity and roasting.

Make and keep a preferred blend

Once you find a ratio you enjoy, combine a modest quantity of the whole beans and store it in an airtight container away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep the ratio recorded so you can recreate it with the same coffees. If you change either coffee or its roast, taste the blend again rather than assuming the old proportions will behave identically.
