Set an AI agent’s permissions in the integration, tool server, API gateway, or policy service—not in its prompt. Give it only the devices and actions required for its task, keep status access separate from device control, and add an approval step or withhold access for sensitive operations such as unlocking a door or changing an alarm. Then review the smart-home platform’s own app and household-member access; those controls may be broader than an agent-specific permission setting.

What to decide before connecting an agent

Write down what the agent is meant to do, which devices it needs, and which operations it may perform. A status assistant may need only read access. A scheduled lighting assistant may need permission to change selected lights during a defined task, not general access to every device in the home. These are design examples, not capabilities guaranteed by any particular platform.

  • Devices: list the specific device identifiers or, if necessary, the narrowest available device category.
  • Operations: distinguish reading status from changing settings, and name permitted actions rather than granting a generic “control home” capability.
  • Person and task: identify who initiated the task and what the current grant allows. Ask for renewed authorization if the agent changes task, target, or access level.
  • Duration: prefer a task-scoped, revocable credential with a limited lifetime over a persistent shared credential.

Use deny-by-default permissions: an operation or device that is not explicitly allowed should be rejected. Do not grant account administration, member management, or unrestricted control simply because the integration offers those tools.

Enforce permissions outside the model

A prompt can tell an agent what it is supposed to do, but it cannot reliably enforce authorization. OWASP advises against implementing authorization in generative-AI instructions because they can be manipulated or produce incorrect behavior. Put the actual check in a tool server, API gateway, or separate policy service that evaluates every request.

For each tool call, check the initiating user, agent identity, requested operation, target device, and active task grant. Reject calls that fall outside the allowlist, even if the model requests them. Validate arguments and confirm that the requested device belongs to the authorized home. Keep the policy decision separate from the agent’s execution so the agent cannot grant itself additional scope.

Prefer specific tools and explicit allowlists

Expose narrow functions such as read_temperature and set_thermostat_target instead of one broad tool that can control the whole home. Maintain an allowlist of device identifiers and operation names for the task. This makes it easier to grant reading without writing, and to deny a particular action without disabling unrelated functions.

Use short-lived, reviewable grants

Where the integration supports it, issue credentials limited to the task and its duration. Log authorization decisions, review the effective permissions after deployment for scope creep, and revoke the grant when the task, user, or integration is no longer needed. OWASP’s AI agent security guidance recommends minimum necessary tools; its AI security guidance also discusses narrowly scoped, short-lived tokens and isolating policy decisions from agent execution.

Put extra safeguards around sensitive actions

Actions involving locks, cameras, alarms, or account and security settings can affect physical safety or privacy. Leave these tools unavailable unless the use case genuinely requires them. If they are required, use a separate authorization path—for example, a confirmation or step-up approval before execution—and record the decision. This is a risk-based safeguard, not a claim that every smart-home platform requires confirmation for every lock command.

Google identifies locks as sensitive devices with additional requirements for third-party apps requesting access. OWASP likewise recommends explicit authorization for sensitive operations. The exact controls depend on the integration; do not assume a platform’s general linked-app permission is equivalent to per-command approval.

Review the smart-home platform’s own access controls

Agent permissions and platform permissions are separate layers. A smart-home app may let you approve a linked service’s access to a home or device types, but it may not let you define an agent-specific rule for every operation. Review both layers, and remove integrations and household accounts that are no longer needed.

Google Home: check a linked app’s access

Google Home managers can grant or revoke a linked third-party app’s access to home data, members, and selected device types. Review the app’s privacy practices and whether the requested device types fit its purpose. Google gives lock access for a vacation-rental app, but not a movie-streaming app, as an example of how context matters. See Google’s guide to third-party services and Google Home access.

Google Home: review members and their access

Google Home distinguishes Admins from Members. Admins can manage members and home settings. For Members, Settings access relates to device controls and settings, while Activity access relates to device and home activity history. Give Admin status only to trusted co-managers, and leave Settings or Activity access off when a Member does not need it. See Google’s instructions for managing people and permissions in a home.

Google Home: unlink a service you no longer use

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Choose Add → Link app or service → Works with Google.
  3. Select the linked service and choose Unlink account.

Google’s documented unlink flow removes all devices from that service; it does not unlink just one individual device. Check the current labels in the app, since menus can change. See Google’s linked-service access instructions.

Include guests and physical access in the review

API scopes are not the whole threat model. Google warns that guests with physical access may be able to interact with devices—for example, adjust a thermostat, see video on a display, or use microphone and camera buttons. Consider who can enter the home and use the devices, as well as which software identities can call them. See Google’s guidance on home members and guests.

Use network controls as a supporting layer

A VLAN or firewall rule can isolate smart-home devices from unrelated systems, reducing the network paths available if a device is compromised. NIST’s guidance on Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) describes limiting an IoT device’s network communications to what it needs for its intended function. Check that the router and devices support the controls you plan to use. Network containment does not decide whether a particular AI agent may issue a particular command; keep command authorization in the integration or policy layer. See NIST SP 1800-15, published May 26, 2021.

Compare permission designs before choosing an integration

When evaluating an integration or permission setup, look beyond whether it can connect. These differences determine how tightly access can be limited and how easily it can be reviewed or withdrawn.

What to compare Narrower, safer design Broader or weaker design
Scope granularity Individual devices, named operations, and separate read and write access Whole-home access or a generic control function
Enforcement location Tool server, API, gateway, or policy service checks every request Prompt instructions are the only stated restriction
Identity binding Agent and task grant are tied to the initiating user or session A shared integration credential is used without a clear user or task boundary
Credential lifetime Short-lived, revocable task credential Persistent credential with no clear expiry or review
Sensitive operations Unavailable unless needed, or protected by additional authorization Same unrestricted call path as routine status checks
Audit and revocation Visible authorization records and a clear way to revoke access Opaque, persistent grants with no obvious review process
Network containment IoT devices isolated or limited to necessary communications where supported Flat network with no device communication restrictions

These are design criteria, not a claim that a particular platform exposes every control. The Google Home steps above are specific to Google Home; do not assume the same menus or unlinking behavior in Alexa, Apple Home, Home Assistant, or another ecosystem.
