Your surgeon’s instructions determine when and how to put on or remove your faja after liposuction. There is no single safe sequence for every garment: bandages, incisions, drains, and the treated area can change what you need to do. If your clinic did not demonstrate the process, call and ask for instructions before handling the garment.
What to know before handling your faja
A faja is a compression garment. Your surgical team may provide one after liposuction to help manage swelling, sometimes with bandages or dressings underneath. Your surgeon decides which garment to use, how long to wear it, and when it can be removed. MedlinePlus puts it plainly: “Follow your surgeon’s instructions on how long it needs to be worn.” MedlinePlus liposuction aftercare also describes postoperative bandages and a compression garment.
General patient information describes wear as “a few weeks” at Mayo Clinic and “several weeks” at Cleveland Clinic, but neither phrase is an individual prescription. Your own schedule depends on your procedure and recovery. Do not use a general timeline to decide when to take the garment off.
How to put on your faja
Follow the method your clinic showed you and the written instructions for your specific garment. The sources do not establish a universal maneuver sequence that is safe for all fajas and postoperative dressings. In particular, do not pull, roll, or stretch the garment across incisions, drains, or tender areas unless your care team has told you how to do so.

- Use the clinic’s demonstrated method. If you were not shown how to position or fasten this garment, contact the surgeon’s office for a demonstration or clarification rather than guessing.
- Check how it feels and fits. Do not force a garment that does not fit or substitute a tighter one on your own. Contact your surgical team if it feels too tight or uncomfortable, or swelling prevents it from fitting.
Cleveland Clinic cautions that compression garments should not cut off circulation. Memorial Sloan Kettering also advises contacting the team about a too-tight or uncomfortable wrap or a garment that no longer fits because of swelling, but its detailed protocol is for advanced-stage lymphedema—not a general cosmetic-liposuction protocol. How to take off your faja
Remove it only when your surgeon’s instructions allow it and for a purpose your team has approved. The permitted timing and dressing sequence can depend on your incisions, bandages, or drains; there is no safe universal instruction to remove it at a particular point in recovery.

- Check the instructions first. Follow the clinic’s guidance on whether the garment may come off, and whether bandages should stay in place or be changed.
- Follow the clinic’s handling directions. Do not pull the garment over a drain, dressing, incision, or painful area unless your team has shown you how.
- Put it back on as directed. Use the schedule your surgeon gave you; do not decide on your own to leave it off longer or wear it more tightly.

- When you may first remove the garment and how often it may come off.
- Whether dressings stay under the garment, when they should be removed, and who should change them.
- Whether and when you may shower, and how to handle the garment during bathing.
- How long you should wear it and what to do if it becomes uncomfortable or stops fitting.

Do not force a poorly fitting garment or choose a tighter replacement without your surgeon’s approval. If a replacement is needed, ask the surgical team to approve the style and fit for your treated area and to confirm it works with any dressings or drains. A retail garment should not be assumed equivalent to the one provided or prescribed by your clinic.
