Multiple AI agents can control the same smart-home devices when each is deliberately connected and authorized through a shared control layer, or when compatible smart-home platforms share a device using Matter multi-admin. Neither method gives every agent automatic access: you must configure connections, permissions and compatible hardware.
Two ways to give multiple agents access
First decide whether the agents will use one hub or whether separate smart-home platforms need to control the same device. These are different arrangements: Home Assistant can provide a shared interface for connected AI clients, while Matter multi-admin adds compatible platform controllers to a Matter device.
| Approach | What is shared | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Home Assistant LLM or MCP interface | Access to a configured Home Assistant API | Multiple AI clients that can authenticate to the same Home Assistant instance |
| Matter multi-admin (also called multi-fabric) | A compatible Matter device is joined to more than one platform controller | Separate platforms, such as Google Home and Home Assistant, both need to control the device |
Use Home Assistant as a shared control layer
Home Assistant documents an API through which an LLM can fetch data or control Home Assistant. Its MCP server exposes a selected LLM API to compatible clients at /api/mcp; a particular API can be addressed at /api/mcp/<api_id>, including /api/mcp/assist. Each client still needs a supported, configured connection and an authentication token. This is not automatic access for any agent that discovers the hub. See Home Assistant’s LLM API documentation.
Know what the built-in Assist API can do
The Assist API is limited to the intents and entities available to Home Assistant’s built-in conversation agent. It cannot perform administrative tasks. Other integrations can contribute tools to an LLM API, so capabilities depend on the API selected and the integrations configured.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Authenticate each client appropriately
Home Assistant documents OAuth and long-lived access tokens as authentication options, depending on what the client supports. APIs other than Assist require the authenticated user to be an administrator, according to the LLM API documentation. Treat each AI client as a separately configured connection, and check which API it uses and what the associated account can do.
Share a Matter device between platforms
Matter multi-admin lets a compatible device be controlled from more than one certified smart-home platform. For example, a user can share a device from one platform and complete setup in another; after it is added, both platforms can control it. Home Assistant calls this arrangement multi-fabric. Its Matter guide describes sharing devices between Home Assistant and platforms such as Google Home or Apple Home. Read Home Assistant’s Matter guide and Google’s Matter setup guidance.

Check for a compatible hub on each platform
Google says each Matter-certified app that will control a device needs its own compatible Matter hub. The hub may be a smart speaker, smart display or another supported device. Confirm the current supported-hub list for each platform, the specific device’s Matter support, and any Thread requirements if the device uses Thread. A hub on one platform does not, by itself, establish that another platform can control the device.
Limit what each agent or platform can control
Sharing access should not mean granting every connection the same authority. Home Assistant permissions can distinguish read, control and edit access, with policies set at entity, device, area or domain level. Permissions are attached to groups; a user’s group policies combine, and the owner always has access to everything. See Home Assistant’s permissions documentation.

- Decide which entities each connection needs to see and control.
- Grant only the needed permission level; reading sensor data does not necessarily require permission to control devices or edit configuration.
- Review the account and token used by each client, especially if it needs an administrator-level API.
- For Matter, review household membership and device-sharing settings in each participating platform; those controls are platform-specific.
Home Assistant’s permission model can help scope access, but do not assume every external AI client maps to a distinct Home Assistant user or independently applies those permissions. Verify how the client authenticates and how Home Assistant evaluates that connection.

Native integrations may expose more features
Matter can provide basic controls without exposing every feature available through a product’s native integration. Home Assistant’s documentation gives Hue as an example: Matter provides basic light control, while the native integration exposes additional scenes and entertainment functionality. Bridges also vary in which device types and features they expose; a bridge does not necessarily make every device in its ecosystem available. Check the documented capabilities for the exact device and integration before choosing the sharing route.

Local control is not a blanket privacy guarantee
Google explains that Matter commands issued at home travel locally over Wi-Fi or Thread. When commands come from away, the cloud reaches the home hub, which then communicates locally with the device. That describes the platform’s device-control path; it does not establish that an AI agent or its service handles data locally or provides a particular privacy guarantee.

- List the agents, platforms and devices. Identify whether the agents can connect to one Home Assistant instance or whether different certified smart-home platforms need to control the same Matter device.
- For one Home Assistant instance, check client compatibility. Confirm that each AI client supports the required Home Assistant connection and authentication method, then select the LLM API whose tools and exposed entities fit the task.
- For separate platforms, verify Matter support. Check the device’s Matter compatibility and confirm that every platform has a currently supported Matter hub; account for Thread requirements where relevant.
- Set permissions and sharing. Limit Home Assistant access to the entities and actions each connection needs, or complete the device-sharing flow in the participating Matter platforms.
- Test actual capabilities. Check that each agent can read or control only what intended, and confirm whether product-specific features are available through the chosen integration or Matter path.
When Matter or a shared hub is not enough
If a device lacks Matter support, a platform lacks a compatible hub, or the chosen Matter path omits a feature you need, that route may not meet the requirement. A native integration may expose richer functionality, but its availability and control model depend on the product and platform. Home Assistant cautions that Matter is not always the best choice when a native integration provides more features.

Amazon’s Alexa Ambient Home Dev Kit also describes a developer API for Multi-Admin Simple Setup, intended to add an app or service as an additional Matter administrator. That is developer-facing setup capability, not a requirement for ordinary consumer Matter sharing. See Amazon’s Ambient Home Dev Kit announcement.
