At 100 steps per minute, that’s about 2,000 steps. The U.S. Physical Activity Guidelines use 1,000 steps in 10 minutes as an example, which scales to 2,000 in 20 minutes—but it is an illustration, not a guaranteed average for indoor walkers.
How to estimate your steps in 20 minutes
Use this calculation:
Steps in 20 minutes = your steps per minute × 20
For a personal estimate, count your steps during a 10-minute walk and double the result. For example, if you count 850 steps in 10 minutes, you would estimate about 1,700 steps in 20 minutes at the same pace. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services describes measuring a 10-minute walk with a pedometer or fitness tracker, but you can count steps yourself during a timed interval. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition (2018) gives 1,000 steps in 10 minutes as a worked example—not a population average.
Is 2,000 steps in 20 minutes realistic?
Yes, if you average about 100 steps per minute: 100 × 20 = 2,000. That is a useful arithmetic estimate, not a promise that every walker will reach the same total. Your cadence can vary with fitness, gait, age, and walking pace, and the same rate may feel easier for one person than another.
A 2018 review by Tudor-Locke and colleagues describes more than 100 steps per minute as a practical heuristic associated with moderate-intensity walking for ostensibly healthy adults. It is not an individualized prescription or a required target. The review’s descriptive adult cadence bands are:

These bands provide context, not rigid categories for every individual. See the peer-reviewed review, “How fast is fast enough? Walking cadence (steps/min) as a practical estimate of intensity in adults: a narrative review” (2018).
Does walking indoors change the estimate?
Duration and your cadence determine the calculation; the cited sources do not establish a special average for a 20-minute indoor walk. Rather than assume an indoor-specific total, use your own measured steps per minute. A walk around a room, hallway, or on a treadmill may feel different, but the estimate still comes from the number of steps you take in the time you walk.

Do you need a tracker to count steps?
No. A pedometer or fitness tracker can make counting more convenient, but a timed count works too. The American Heart Association notes that walking requires no special equipment and recommends supportive shoes. Its walking guidance also suggests starting with a comfortable stroll and gradually increasing time or distance. The American Heart Association’s walking guidance advises slowing down if talking or catching your breath becomes difficult.

Set a time goal first, then use your own step count to understand what that walk looks like for you. The federal guidelines note that step rates differ: a person with lower fitness may take fewer steps per minute than a fitter adult during the same walking time. If a faster pace makes it difficult to talk or catch your breath, slow down. Short walks can contribute to activity across the week; you do not need to force a particular step total in one session.
