You can reduce a chat widget’s impact by keeping it off the critical path: load it after important page content, follow the provider’s script-dependency rules, or show a lightweight placeholder that loads the full widget when someone asks to chat. None of these methods makes the widget cost-free. Check the actual page afterward, and make sure delayed loading still meets your support needs.
Why chat widgets can affect page performance
A chat embed is third-party code. Depending on the service and page, it can add network requests, JavaScript dependencies, execution work, and unpredictable behavior. Downloading the script is only part of its cost: the browser may also need time to execute it, and it can compete with other work even if it does not block HTML parsing.
There is no universally fastest widget or guaranteed Core Web Vitals improvement from a particular loading technique. The impact depends on the provider, its features, the page, and when the code runs.
Choose a loading method that fits your support needs
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
Place the provider snippet after key page content, commonly near the end of body if the provider permits it. |
You want a straightforward installation and chat available without putting its code ahead of important content. | The script still uses bandwidth and main-thread time. Placement alone does not guarantee there will be no performance effect. |
Use defer or async according to the script’s dependencies and the provider’s instructions. |
The script can load without blocking HTML parsing. | async has no guaranteed execution order; a script may run as soon as it downloads. defer runs after parsing and preserves document order, but may not suit every widget. |
| Load the widget after critical content or at a later point in the page lifecycle. | Initial rendering and responsiveness matter more than having chat ready immediately. | Chat becomes available later, and the script can still affect performance after it loads. |
| Use a facade: show a small stand-in, then load the real widget after a click or other interaction. | Chat is useful to some visitors but does not need to be ready before they request it. | The stand-in does not provide the full widget’s features. Badges or proactive features may not appear before the real widget loads. |
| Use a vendor setting for delayed connection, if the product supports one. | The vendor’s behavior and your support workflow suit a delayed connection. | Tracking, proactive features, APIs, or time to chat readiness may change. |
Add the widget without putting it ahead of important content
- Decide which pages need chat. Remove unused third-party scripts and avoid installing the widget on pages where it has no clear purpose. Deferring a script does not eliminate its cost.
- Keep key first-party content first. Follow the provider’s installation instructions. Zendesk recommends placing its Web Widget (Classic) snippet at the end of
bodyrather than inheadwhen page-load performance is a concern. Its instructions also say that code calling the Web Widget’szEAPI must come after the snippet. See Zendesk’s Web Widget (Classic) performance guidance. - Preserve script dependencies.
asyncdownloads in the background and runs when ready, with no guaranteed order. It is appropriate only for independent scripts.deferruns after parsing and preserves document order, which can suit code that relies on the DOM or ordered scripts. Confirm the chat provider supports the attribute and setup you choose. Shopify’s guidance on defer and async for non-critical scripts specifically suggests considering interaction-triggered loading for features such as chat widgets. - Consider loading on interaction. Chrome’s Lighthouse guidance describes a facade pattern: render a lightweight stand-in, optionally preconnect on hover, and replace it with the third-party widget on click. Its examples include live chat. A facade delays the real widget—and therefore features that depend on it—until interaction. See Lighthouse’s guidance on third-party facades and web.dev’s facade examples.
- Measure the real page. Inspect third-party requests and costly script evaluation with Chrome DevTools, PageSpeed Insights, or WebPageTest. Compare representative conditions before and after the change, then confirm that visitors can still open chat quickly enough for your support workflow. web.dev’s guidance on third-party JavaScript recommends evaluating third-party impact and suggests A/B testing when weighing a script’s value against its performance cost.
Zendesk Web Widget (Classic): a delayed-connection example
This example applies specifically to Zendesk Web Widget (Classic), not automatically to other Zendesk products or chat providers. Zendesk says the Classic widget normally connects to live-chat services on page load when its snippet is embedded and Chat is enabled. Its connectOnPageLoad JavaScript API can defer the Chat connection until a visitor interacts with the widget. Zendesk says this can reduce assets needed before the widget becomes interactive, but notes that opening it may then take one to two seconds.

Delayed connection also changes what the site can do before a visitor interacts: Zendesk says visitor monitoring is limited to visitors who initiate chat or click the widget, and proactive triggers, conversion tracking, and some APIs may be affected. Check the current product documentation and your account’s behavior before relying on this setting; the guidance is for Web Widget (Classic). The setup and trade-offs are described in Zendesk’s performance instructions.
