Verify the campaign through channels you find independently, not through the message that promoted it. Do not pay cryptocurrency to claim a prize or disclose a private key or seed phrase. These checks can uncover warning signs, but they cannot certify that a campaign, token, or wallet interaction is safe.
Verify the campaign without using its message link
- Do not click the link or scan the QR code. Instead, search for the project or organization independently and locate its website and social accounts. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that crypto fraud often starts on social media and advises consumers to find a provider’s site and contact route independently. - Look for the exact campaign on those official channels. Compare the announcement, dates, eligibility rules, and claim instructions with the message you received. If the organization does not acknowledge the offer, stop and contact it using details found separately—not the message’s contact information.
- Search for complaints and check the claims. Search the organization and campaign name alongside terms such as “scam,” “review,” and “complaint.” Check whether the domain’s age and claimed business details fit the organization’s story. These checks can surface inconsistencies, but a clean search or a registered business does not prove the offer is genuine. The CFTC cautions that registration alone does not protect against fraud; see its impostor guidance.
- Evaluate what the campaign asks you to do. Treat guaranteed returns, pressure to act immediately, unsolicited “free crypto,” and requests to send crypto in exchange for more as serious warning signs. A copied logo, polished website, celebrity endorsement, or claimed registration is not proof of legitimacy. The FTC describes common cryptocurrency investment-scam tactics in its cryptocurrency scam alert.
- Stop if it asks for money or wallet secrets. Do not pay a fee or tax in crypto to unlock a reward, and never share a private key or seed phrase. Do not provide financial-account details to claim a prize. The FTC says never to send money or pay with cryptocurrency to claim a prize in its prize-scam guidance; the CFTC says it would never ask for private keys or seed phrases in its impostor guidance.
The CFTC’s advice is direct: “Do thoroughly check out people or firms before you trade.” Its general fraud guidance is available at Digital Asset Frauds.
Know what the checks can—and cannot—tell you
No single check establishes that a campaign is legitimate. A campaign might be absent from an official account because of a fake or newly created account, while an apparent official announcement can itself be impersonated or compromised. Search results, domain details, business registration, and branding are clues to weigh together, not guarantees.
These steps are general U.S.-focused consumer guidance, not a certification process for crypto airdrops. Whether a campaign is lawful can depend on its structure and the jurisdictions involved; the cited agencies do not determine the status of a particular campaign. Nor does this checklist establish whether connecting a wallet to a specific site or interacting with a particular token is technically safe. If you cannot independently confirm the offer and understand what a wallet interaction will authorize, do not proceed.

If you already clicked, shared information, or paid
- Stop communicating with the sender. Do not pay additional fees or provide more account or wallet information.
- Report a suspected prize scam through the FTC’s official prize-scam guidance. Use the appropriate official regulator or law-enforcement reporting route for your location and circumstances.
- Be wary of anyone who contacts you offering to recover lost crypto for a fee. The CFTC says it does not charge fees to investigate complaints or offer paid recovery of lost funds; see its impostor guidance.
