You can enforce rubyfmt locally and in CI with pre-commit, but the exact rubyfmt hook ID, revision, command, supported file types, and check-versus-format behavior must first be confirmed in rubyfmt’s maintained documentation. The available sources do not establish those details, so a copy-and-paste rubyfmt hook would risk being wrong. The dependable approach is to verify the formatter interface, configure one pre-commit check, and run that same configuration in CI.
What to verify before configuring rubyfmt
Homebrew Formulae lists brew install rubyfmt and links the package to fables-tales/rubyfmt. Its listing showed version 0.14.1 at search time; package listings can lag upstream releases, so check the project’s current documentation before relying on a version-specific command or behavior.
Do not assume a hook repository, revision, hook ID, file filter, or command. Those rubyfmt-specific details are not established by the available sources. Check the maintained rubyfmt README and hook metadata for:
- Whether rubyfmt provides a maintained pre-commit hook, or whether you must define a repository-local hook.
- The exact executable syntax and supported flags.
- Whether the command formats files in place, checks formatting without modifying files, or supports both modes.
- Which file extensions or paths it supports, and whether the hook definition already filters them.
- The Ruby and rubyfmt versions required by your project.
Keep rubyfmt distinct from rfmt, a separate Ruby formatter with different installation and command-line details.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Configure a local pre-commit hook
Once you have verified the rubyfmt interface, choose between a maintained remote hook and a local hook. A remote hook should use the repository, immutable revision, and hook ID specified by rubyfmt’s maintainers. If no maintained hook exists, a repo: local entry can call the separately installed executable, but only after confirming the command and prerequisites. Do not copy an illustrative configuration with guessed values.
For the local setup, install pre-commit using its current installation instructions, add the verified hook configuration to the repository’s .pre-commit-config.yaml, and run pre-commit install to register the Git hook. Then test the hook against a Ruby file that needs formatting and one that is already formatted. Confirm the hook’s exit status and whether it modifies files before relying on it.

Run the same checks in GitHub Actions
Use the project’s Ruby version in CI and run the repository’s configured pre-commit checks. GitHub recommends ruby/setup-ruby for Ruby workflows; a root .ruby-version can supply the selected version. GitHub also recommends pinning third-party Actions to full commit SHAs because tags and branches can move. Verify current SHAs and project requirements before committing a workflow.
- Check out the repository with a verified, SHA-pinned checkout action.
- Set up the project’s supported Ruby version with a verified, SHA-pinned
ruby/setup-rubyaction. - Install pre-commit and rubyfmt using the methods and versions confirmed by their maintainers.
- Run the configured pre-commit check and let its nonzero exit status fail the job.
Run this job on pull requests and pushes to the default branch if you want both proposed changes and direct branch updates checked. Avoid inventing a rubyfmt command in the workflow: invoke the pre-commit configuration so developers and CI use the same hook definition, file filters, and tool behavior.

Choose a CI integration
The pre-commit/action README documents an integration that checks out the repository, installs Python, and configures the pre-commit cache. The action is in maintenance-only mode and generally recommends pre-commit.ci as a faster, more feature-rich option. These are general pre-commit integration choices, not rubyfmt-specific endorsements. For either option, verify the current setup instructions and use SHA-pinned third-party Actions where applicable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose whether CI checks every file or only changed files
For the strongest baseline, run the configured hooks across all tracked files in the main CI check. This also catches formatting drift in files not touched by the current pull request. For a faster, review-specific run, pre-commit documents pre-commit run --from-ref origin/HEAD --to-ref HEAD as a way to run on changed files. Ensure the base reference is available in the checkout and correctly represents the comparison range for your workflow.

You can cache pre-commit’s repository store to reduce repeat setup work. It defaults to ~/.cache/pre-commit; PRE_COMMIT_HOME or XDG_CACHE_HOME can redirect it. Follow the pre-commit documentation’s CI cache guidance and key the cache so changes to the configured hook revisions do not reuse an incompatible setup.

Keep local and CI enforcement consistent
- Use one committed
.pre-commit-config.yamlas the source of truth for hook configuration. - Verify the rubyfmt command, supported files, and formatter/check behavior against current maintainer documentation before setting the hook’s arguments.
- Install the same rubyfmt version or compatible version range locally and in CI.
- Make CI fail when the configured check fails; do not treat a formatting failure as informational if formatting is required.
- Decide explicitly whether the required check covers all tracked files or only the pull request’s changed range.
