You can back up a Samsung phone with a broken screen only if the phone still powers on and you can unlock and operate it—or if a usable backup already exists online. First check Samsung Cloud, Google backup, and any other sync service you previously enabled. If no backup is available, choose a recovery route based on whether the screen is visible, touch works, and your exact Galaxy model supports external video output. Samsung warns that its methods may not work when the phone will not turn on or the touchscreen is unresponsive.
Choose a method based on what still works

Check for a backup that already exists
If the phone cannot be operated, begin with accounts and services you had already configured. Samsung lists Smart Switch, Samsung Cloud, OneDrive, and Google One among its backup or synchronization options. Sign in to the relevant account on your replacement device and check what can be restored. A cloud restore cannot retrieve data that was never included in a backup or sync.

Back up to a computer with Smart Switch
If the phone powers on and you can unlock it, Samsung’s computer method uses Smart Switch on a PC or Mac and a data-capable USB cable. The phone may display a prompt asking you to allow access; if the screen cannot be used to approve it, the computer backup may not proceed.

- Install and open Smart Switch on your PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone with a data-capable USB cable.
- If prompted on the phone, allow the connection or access.
- In Smart Switch on the computer, select Backup and let the process finish.

If touch fails but the display is visible, try a USB mouse
A USB mouse can provide a way to navigate the phone when the picture is visible but touch input is not working. Connect a mouse using a connection supported by your phone, then use the pointer to unlock the device and reach a backup option, such as Smart Switch. This only helps if the phone is powered on and the connection works; it does not address a dead phone or a display you cannot see.

If you cannot see the screen, check external-display compatibility
For a supported Galaxy, Samsung describes connecting the phone to an HDMI display through a USB-C-to-HDMI hub adapter with USB-A. You also need an HDMI cable, a wired USB mouse, and a wired USB keyboard. Samsung says these accessories are not included with the phone. Check your exact model’s compatibility before buying anything: not every Samsung phone supports video output.
- A compatible Galaxy model that powers on
- A USB-C-to-HDMI hub with USB-A
- An HDMI monitor or TV and an HDMI cable
- A wired USB mouse and wired USB keyboard
Samsung’s described external-display transfer procedure specifies Android 12 or later and DisplayPort support. Its instructions say to hold both volume buttons while connecting the phone to the hub. If the screen appears on the display or DeX starts, use the connected input devices to unlock the phone or exit DeX, then access a backup method. The exact behavior depends on model and setup; external display is not a way to bypass the lock.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery and device care.
- Tap Maintenance mode.
- Choose Back up your data.
- Select temporary cloud backup or external-storage backup and follow the on-screen steps.
Because the procedure starts in Settings, Maintenance Mode does not independently recover an inaccessible phone. Samsung’s guide, dated August 18, 2026, describes these backup choices in its Maintenance Mode instructions.

If the phone will not power on, or you cannot unlock or operate it after trying a compatible input or display setup, contact Samsung support or visit a service center. Samsung recommends service assistance when its documented approaches cannot be used, but its guidance does not guarantee that data can be recovered. Avoid treating a hub, mouse, or repair visit as a promise that the phone’s data will be accessible.
