To clean a front-load washer’s detergent drawer, remove it using the release method in your washer’s manual, wash its removable parts in warm water, and wipe the drawer recess. To clean the door gasket, gently clear debris from its folds, wipe it with a cleaner approved for your model, and dry it thoroughly. Drawer releases and safe cleaning solutions vary, so follow the manual rather than forcing a part or treating one brand’s formula as universal.
What to gather and check first
- Your washer’s manual, to confirm how the drawer releases and which cleaners are allowed on the gasket.
- A soft cloth and, for drawer residue, an optional soft-bristled brush.
- A dry towel for removing moisture after cleaning.
Do not use abrasive pads or harsh cleaners; Samsung warns that these may damage washer finishes. LG’s US guidance also warns against using straight bleach on the gasket because it can deteriorate over time. Never mix bleach and vinegar.
Clean the detergent drawer
- Remove the drawer according to the manual. Pull it out and use the release mechanism specified for your model. Tabs, compartments, and inserts differ. Remove inserts only if the manual says they are detachable, and do not force a drawer that sticks.
- Wash the drawer and approved removable parts. LG’s US dispenser guidance, dated May 2026, recommends warm water and a soft-bristled brush to loosen residue. Rinse the parts; LG says not to put tray components in a dishwasher.
- Wipe the drawer recess. Use a damp cloth or soft brush on accessible residue, taking care not to damage delicate tabs.
- Dry and reinstall. Let the drawer parts dry before reassembling and reinstalling them.
Clean the door gasket
- Inspect the folds. Open the door and check the gasket, especially its lower folds, for lint, hair, detergent residue, and moisture. Remove visible debris gently.
- Wipe under the lip without straining it. Pull the gasket edge back only as far as it moves easily. Wipe the outer surface and accessible underside with a soft cloth and a cleaning solution allowed by your washer’s manual.
- Use only your model’s approved solution. Cleaning directions differ even among a manufacturer’s pages. For example, LG’s US maintenance guidance dated May 29, 2026, permits either 3/4 cup of bleach diluted in 1 gallon of warm water or vinegar instead, and says not to use straight bleach or combine bleach and vinegar. A separate LG gasket guide dated October 29, 2025, specifies 5 g of oxygen bleach in 5 L of warm water. These are different, model-specific manufacturer directions—not formulas to combine or assume are safe for every washer. If your manual does not allow a solution, do not use it.
- Dry the gasket. Wipe away moisture with a clean, dry towel.
Let the washer air out and set a cleaning rhythm
When practical, leave the door and detergent drawer open after use so moisture can evaporate. Samsung Canada’s guide, last updated July 2, 2026, recommends leaving both open after every wash and wiping the door and gasket area weekly. Keep children safe around an open washer.
There is no single schedule shared by all manufacturers. LG’s July 9, 2025 guidance recommends cleaning the dispenser weekly and the gasket monthly; its May 29, 2026 guidance describes approximately monthly maintenance and at least monthly dispenser cleaning. Samsung Canada recommends weekly gasket-area wiping and drawer cleaning every 1–3 months. Treat these as manufacturer examples and use the interval in your own manual.

When hand-cleaning is not enough
Cleaning the gasket and drawer is different from running a Tub Clean cycle, which addresses the tub and internal residue. LG recommends using its Tub Clean cycle with a suitable store-bought tub cleaner as a separate maintenance task; that cleaner is not needed to hand-clean the gasket or drawer.
If the gasket is torn or otherwise damaged, cleaning will not repair it. LG says damaged gasket material may require service. Follow the manufacturer’s service guidance rather than scrubbing or trying to restore the damaged area.
