Handle a model migration failure according to its cause: compare changed answers with task-specific evaluations, retry only temporary transport or capacity errors under a bounded policy, and fix quota, authentication, or request errors at their source. A single retry loop is not a migration plan: it can increase load without correcting a changed model, an exhausted account limit, or a malformed request.

First identify which kind of failure you have

Separate failures into three classes before changing prompts or retry settings. The same symptom—such as a request that does not produce a usable answer—can have different causes and require a different remedy.

  • Semantic drift: the request succeeds, but the answer, formatting, refusal behavior, or tool use differs after a model or snapshot change.
  • Transport or availability: a timeout, connection error, temporary rate limit, or overloaded service interrupts the request.
  • Admission or account: the request is rejected because of authentication, invalid parameters, exhausted credits, a spend limit, or a usage cap.

Record the HTTP status, structured error type or code and message, response headers, endpoint, model identifier, latency, retry count, and request identifiers. OpenAI’s API documentation recommends logging the server’s x-request-id for troubleshooting and describes headers for remaining request or token limits and their reset times. These details are OpenAI-specific; check the destination provider’s current documentation before relying on equivalent headers or status mappings.

When the migration succeeds but answers change

Do not assume unchanged messages will produce equivalent results on a new model family or snapshot. OpenAI’s API documentation says prompting behavior can change between snapshots and recommends pinned model versions and evaluations when consistency matters. Model outputs are also inherently variable, so a single differing answer does not by itself establish a regression.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Freeze the comparison conditions

Make the source and destination configurations explicit. Record the model identifiers, endpoint or API surface, SDK and version, prompt, tools and tool configuration, decoding settings, output schema, and test inputs. If the API supports pinned snapshots, pin the versions being compared so a moving model alias does not confound the diagnosis.

Build an evaluation set around the task

  1. Describe the task. State what a correct result must do, including required facts, constraints, and any unacceptable behavior.
  2. Choose representative inputs. Include ordinary cases and the edge cases that matter to your application; use the same inputs for both configurations.
  3. Define checks before reviewing outputs. Check task correctness, required format or schema validity, tool selection, and refusal behavior where relevant. Decide what variation is acceptable.
  4. Run both configurations and inspect failures. Repeat cases when sampling variability could obscure whether a difference is consistent.
  5. Cluster failures and iterate. OpenAI’s eval guidance describes a cycle of defining the task, running test inputs, analyzing results, and improving the prompt. Use the observed failure pattern to decide whether to adjust the prompt, output constraints, tool orchestration, application validation, or model choice.

Keep semantic checks distinct from operational checks. A model can pass the transport layer and still produce an unacceptable answer; conversely, a sound answer can be delayed or lost to a temporary service failure.

How to classify API errors before retrying

Use the response status together with the structured error code and message. OpenAI’s error-code guidance distinguishes temporary throttling and overload from account limits, authentication failures, invalid requests, and timeouts; a status code alone may not identify the remedy.

Failure What to do
Temporary rate limit (often HTTP 429) Reduce or pace request volume. Honor a valid Retry-After value as a minimum wait, and use bounded backoff if no valid delay is supplied. OpenAI documents that rate limits can relate to request or token throughput and may follow a rapid increase in request rate.
Credits, spend limit, or usage cap Check and correct the relevant account or project balance and limits. An immediate retry does not restore exhausted access.
Temporary overload (HTTP 503 in OpenAI’s guidance) Wait according to a valid Retry-After value and retry after a suitable delay. If the issue persists, check the provider’s service-status information.
Timeout or connection error Check network and client configuration, retain available request identifiers, and retry only under a bounded policy appropriate to the operation. A timeout does not establish whether the server completed the operation; the cited OpenAI guidance does not define a universal safe-replay or idempotency rule.
Authentication or malformed request Correct the credentials, permissions, or request parameters. Repeating an unchanged rejected request does not fix its cause.

Set bounded, coordinated retry behavior

For a valid Retry-After, wait at least the stated duration; a small random additional delay can reduce synchronized retries from many clients. If the header is missing or invalid, use exponential backoff with jitter. Set both an attempt limit and an overall time budget based on the operation’s latency budget, cost, and user-facing requirements rather than copying an illustrative sample configuration.

  • Retry only failures that are plausibly temporary. Do not retry account configuration problems or deterministic invalid requests.
  • Check whether the installed SDK retries automatically, including how that version handles long server-requested delays. Coordinate SDK and application retries so nested policies do not multiply requests.
  • Keep per-attempt timeouts separate from the total operation deadline, and honor cancellation.
  • For operations that can cause side effects, establish whether replay is safe and what idempotency protections the provider supports; do not assume a timed-out request failed to execute.

OpenAI’s rate-limit documentation warns that unsuccessful requests still contribute to per-minute limits, so repeatedly resending a throttled request can worsen the problem. Its advice and SDK behavior are provider- and version-specific.

Roll out the new model with checkpoints

After the comparison set passes the checks that matter to your application, introduce the destination configuration in a controlled portion of traffic. Keep a known-good pinned configuration available for diagnosis or rollback, and compare outcomes against the baseline.

Request IDs and escalation

Capture the server request ID when a response provides one. OpenAI documents x-request-id for troubleshooting and recommends logging request IDs in production. Where supported, also send a unique client request ID; it can help support investigate a timeout or network failure for which no server request ID came back. Header names and support workflows differ by provider, so confirm the destination API’s current instructions.
